Fort Sumter is located in Charleston, South Carolina. The fort is in Charleston’s harbor. The fort was not even complete when war broke out. This was a big turning point for the United States of America. It separated the north from the south and in some cases it separated families. This war would impact how the United States saw slavery. It is the most deadly war that the United States has every seen in its history. It all began with the secession of South Carolina. After this an understanding was established between the authorities in Washington and the members of Congress from South Carolina. They both agreed that the forts, Fort Moultrie and Fort Sumter, would not be attacked, or seized as an act of war, until proper negotiations for their cession to the state. At the time of this Fort Sumter was in an unfinished state and did not have a garrison. (www.civilwarhome.com/CMHsumter.htm) Major Anderson thought that the people of Charleston were about t attempt to seize Fort Sumter. He would not stand for this, so since he was commander of all the defenses of the harbor, and without any orders to disagree with him, he said that he could occupy any one of his choice. Since he was being watched he only told his plan to three or four officers that he knew that he could trust. He first removed the women and children with a supply of provisions. They were sent to Fort Johnson on Dec. 26 in vessels. The firing of tree guns at Moultrie was to be the signal for them to be conveyed to Sumter. In the evening the garrison went to Sumter. The people of Charleston knew that the women and children were at Fort Johnson and thought that Anderson would take his troops there. (www.sonofthesouth.net/leefoundation/battlefort-sumter.html) On March 5, 1861 Abraham Lincoln got a message for Maj. Robert Anderson, who was at Fort Sumter, saying that there was less than a six week supply of food left. On April 8, Lincoln told Gov. Francis Pickens of South Carolina that he was going to try to refurnish the fort. The Confederate government ordered Gen. Beauregard to demand the evacuation of the fort. If it was refused he was to force its evacuation. (www.us-civilwar.com/sumter.htm) Anderson received a letter from Gen. Beauregard telling him to evacuate the fort or h... ... middle of paper ... ...p;The bombardment had lasted thirty-six hours, and over 3,000 shot and shell had been hurled at the fort. The evacuation of the fort took place the following day on April 14, 1861. The fort had been evacuate, not surrendered. Before the evacuation the citizens of Taunton Mass. had voted Maj. Anderson an elegant sword. New York gave him the freedom of the city in a gold box. Finally, on June 6, 1861, the Chamber of Commerce of New York ordered the execution of a series of medals to be presented to Maj. Anderson and to each man of the garrison. (www.sonofthesouth.net/leefoundation/battle-fort-sumter.html) This is what took place at Fort Sumter and what the men at the fort had to go through. This battle didn’t have many short term effects, but it did have one major long term effect. This battle started the civil war, which was the deadliest war that America has ever had and I hope that it is the last. Sources McPherson, James M.; The Atlas of the Civil War. South Carolina seceded from the Union on December of 1860, General Robert Anderson and his troops were stationed out at Fort Moultrie. They did not think Fort Moultrie was safe enough so then he had a plan to move his troops to Fort Sumter. The Commander of the Union was Robert Anderson, and the Confederate commander was P.G.T. Beauregard. Anderson had moved his troops from Fort Moultrie to Fort Sumter. Soon after coming to the fort Anderson realized he only had a couple week’s supply of food left. The confederate soldiers came and surrounded the fort and demanded Anderson had over the fort to them. Anderson was starting to run out of supplies for fighting and food. General Beauregard thought the Union would leave the South Carolina fort but Anderson refused. Beauregard threatened the Union to surrender but they would not, then the firing began. Anderson eventually realized there was no hope for them winning this battle, he then surrender the Southern for...
When Jackson heard of the attack on Jones’ ships on December 15 he issued crises orders to forces nearby. One General by the name of Coffee received orders from Jackson stating “You must not sleep until you reach me or arrive withink striking distance.” The next day Jackson placed New Orleans under Martial Law. When General Coffee received his orders he immediately gathered his 1250 men and where off to help Jackson. Each man brought with him a hunting knife and long rifle. The Tenessee brigade commanded by Major General William Caroll arrived on 21st December. Only one in ten of them had a firearm.
The Battle of Antietam could have been a devastating and fatal blow to the Confederate Army if Gen. McClellan acted decisively, took calculated risks, and veered away from his cautious approach to war. There are many instances leading up to the battle and during the battle in which he lacks the necessary offensive initiative to effectively cripple and ultimately win the war. This paper is intended to articulate the failure of Mission Command by GEN McClellan by pointing out how he failed to understand, visualize, describe and direct the battlefield to his benefit.
In the next pages I will explain why Fredericksburg was such a tragedy. Why it was a big morale booster for the South, but a disappointment for the North?
The American Civil War was fought between the North (The Union) and the South (The Confederates), because of the South wanting to secede from the North. Lincoln's election as president in 1860, triggered southerners' decision to secede believing Lincoln would restrict their rights to own slaves. Lincoln stated that secession was "legally void" and had no intentions of invading the Southern states, but would use force to maintain possession of federal property. Despite his pleas for the restorations of the bonds of union, the South fired upon the federal troops stationed at Fort Sumter, in Charlestown, Virginia. This was the event that decided the eventual beginning of the Civil War. Despite the advantages of Northerners, their victory in the ...
Despite Charleston’s position as a major port, at the time only two companies of federal troops guarded the harbor. Commanded by Major Robert Anderson (1805-1871), these companies were stationed at Fort Moultrie, a dilapidated fortification facing the coastline. Recognizing that Fort Moultrie was vulnerable to a land assault, Anderson elected to abandon it for the more easily defensible Fort Sumter on December 26, 1860. South Carolina militia forces would seize the city’s other forts shortly thereafter, leaving Fort Sumter as the lone federal outpost in
The terrain surrounding the Savannah region mostly consists of swamps and marshlands. Rivers flow east into the ocean, creating a variety of entrances to for coastal endeavors. The concept for Fort McAllister derived from the increasing threat of war spreading across the land. The overall coast of Georgia was considered impractical to defend, and the protection of the Atlantic and Gulf Railroad was critical for rapid mobilization and movement of forces to any threat. With Savannah being located near several water approaches, a strong defense network would be absolute in denying the Union from utilizing the sea for attack approaches. Earlier during the American Revolution the British captured the city with ease due to the lack of such emplacements (consider for foot note inst...
Fort Sumter is located in South Carolina. It was made on 1812 but was not done when Confederates attacked. Fort sumter was the first battle of the Civil war. U.S. Major Robert Anderson occupied the unfinished fort before the Confederates attacked, following South Carolina’s secession from the Union, both union and Confederates were fighting over fort Sumter. But when Abraham Lincoln announced that he was restocking the fort, Confederate General P.G.T .Beauregard bombarded Fort Sumter. Early in the morning of April 12, 1861, Confederates started shooting at Fort Sumter. At 2:30pm on April 13th, Major Robert Anderson, garrison commander, surrendered the fort and was evacuated the next day. The Union would not recapture Fort Sumter for nearly four years. No one dies in the battle of Fort Sumter but the Confederates did win. Major Robert Anderson did in fact fire the first shots of Fort Sumter and led the small force of the U.S. soldiers at Fort Sumter.
First, those involved with the battle were General Ulysses S. Grant of the Union States (US) and Lieutenant General John C. Pemberton of the Confederate States (CS). Forces engaged in the battle encompassed the Army of the Tennessee (US) and the Army of Vicksburg (CS). Grant’s army had assembled 15 miles worth of trenches and also enclosed the force of Pemberton’s of 29,000 men within the perimeter. There had been 70,000 troops of Grant. Thought were attempts in order to save and rescue Pemberton and his force, these attempts had failed both from the east and west. For both military personnel and civilians, their condition had been deteriorating rapidly.
The actual battles that took place in Fredericksburg were fought at Prospect Hill which was a devastating loss. In order for the Union to reach the Confederate army and attack, they had to cross a seven mile expanse in the open. The Confederates had hid behind a stone retaining wall that had been built around the main thoroughfare to Richmond. Before the Union soldiers started the battle they had gone through the town, ravaged it, broke windows, and stole property to try and coax the Confederates out of there place. During this battle so many draft animals were killed that the battle was nicknamed ‘Dead Horse Hill’ due to the vicious artillary battle that occurred for more than an hour. The next place the battle occurred was at Marye’s Height.
On April 14, 1861 Fort Sumter fell to Confederate warships. The 34-hour bombardment sparked The Civil War and many conflicts to come. Even though the Battle of Fort Sumter is credited for the bloodshed, numerous events led up to the undeniable fate of America. The Missouri Compromise made a convincing attempt at Congressional balance by admitting Missouri as a slave state whilst admitting Maine as a free state. Thomas Jefferson spoke saying, “considered it at once as the knell of the Union. It is hushed indeed for the moment. But this is a reprieve only, not a final sentence. A geographical line, coinciding with a marked principle, moral and political, once conceived and held up to the angry passions of men, will never be obliterated; and every new irritation will mark it deeper and deeper.” Rebellions and
In the book, The Handmaid’s Tale, Margaret Atwood writes about an alternate universe about America that illustrates our worst fears. Some of the fears depicted in the book can be seen in the world today, such as the distaste for abortion and the mentality that men are supposed to have more power than women. These issues are not only known as social issues but also feminist issues. Feminism is the belief that women and men should be treated equally socially, politically, and economically. This book shows how these issues could get worse in our society. The author uses Offred, the protagonist in the story, to show how the world could change for the worst. Offred, a handmaid in The Handmaid 's Tale, showed how men and society had control over
Fort Sumter is a war fort on an island in South Carolina not too far away from Charleston. Confederate soldiers, led by General P.G.T. Beauregard, unloaded their weapons on the Union garrison that were holding Fort Sumter after they heard President Lincoln had announced plans to resupply the fort. The entire purpose of building this fort was to guard Charleston Harbor but due to the fact the fort was not yet complete at the time of the attack, over a dozen canons, (that were a huge part of protecting the harbor), were not loaded or ready, leaving the Confederates with an upper hand. The battle lasted 33 agonizing hours. It wasn’t until around 2:30 pm on April 14, Major Robert Anderson, garrison commander, realized he had no chance at victory and he, along with 86 of his union soldiers, surrendered the fort and was evacuated the next
Feminism in the novel The Handmaid’s Tale written by Margaret Atwood is a prominent theme. This novel represents the morals and horrors of a vision of feminism, which is sometimes taken to the extremes. Women’s rights have been downgraded and as a result of this women are used to bear children and are constantly watched by the eye. The Handmaids are considered powerful figures in the novels’ society while living in a dystopia of cultural feminism, which cause them to be degraded women with a loss of identity.
For this essay, we focused strictly on critics' reactions to Margaret Atwood's The Handmaid's Tale. For the most part, we found two separate opinions about The Handmaid's Tale, concerning feminism. One opinion is that it is a feminist novel, and the opposing opinion that it is not. Feminism: A doctrine advocating social, political, and economic rights for women equal to those of men as recorded in Webster's Dictionary. This topic is prevalent in the novel The Handmaid's Tale. Margaret Atwood, a Canadian writer, spends most of her time featuring women in her books, novels, and poetry that examine their relationships in society. In the book Atwood centers her novel on a girl whom happens to be one of the handmaids. These handmaids are essentially women used for the birthing of babies. According to Atwood in one of her many interviews, "women were intrinsically good and men bad; to divide along allegiance lines--that is, women who wore high heels and makeup were instantly suspect, those in overalls were acceptable"(Problems of). These ideas were and have been created by our social and political system and could not be fixed until such systems have been reformed. The feminist ideas that are expressed in this novel are necessary. Besides, these women do exist not only in the novel but women like this exist in real life. The women are treated as property instead of human beings. The one and only purpose in their lives is to have children. The dystopic novel that she created isolated certain social trends and exaggerated them to make clear their most negative qualities. Pornography is a huge factor in The Handmaid's Tale. It is apparent in chapter twenty where Offred describes...
