Daniel Oduntan Linda Graham HIST 1302 30 October 2017 Theodore Roosevelt Theodore Roosevelt was born on October 27, 1858 in New York City, New York in the United States. Theodore was the second child of four children in a wealthy, upper-class family. Theodore’s father was a businessman and philanthropist. Theodore’s mother was also born from an affluent family. Starting at a very early age, Theodore suffered from a heavy case of asthma and had horrible eyesight throughout his whole life. He did a lot of physical activity and developed a very strong physique. Despite physical barriers, Theodore had a very strong outlook on life and was very strong physically and mentally. Theodore was also very intelligent and he attended Harvard College and Columbia Law School. Three years later in 1884, both Theodore’s mom and his first wife (Alice Hathaway Lee) died on the same day. Theodore was so depressed about his loved one’s death that he decided to leave politics and spend two years on a cattle ranch. Five years later, Roosevelt became active in politics again and fought against corruption by becoming a member of the U.S. Civil Service Commission through 1889-1895. After 1895, Theodore got appointed as the assistant secretary of the navy by William McKinley. Theodore demanded a bigger navy because he was getting nervous about a war with Spain. War with Spain was declared in 1898, and Theodore consequently made the Rough Riders. The Rough Riders was tough and was he first volunteer Calvary. They were sent to fight in Cuba. Roosevelt was very bold and became an extremely popular figure. The Rough Riders charge up Kettle Hill made Theodore the biggest national hero in the Spanish-American War. When he returned, he was a representative to the Republican convention in Chicago, and this is where he started his amazing friendship with Henry Cabot Lodge that would end up lasting the rest of Roosevelt’s life. Two years after his first wife’s death, Roosevelt got married again to a woman named Edith Carow in 1886. Before Roosevelt became President of the United States, he held several political positions, including the assistant secretary under John Long, the president of New York City’s Board of Police Commissioners, Vice President, but one of his most important positions was the command of the Rough Riders, Teddy’s regiment in the Spanish-American war. While in command of the Rough Riders, Roosevelt became an American hero after a victory against the enemy that no one that was there expected him to survive. Theodore Roosevelt is admirably remembered for his energetic persona, his range of interests and achievements, his leadership of the Progressive Movement, his model of masculinity and his “cowboy” image (). He was a leader of the Republican Party and founder of the short-lived Progressive Party of 1912 (). Before becoming President, he held offices at the municipal, state, and federal level of government (). Roosevelt’s achievements as a naturalist, explorer, hunter, author, and soldier are as much a part of his fame as any office he held as a politician. His legacy lives on as one of greatest leaders in American history.
Theodore was upright, conservative, and a model of self-control. He didn't care for public acclaim. Theodore Roosevelt is one of the elected presidents, and he is worth knowing because he helped establish the Children's Aid Society, he facilitated the construction of the Panama Canal and he averted a national emergency by dealing with the 1902 coal strike. Roosevelts Rough Riders, New Nationalism, and Progressive Party structured American nationalism of the twentieth century. Evidence that reinforces his thesis is Roosevelts Rough Rider Cavalry. The mission of this regiment was to put American men into “racial and savage warfare that the earlier generations had experienced in their struggles against the Indians” (p.16). Made famous by Theodore Roosevelt’s volunteer Rough Rider’s and the Buffalo Soldiers, the Battle of San Juan Hill (July 1, 1898), also known as The Battle of San Juan Heights, was the bloodiest battle of the Spanish American War. After landing on the beachhead, the US V Corps under the command of Major General William Shafter fought their way west toward the port town of Santiago. After an indecisive clash at Las Guasimas on June 24, Shafter readied his men to take the strategic heights around the city, while Cuban insurgents blocked any Spanish reinforcements arriving on the roads to the north, in what would be one of the most decisive battles of America’s “Splendid Little War.” 1

In 1882 Roosevelt published his book on the war of 1812 and became very famed for it. Roosevelt was put forth from 1882-84 as the republicans party for the district's house seat in Albany. He began making a mark immediately and mostly worked at bring down corrupt businesses. Roosevelt blocked a corrupt effort by a financier to lower his taxes and also exposed a judge and almost got the judge impeached. Pretty soon roosevelt attained a high and positive political statues in many new york publications. For w while theodore became a rancher in north dakota and learned to ride western style, rope and hunt. He earned the respect of the locals, but there weren't entirely impressed. He had 2 ranches and after a while he became deputy sheriff and tracked down criminals and one time he hunted down a gang and imprisoned them and stayed up for 48 hours without sleep while he guarded them before trial and didn't hang them. At one point during his adventures when he was tracking down horse thieves he ran into seth bullock a famous deadwood sheriff and they became good friends. Theodore Roosevelt JR. was a very sick boy, he suffered from asthmatic attacks which caused the frightening sensation of drowning (Grondahl 2015 7-8). These sensations and attacks caused Theodore a lot of obstacles in his childhood. This group of soldiers, led by Theodore Roosevelt, was one of the most memorable army units in United States history. Consisting of sheriffs, outlaws, students, and Native Americans this unit was definitely a miss-match of people, yet what they had accomplished brought them fame in America. Fighting in battles like that of Las Guasimas and San Juan Hill had been key points throughout the campaign in Cuba against Spain, and grew the notoriety of the Rough Riders. This reputation would eventually lead the Rough Riders into the history books and Theodore Roosevelt into the White House.
Teddy acted by using both sides to come together; they reached a settlement that helped laborers, more than managers. He ended the coal strike in the United States, and made the first major steps to reforming workers conditions; he called his reforms the square deal. Teddy was the driving force behind the Spanish American War. He wanted America to civilize the rest of the world. He solidified America’s place as a world leader.
The 26th president, Theodore Roosevelt, took office in September 1901 after the assassination of President William McKinley. When he became president he expanded America’s influence into the Pacific as well as Latin American Countries, such as Panama and Puerto Rico (History.com Staff, 2009c). He had sent troops into several Caribbean countries where he established new government in several without congressional approval (King 2013). On November 9, 1901 he established a naval base in the Philippines.

... The “Rough Riders” as the unit was called, was comprised of ragtag cowboys, frontiersmen, and Ivy League scholars. Theodore Roosevelt’s unit would later become renowned for their pivotal victories and their unique image as an American fighting force. Having been a very successful leader within the Department of War serving as the Assistant Secretary and Secretary of the Navy as well as a lieutenant colonel of the first volunteer cavalry of the U.S. Army, Theodore Roosevelt retreated back to government where he served as the republican candidate for the Governor of New York. He was elected as the 33rd governor of the state of New York, where he operated at state level, implementing statewide reform.
