How People Encounter Conflict I believe conflict is normally a negative thing for people because we don't know how to handle it correctly.. Whether the conflict be you versus another person, you versus yourself, or you versus society conflict is a testing factors that comes inevitably. However when you face conflict how do you react? Having a negative influence or having a positive influence is determined a lot on the way you deal with conflict. Conflict is a good thing if you hit it head first or leave it alone, but it can become a negative influence on you and others if you have a negative influence towards conflicts. Hitting conflict head on is a way to confront conflicts that may arise in your life. Like when Okonkwo fought the …show more content…
We remind ourselves about our failures and daily fight against ourselves. Man versus himself shows up in Okonkwo when he thinks of everything he doesn't like about his dad and his anger comes out. This has a negative effect on not only Okonkwo who has terrible anger issues, but also on his family. He chokes Nwoye when he lets his anger get the best of him destroying their relationship. This Man VS Self comes out when people commit suicide. They have to think about suicide before actually doing it. The suicidal person is having conflict with itself. This has a negative effect on not only the person who commits suicide but the people that love this person. The person loses their live that was ahead of them, and losses the chance to show everyone that they are better. The family and friend lose their loved one which it really depressing already and when you add suicide to it that's worse. Man Vs Society comes into play with all kinds of things. In Things Fall Apart the white men have to come into another society and the natives have to deal with it. This has a negative effect on the natives customs and really old fashioned natives by stripping them of their culture. It has a positive effect on the ewfele of the “nobodys” of the africans by letting them be apart of something meaning full. The one lady that had four sets of twins and she had to let them die was lead to the church and if she has twins now she can keep them instead of them
I believe you can be positive during a conflict. When being positive during a conflict, a better outcome will occur. For example, 6 million people died from a tragic event, the Holocaust. Many lives were lost, a majority were frightened, and most were hopeless.Yet, some people stayed positive during this horrible time. Three sources, in particular, Anne Frank, Dear Miss Breed, and a life story that is very heartwarming. They show how being positive is the best way to handle a conflict, however a negative conflict will get you nowhere.
An Analysis of Inner Conflict in A Separate Peace In 1942, a group of prep school boys take courses to allow them extra time to prepare for the armed forces. Gene, a conservative intellectual, befriends Finny, a free-spirited adventurer. The two form a club where they must dive from a high tree limb into the Devon River. He becomes anxious that his friend is taking time away from his studies.
As much as some of us dislike conflict, it is inherent in human nature. After all, it is like a wall that keeps us from moving forward in the path of life, but we must understand that those walls merely act as temporary challenges that are yet to be solved. Some conflicts may be insignificantly trivial, and some may be quite immense. Some conflicts may be happening within ourselves, and some may be accompanied by another person. Regardless, we must learn not to run away from conflict, but rather to run over them with a determined demeanor as the conflicts that we encounter in our lives are what helps us learn and grow as an individual. Furthermore, learning and growing from conflict is what shape individuals and what prepares us for the upcoming challenges that life will throw at us in the future.
Man versus himself, in a man verus himself conlict a person is against himself. This is an internal conflict which deals with emotions, thoughts and desires of one’s self.
While remaining himself, he has two POV’s, two ways of thinking, and two ways of doing. The reason the one contains the self consciousness is because of reasoning with himself and the world and its surroundings. Unhappiness dwells in his mind, for not pleasing himself.... ... middle of paper ...
Conflicts arise when people’s interest, values, actions, views or expectation come into contact and there is a difference of opinion and thus a disagreement (Conerly, 2004). The way people view the conflict will determine whether the resolution will negative or positive consequences.
Before understanding how to deal with conflict, one must understand what conflict is. Conflict can be defined as, “any situation in which incompatible goals, cognitions, or emotions within or between individuals or groups lead to opposition or antagonistic interaction” (Learning Team Toolkit, 2004, pp 242-243). Does the idea of conflict always have to carry a negative connotation? The growth and development of society would be a great deal slower if people never challenged each other’s ideas. The Learning Team Toolkit discusses three different views of conflict: traditiona...
The black community in the novel had to suffer oppression from white society and this seen through symbolism and internal conflict. In the 1940’s black people were discriminated against simply because of their skin color, therefore treated with no type of kindness. This oppression is still seen in today’s society with racism, not only to black people but to other people of different races too. This oppression can also be seen with discrimination against people who are different or have different views. For example homosexuality, our society doesn’t approve of those who are homosexual. In order to stop this oppression among the people around us and our community, people should start treating each other with respect and not look down on each other simply because they come from different places or have different views.
Conflict can be negative in the same tense except it is dysfunctional and hinders the teams or the person’s performance or ability to attain goals or objectives (Reaching out, 1997). Negative conflicts tend to result from the most common aspects known as relationship conflict or task conflict. Task conflict occurs when team members disagree about the tasks at hand and how they need to be performed. The other common conflict is relationship. This occurs when team members experience intrapersonal incompatibility issues. This is typically detrimental to teams as it tends to turn personal because they differ in social and communication differences and never come to a positive resolution to forego these conflicts. This is different when compared to task conflict in that task conflict can potentially be beneficial because the issue does not become personal, therefore, bringing about new ideas. Negative conflict is destructive when it leads to stress, inability to take action, and the loss of esteem or purpose (Reaching out, 1997). Conflict is viewed as negative when it results in unresolved anger within the team, personality clashes, low self confidence and problems of efficiency within the team leading to low productivity.
Look up the word conflict in the dictionary and you will see several negative responses. Descriptions such as: to come into collision or disagreement; be at variance or in opposition; clash; to contend; do battle; controversy; quarrel; antagonism or opposition between interests or principles Random House (1975). With the negative reputation associated with this word, no wonder people tend to shy away when they start to enter into the area of conflict. D. Jordan (1996) suggests that there are two types of conflict: good, which is defined as cognitive conflict (C-type conflict) and, detrimental, defined as affective conflict (A-type conflict). The C-type conflict allows for creativity, to pull together a group of people with different opinions or ideas, to combine and brain storm all thoughts to develop the best solution for the problem. The A-type conflict is the negative form when you have animosity, hostility, un-resolveable differences, and egos to deal with. The list citing negative conflicts could go on forever. We will be investigating these types of conflicts, what managers can do to recognize conflict early, and what strategies they can use to resolve conflicts once they have advanced.
Conflict is energy, conflict is excitement, conflict is often driven by a passion that is necessary to progression. In other words, we need many of the characteristics that might cause conflict and conflict itself isn’t necessarily a bad thing. The important thing is learning how to manage
Q1. Describe Okonkwo, the protagonist of Things Fall Apart. Consider him as an Igbo hero character: How does he achieve greatness and defined by his culture? How does he differ from Western heroes you are familiar with? What are Okwonko’s strengths and weaknesses?
This approach directly addresses the conflict and is often viewed as “might makes right” (Robin, 2002). A confrontational style usually involves high emotional levels, clear clarity of goals, weak relationship, and low concern for formalities or fear of punishment, moderate concerns for traditions, and a moderate self-concept.
Conflict avoidance is a technique used to deal with conflict. Avoiding conflict is mainly used to disregard the direct issue at hand. Avoiding conflict can be used to temporarily get rid of an issue or it can be used to permanently remove the issue. Avoiding conflict within the workplace most often results in relationship division. Workplace conflict is inevitable, meaning wherever and whenever there is a group working to accomplish similar goals as a whole, conflict will be present. Workplace conflict exists due to various factors. (Graham 2014) The most common seen factors influencing workplace conflict include role understanding, meaning who is responsible for what task, how tasks are to be accomplished, personality difference and poor
Conflict is unavoidable and connected to a world where different ideas and opinions are challenged. Negative conflict occurs when voices are not expressed appropriately, discussions are not in control or different parties reject moving forward with a solution. There is difficulty resolving disagreements because there are multiple reactions to disputes. However, a positive conflict supports debates without a destructive outcome. They improve communication, introduce principles that are important to others, and reduce chaos. On the other hand, the approach that a person uses to address conflict dictates the outcome they receive. Methods for resolving conflict include avoiding the problem, smoothing out a situation, competing against the ideas
