Famed Confederate General Thomas “Stonewall” Jackson’s legacy is hardly easy to define. His is most remembered for cunning speed and brutality in battle and many consider him without equal. The same strategies Jackson used in the Shenandoah Valley campaign were scrutinized by both Rommel and Patton for inspiration in WWII. Jackson’s personal discipline carried over into his command. Although his men were often barefoot and near starvation, he pushed them forward into battle, not wishing to sacrifice the element of surprise. Many of his battles were actually waged on Sundays which contradicts Jackson’s steadfast devotion to Christianity that many attribute to fanaticism.
As a Virginian, however, he felt more loyal to his state than to the preservation of the Union and never hesitated when choosing a side. He demanded and received unquestioning discipline from his men; however, he did not hesitate to disregard any direct order and was never reprimanded for this dereliction—possibly because Robert E. Lee’s unwavering trust of Jackson’s genius trumped any breach in military discipline. Jackson may have indeed loved the South and honored the Confederate cause, but ultimately felt indebted only to himself and God.
His military career began when Jackson was just 18. In June of 1842, he secured an appointment to enroll at the prestigious West Point Academy. Jackson was fortunate to have this opportunity since he was not the first choice of candidate selected to enroll. The Valley Campaign of the Shenandoah Valley of 23 March to 9 June 1862 saw the rise of the Confederate Major General (MG) Thomas J. “Stonewall” Jackson. The Shenandoah Valley campaign allowed for MG Jackson to incorporate the principles of maneuver, offensive and surprise operations (US Army Center of Military History, 2012) through the use of his cavalry and foot soldiers.
When we compare the military leaders of both North and South during the Civil War, it is not hard to see what the differences are. One of the first things that stand out is the numerous number of Northern generals that led the “Army of the Potomac.” Whereas the Confederate generals, at least in the “Army of Northern Virginia” were much more stable in their position. Personalities, ambitions and emotions also played a big part in effective they were in the field, as well as their interactions with other officers.

General Lee said, to be a good soldier you must love the army, to be a good general you must be prepared to order the death of the thing you love, and therein lies the great trap of soldiering. When you attack you must hold nothing back." Thomas J. Jackson was both a good soldier and a good general. In the Mexican War he fought with all his heart for his country. When the Civil War came, he was a general. He never hesitated to send his men forward. He held nothing back. George McClellan also fought with all his heart for his country in the Mexican War. When the time came to send his men forward in the Civil War, he couldn’t do it. He loved the army to much to order its death.
The movie Gods and Generals is a portrayal of the actions that were illustrated very eloquently and captivatingly in the book Gods and Generals, written by Jeff Shaara. The movie even though was less than mediocre in its appeal was full of accurate historic facts. All of the battles, Manassas Junction, Antietam, and Chancellorsville, all occurred. The battle at Manassas shows the Federal troops clearly running from the Confederates, although it does not show the “audience” that was present that day. Chancellorsville was also an accurate representation. Also the characters were all real generals and their roles and actions in the movie were true to real life. The characters personalities are also accurate with all their religious beliefs as can be seen through the book version, which is said to be a true depiction of the characters. However, one historical inaccurate segment of the movie was the scene where ‘Stonewall’ Jackson was shot by his own men at Chancellorsville. In the movie they dramatized it to quite vast degree. The movie showed his men to shoot him unknowingly and to continue shooting at their own men, unaware of who they were. In truth they stopped after the first shots...
The Battle of Antietam on September 17th, 1862 was the single, most bloodiest day in American History, where more than 23,000 men became casualties of war. General George Brinton McClellan’s inability to use Mission Command, as a warfighting function was a key reason this battle did not end the American Civil War. An analysis of General McClellan’s Mission Command operational process will show how his personality, bias, and fear were detrimental to the outcome of the Battle of Antietam.
The following case study will be about the Battle of Antietam that took place on September 17, 1862 in Sharpsburg, Maryland along the Antietam Creek. Known as “…the bloodiest single day in American History,” by the end of the day there would be approximately twenty-three thousand casualties of which forty-five hundred to six thousand were dead. The first topic of discussion will be on the history leading up to the morning of the seventeenth in order to establish the mindset of the commanders on both sides of the creek. After the stage is set for the battle the dialogue will be guided through the three major battles of the day that encompass the Battle of Antietam. Lastly the dissertation will wrap up the Battle of Antietam and focus on the lessons learned and/or mistakes that lead to the withdrawal of the confederate forces and the bitter sweet victory of the Union that left so many Americans dead or wounded.
At the head of this revival was the memory of Stonewall Jackson, closely followed by Robert E. Lee (who would rise to the prominent position following his death in 1870). Other generals of the Confederacy who had died during the war followed, as did those who would pass on later.
Throughout history, there have been people whose names and faces have become synonymous with the time periods in which they lived. For example, Julius Caesar is synonymous with the late Roman Republic and George Washington is synonymous with the American Revolution. Just like these two men, the name Robert E. Lee has become synonymous with the American Civil War. Not only did Lee rise to become the most important and recognizable person in the Southern Confederacy, but his honor and virtuous acts during and after the war made him a hero to modern-day Americans. Even though he fought for what many consider the morally erroneous side of the war, the virtues of his character have made him a figure in American history that should be honored and remembered.
In Clarksburg, Virginia on January 21st, 1824, Thomas Jonathan Jackson was born. Later he would earn the nickname “Stonewall” and go down in history as one of the great generals of the American Civil War. Jackson graduated from West Point in 1846 and started his official military career with the US Army. He was a brevet second lieutenant in the Mexican-American War from 1846 to 1848. He displayed excellent leadership in battle, and was soon promoted to major. On February 29th, 1851, Jackson stepped down and retired from his position in the army to become an instructor at Virginia Military Institute located in Lexington, Virginia. When the war started, he joined the Confederate Army and accepted orders as a Colonel of the Virginia Militia.
When said, the name Wade Hampton III, brings to mind one of the most prolific Civil War heroes in history; Confederate history, that is. Known throughout not only South Carolina, but, the whole United State, Lt. Gen. Wade Hampton III, was in many ways what the South had always hoped to become. Unfortunately many historians overlook the latter part of Hampton’s life and focus mainly on his military accomplishments during the Civil War. When studying the life of Lt. Gen. Wade Hampton III, It is clear to see that because of his prolific military career, Hampton was made a heroine in the South, which in turn solidified his political career allowing him to take the South Carolina gubernatorial race of 1876 with much ease.

November 1888 - Miss Goldquist is my sixth grade teacher this year and she keeps talking about how well an education will serve you. Maybe so; all I know, is that I sure do like to read and that is something that Miss Goldquist likes as well.
