Theodore Roosevelt, also commonly known as Teddy Roosevelt, was born on October 27th, 1858 in New York City. Theodore grew up as a very sickly child and suffered from poor eyesight and asthma. He described himself as “a sickly boy afflicted by asthma as well as poor eyesight” in his autobiography. Despite his health issues, Roosevelt devotedly participated in sports such as football and boxing. Growing up, Roosevelt's father played a major asset in his life. His successful father had very high expectations of him. When he was eighteen he decided to attend Harvard College, where he developed a passion for politics and decided to pursue it. The “big stick diplomacy” was used to refer to the foreign policy. The point of this act was to avoid war and protect the nation’s political and economical system. Furthermore, “the ultimate aim of big stick diplomacy was to advance the U.S economic aims aboard” (Big Stick). Roosevelt summed up the foreign policy with the phrase “speak softly and carry a big stick.” With this diplomacy he engaged a transaction with the military force if needed. (“Progressive” Encyclopedia) The act was a very wise plan in order to stay out of conflict and help make the U.S more powerful. Roosevelt believed that nations, like individuals, should pursue and maintain peace and order. The most effective big stick was was used in the 1900’s for the “Great White Fleet.” This was because of “the Great White Fleet signaled Roosevelt's to back up his demands with a military force” (Big Stick). The gesture helped Roosevelt tremendously because it went for everything he wanted. Roosevelt did very well in keeping the peace between the different countries, which earned him many admirers and the coveted Nobel Peace Prize. Throughout history, United-States citizens have elected several presidents, and each one of them are worth knowing for an event or an act in particular. There is an infinite amount of lessons that can be learned from other people’s mistakes, victories, and defeats. Theodore Roosevelt stepped into head of office on September 19, 1901 when President William McKinley was assassinated. He was the youngest man to become president. His motto was “speak softly but carry a big stick.” President Roosevelt would come into power offering America the square deal. He would take the power away from the industrialists as he controlled big business from the White House. He would soon become known as a TrustBuster. Roosevelt used American power for American interests and was quoted as saying, “I am an American first and last. “ Although some historians argue that Roosevelt acted like a six-year-old throughout his presidency and that he didn’t think things through, ie “he thought with his hips”, one can admire the tremendous leadership qualities that Teddy Roosevelt had. First, he was a very bold man who graduated magna cum laude from Harvard. The average citizen was aware of what a “positive, warm and tough, authoritative and funny” president that they had leading them. His leadership qualities stemmed from his time as a New York state Assembly man, a deputy sheriff, a ...

Within the period of 1900-1920, many national reforms were rising to the top as Progressive Era reformers and the federal government heard the voices of the people. The effectiveness of Progressivism is a controversial subject for some, but the future was changed through the events of any actions a president made, the rights of people, and unfair treatment and conditions. This era brings changes to our society that also changes the future of it. These two decades brought forth successful times in bettering America.

His outlook on a better, improved United States caught the attention of the whole country. Roosevelt was not only a good leader as a president but also within every leadership position he held. Prior to his presidency, Roosevelt served as a New York legislature, commissioner of police for New York, assistant secretary of the Navy at the beginning of the Spanish-American War, second in command of the Rough Riders in Cuba, and the governor of New York. He was a man of many accomplishments but clearly also knew how to be an outstanding leader. While he was a commissioner of police he restored the department, made promotions based on merit, and worked his fellow policemen to serve the people as they should.
