Blackberry picking by Seamus Heaney is about time, gluttony, limitations of life, and to some extent, the struggles of life. Heaney writes retrospectively about his life, with hindsight, about how he as a child, would go blackberry picking during a particular time of year. Throughout the poem and particularly in the first stanza, Heaney uses a wide range of literary devices such as intense imagery or sensory imagery, exceptionally meaningful metaphors and alliteration. Alliteration is used quite often in the poem. Throughout the whole poem, there is a frequent repetition of “b” words, such as “big dark blobs burned”. In the readers mind, this creates a more powerful image of the berries, and gives a strong impression of their shape and colour. There is quite a bit of imagery used in the first stanza, language that appeals to a sense or any combination of the sense. “Its flesh sweet like a thickened wine”, a glossy purple clot”. Apparently, thickened wine is tasty, so it appeals to the taste and so does the sweetness of the thickened wine. He also describes the blackberries as “Leave stains upon the tongue”. Throughout the whole poem, there is a constant repetition of the word blood or a metaphor or simile referring to blood. There is also reference to flesh on several occasions to make the berries sound desirable. Blood indicates the juice of the berries and flesh indicates what is within. An example of a metaphor is when Heaney describes the berries as a “glossy purple clot”. This smart use of an imagery and a metaphor at the same time gives an image of a ripe berry. There is also a smart use of a simile, “hard as a knot”, for the unripe berries. When Heaney says “hard as a knot”, it sounds rather short, sugge... ... middle of paper ... ...mongst children, he had a hope in himself that this time it would be different, that this time the berries would not rot, an optimism of a naïve and inexperienced child. The final part of the poem, yet perhaps the most appealing which sums up what happens each year, is how he would always have faith inside himself the next year that they would not rot. There is a rhyme of the last word of the second last stanza,”rot”, and “not”. This is the only part of the poem that rhymes, and it is rather smart to end the poem on a rhyming note. In conclusion, Black-berry picking by Seamus Heaney is a fine piece of poetry set alive by metaphors, similes, alliteration, imagery and other literary devices. Heaney’s poem seems to be violent and brutal, and has a lesson to be learnt behind the poem, a message deep but not linked with childhood, linked to the struggles of life.
In Galway Kinnell’s poem, “Blackberry Eating,” assonance, alliteration, and refrain are used in reinforcing the poem’s meaning that just like the speaker’s interest for “ripest” blackberries as described throughout the poem, words are also rich and intense, thus one is eating straight from the tree of knowledge.

The use of phrases like ‘notice how the oldest girl…’ gives a feeling that the narrator is pointing out to the responder the family members, as if the narrator and the responder are both present at the scene when the family’s moving at the time. The blackberries were used as an indicator of time, showing us how long the family has stayed in this place for, and the changes of the blackberries from when they had first arrived to when they were leaving also used as a symbol to create mood of sadness and the lost of hope. We know from several lines of the poem that the family only stayed at the house that they’ll soon be leaving for a very short while. From the lines: ‘and she’ll go out to the vegetable patch and pick up all the green tomatoes from the vines,’ – The green tomatoes tell us that the tomato plant has not been planted long, not long enough to produce ripe fruits by the time they’re going to leave. ‘
The poem opens upon comparisons, with lines 3 through 8 reading, “Ripe apples were caught like red fish in the nets/ of their branches. Alliteration is a key aspect to how the reader experiences the poem; it especially gives interest toward alliteration of the letter T. This alliteration begins in the very first line “Tell all the Truth but tell it slant-” (1.1). The alliteration on the T is used three times within the first line; however, it does not stop there. Dickinson uses the “T” sound to continually draw back to the theme of truth. Dickinson, through the use of two stanzas, four lines each, uses quite a distinct rhyme scheme to organize her poem. The second and fourth lines of each stanza are clearly examples of end rhyme, by using words such as “lies” (1.2) and “surprise” (1.4). However, every single line is not an example of end rhyme. The first and third lines rhyme words such as “slant” (1.1) and “delight” (1.3); which can be described as near rhymes for they give a small sensation of rhyming. This rhyming pattern continues for the second stanza as well. The sequence of rhyming is not arbitrarily put into practice, rather, it also adds on to the truth theme. Not only the words, but the figures of speech and other such elements are important to analyzing the poem. Alliteration is seen throughout the entire poem, as in lines one through four, and seven through eight. The alliteration in one through four (whisky, waltzing, was) flows nicely, contrasting to the negativity of the first stanza, while seven through eight (countenance, could) sound unpleasing to the ear, emphasizing the mother’s disapproval. The imagery of the father beating time on the child’s head with his palm sounds harmful, as well as the image of the father’s bruised hands holding the child’s wrists. It portrays the dad as having an ultimate power over the child, instead of holding his hands, he grabs his wrists.
Alliteration adds to the pleasing rhythmic flow of the speech and helps to enhance the poetic imagery (Silverbush and Plotkin 54). Alliteration is combined with assonance to further heighten poetic effect in the line "With eager feeding food doth choke the feeder" (37). Another excellent example of alliteration is found in the line "This precious stone set in the silver sea" (46).
Alliteration can be found throughout the poem. “I love to go out in late September among the fat, overripe, icy, black blackberries to eat blackberries for breakfast.” “...and as I stand among them lifting the stalks to my mouth...” “...many-lettered, one-syllabled lumps, which I squeeze, squinch open...” In these sentences, various consonant sounds are repeated (bl, st, sq). What is noticeable about this alliteration is that when you pronounce the words, your tongue has to shift a lot to make the beginning consonant sounds. Herein lies the comparison between words and blackberries. Blackberries roll around your mouth much like words do, forcing your tongue to pucker with their delightful yet sour tinge of taste. The writer is showing that blackberries are more similar to words than you think.
Heaney grew up at a time in Irish history when there was controversy as to whether young men should work in rising industry, gain their education, serve in the military or stay with their familiar family farm. Heaney very obviously chose to gain an education as he won a scholarship to attend a Catholic boarding school when he was twelve years old; he then went on to go to college where he embraced knowledge (Seamus Heaney - Biographical). In “Digging,” Heaney uses images he gained as he viewed his father and grandfather to portray qualities applied in work which he plans to carry from older generations of work to apply in his own work as a writer. For example, he uses symbols such as a spade both his father and grandfather used that interconnects with his pen of power, or the pen he uses to write poems, to emphasize the strength, or the spade, his knowledge provides in his poetry as it opens to the public. Heaney has written explicitly in his poem, “Digging,” to illustrate his purpose of reassuring himself that he is measuring up to his proud heritage as he publishes his first book of poetry to the public view with his pen of power through imagery of digging.
“Digging” by Seamus Heaney is the first poem in the first full volume of Heaney’s poems, “Death of a Naturalist”. “Death of a Naturalist” is about the transition into adulthood and the loss of innocence. The speaker starts his argument by first mentioning that the woman has denied the speaker something. However, it is initially unclear what was denied, all that is known is that by taking note of “…this flea, and mark in this,/How little that which [she] deniest [him] is…”, thus paralleling how the flea, just like whatever she denies him, is inconsequential (Donne lines 1-2). This idea of insignificant things meaning much more in the grand scheme of things becomes an underlying thread, which is sewn throughout the poem. The speaker then notes how “…in this flea [their] two bloods mingled be…”, alluding to an erotic mingling of their blood (Donne line 4).
