In the article “The Thematic Paradigm” exerted from his book, A Certain Tendency of the Hollywood Cinema, Robert Ray provides a description of the two types of heroes depicted in American film: the outlaw hero and the official hero. Although the outlaw hero is more risky and lonely, he cherishes liberty and sovereignty. The official hero on the other hand, generally poses the role of an average ordinary person, claiming an image of a “civilized person.” While the outlaw hero creates an image of a rough-cut person likely to commit a crime, the official hero has a legend perception. In this essay, I will reflect on Ray’s work, along with demonstrating where I observe ideologies and themes.
Every step in my life has being important to me because it will help determine the future that awaits for me at the end of my journey. Choosing a theoretical orientation is an important decision for me as a graduate student working towards becoming a licensed professional counselor. After being introduced to several theoretical orientations, it was difficult to make a final decision of which one to choose because each one had ideas that I agree with. When reading these theories I realize that many of them had views that I agree or believe by, which made it more difficult to choose one in specific. At first, person-centered by Carl Rogers captivated my attention by his view and the way he develop the theory. He believed that no one was born to be devious towards others and I agree with him (Rogers, 1961). I believe no one is born with the intent to hurt others, but certain experiences that individuals experienced throughout their lives may cause them to do harm to others. One time, I saw a picture illustrating a white baby in a bus touching the hand of a black male who was sitting down next to his mother. The mother seemed to have a disgust face while looking away avoiding eye contact with the man. The picture said, “no one is born racist,” and in that moment I thought about the importance of what children are being exposed every day and the importance of what parents teach their children about life. Negative core beliefs typically develop during times of high distress when we are less capable of looking at events objectively. Because they are distressing, we may not revisit them for reasons ranging from discomfort to fear. As a result, the initial understanding or conclusion about the event may not change or be challenged. Being aware of the core belief(s) is key to long term sustainable change as it addresses the root cause. In identifying core beliefs, we become more able to engage in a variety of skills that seek to address the source of the belief in ways that can lead to fundamental shifts in our thinking.
There are many theoretical models of counseling. Often, a diverse approach or the use of several approaches is best for the resolution of problems. I utilize several different theories and strategies in my role as a counselor. However, it is the Individual personal theory and the Family theory model that anchors my orientation to counseling as a Christian counselor.
My theoretical orientation can best be described as a mixture of Person-centered therapy and feminist therapy. Where person-centered therapy is all about being aware of oneself and feminist therapy encourages personal empowerment. Those two together create a great theme of evolving to become something greater in life. I believe that human behavior is a result of feeling like you, have a sense of belonging in the world. Similar to what Maslow’s hierarchy, people need to feel a sense of love in order to be happy and confident in one’s self. An example of how I use my theoretical orientation can be seen in my work with a middle-aged, Hispanic woman in a community mental health setting. At the time of treatment, she experienced severe PTSD symptoms and major depression due to the sexual abuse she suffered from authority figures throughout her childhood and adult life. Through the validation of her experience and psychoeducation about her symptoms, we built enough rapport to use behavioral interventions, including mindfulness and grounding to stabilize and build emotional regulation skills. The five major theoretical perspectives in psychology are biological, learning, cognitive, psychodynamic, and sociocultural perspectives. Each one of these perspectives searches for answers about behavior through different techniques and through looking for answers to different kinds of questions. Due to the different approaches, each perspective form their own assumptions and explanations. Some perspectives are widely accepted while others struggle for acceptance.
Health psychology is a relatively new concept rapidly growing and could be defined as the biological and psychological influences affect ones behaviour also bringing in social influences of health and illness (MacDonald, 2013). Biological determinants consider genetic and biological factors of an illness whereas psychological determinants focus on the psychological factors such as why people behave the way they do when dealing with issues such as anxiety and stress. Models such as the Health Belief Model and Locus of Control were developed in attempt to try and explain psychological issues around a chronic illness such as breast cancer (Ogden, 2012). Sociological factors can cause an enormous amount of pressure for one to behave in a certain way for example gender roles in society and religious considerations when dealing with health beliefs. Health Beliefs can be defined as one’s own perception to their own personal health and illness and health behaviours (Ogden, 2012). There are also theories and models used to explain pain and coping with diagnosis such as Moos and Schaefer (1984) Crisis theory and Shontz (1975) cycle of grief people go through when being diagnosed with a serious illness.
Hence, behavioral theory main focus is the behavior of the individual. The theory focuses on the positive and negative reinforcement. While, cognitive theory focuses more on the reasoning and consequences, while seeking to change the way one thinks about the actions. Behavioral theory seeks to change the way you act in the situation which will change the situation altogether. The consequences in cognitive therapy are reinforcements in behavioral theory. In the paper, “The role of facial orientation in newborn infants’ preference for attractive faces,” by Slater, Quinn, Hayes, and Brown, they did a study to test the inversion and attractiveness effect on infants. In this study they discover that infants may in fact actually prefer attractive faces because it is similar to those faces they have seen since birth. As for the “inversion effect” they have documented that infants around three months of age are sensitive to facial orientation. It is these theories that leaves them to believe that infants will show a preference towards upright attracted faces but not inverted attracted ones. (Slater, Quinn, Hayes, & Brown, 2000)
For this week's discussion the theory that resonated with me the most is the Cognitive Behavioral Theory with Dr. Krumboltz. I have always been drawn to the CBT, as I feel that an individual's negative or destructive behaviors can be changed for the better with the right intervention, client understanding, acceptance and awareness of their role in their behavior. Dr. Krumboltz terms this as a learning approach (01:35). A significant part of CBT work involves challenging distorted thinking; patterns of thinking that can lead a person to unreasonable and usually negative conclusions about events, themselves and other people. I've written a good deal about negative thinking and how to use Socratic methods and evidence to challenge distortions that typically lead to unreasonable distress and maladaptive behaviors.
To understand or create a theory, one must first have scientific support. The best way to comprise such support is research. Counseling theories give an extensive basis of data from research which has relevant correlation to active psychotherapists and counseling practitioners.
