The company I chose for the project is the Disney Corporation. I chose the Walt Disney Company because it is one of the largest companies I know and one of the most successful companies of the world. People come all the way to America from Asia, Europe, and everywhere else just to visit Disney.
The beginning of what is now a national company was in 1923 when brothers Roy and Walt Disney (at the ages of 30 and 22) opened the Disney Brothers Studio in a windowless office. They began with a couple thousand dollars (which was mostly borrowed), a second-hand camera, and not much else. Their goal was modest: to make animated films.
Almost as soon as the office became their studio Walt and Roy began bringing about their first series of films denominated: Alice’s Wonderland. Even though the brothers didn’t make much money the first year, they stayed confident, and Walt told his father, with his typical optimism, that he would “ make the name Disney famous around the world”. At first Walt produced much of the company’s animation, but he soon realized that there were other artists more talented than he. So he turned to directing the animators the studio hired. As Walt focused on the creative side of the company, Roy dealt with all the financial elements; trying to keep Walt - who hardly worried about money - to a budget. In 1940 two animated films brought in less money than they cost to make. Refusing to lay off any of some 1,000 employees, the small business that had been renamed Walt Disney Productions, became a public corporation selling it’s stock to the public. ...ntinue to grow and flourish. People coming here from out of state, people coming here from out of country, and the growth of the economy all contribute to making Disney so profitable. One of the other major factors that could help to make Disney even bigger or send it spiraling downward from it’s pedestal in the clouds is being able to keep up with technology.
In conclusion, Disney has worked excruciatingly to get to where it is today. I think that Disney will continue to grow. But what happens to Disney all depends on the economy and technological advances in the world.

It would be very hard to not have heard about Disney because he has released so many different kinds of animations, but during the 1950’s Disney began to become less involved in the animation department, entrusting most of its operations to his main animators, the Nine Old Men, although he was always at story meetings. Instead, he started concentrating on other things. The company know its various revenue generating streams very well. The Disney also sees immense possibility in the sequels of the character based movies. The success of Avengers is a recent example and therefore the company plans a sequel for Captain America 2, Iron Man 3 etc. This will boasts the overall revenue generated by the company. The company is now betting heavily on the introduction of theme parks across the globe especially in emerging markets like China, India, Brazil and Russia (BRIC nations). The growth rate of 10% in theme parks and successful implementation of theme parks in Hong Kong, Japan and France allows the company to develop and construct the Disneyland theme park in Shanghai, China. The presence of 330 million consumers around the Shanghai is yet another key factor that made the Disney to invest approximately $5.5 billion in this park. Disney’s long-run success is mainly due to creating value through diversification. Their corporate strategies (primarily under CEO Eisner) include three dimensions: horizontal and geographic expansion as well as vertical integration. Disney is a prime example of how to achieve long-run success through the choices of business, the choice of how many activities to undertake, the choice of how many businesses to be in, the choice of how to manage a portfolio of businesses and the choice of how to create synergies between those businesses (3, p.191-221). All these choices and decisions are made through Disney’s corporate strategies and enabled them to reach long-term success. One will discuss Disney’s long-run success through a general approach. Eisner’s turnaround of the company and his specific implications/strategies will be examined in detail in part II. Disney could reach long-run success mainly through the creation of value due to diversification and the management and fostering of creativity, brand image and synergies between businesses (1, p.11-14).
In reviewing the vast corporation of the Walt Disney Company and all that it has to offer, one profound statement made by Walt Disney himself comes to the forefront, “I only hope that we don’t lose sight of one thing – that it was all started by a mouse” (Walt, n.d.). This statement suggests that the company has a strong focus to continually guide them in the way of the original idea of the company. Even as it watches the changes taking place in society and adapts to the new technologies and innovations, the Walt Disney Company has been able to implement diverse strategies for its growth and prosperity.
The company that I choose to explore is The Walt Disney Company. Walt Disney started the Disney Brothers studio in 1926, after years of working as a cartoonist. I selected this company due to the fact I am a fan of their products and services. Disney produced some of my favorite films like Aladdin, Hook and The Lion King. After I visited their website, I discovered that Disney owns multiple media outlets, in such areas as film, Internet, music, broadcasting, publishing and recreation. According to Disney’s “The mission of The Walt Disney Company is to be the one of the world’s leading producers and providers of entertainment and information. Using our portfolio of brands to differentiate our content, service and consumer products, we seek to develop the most creative, innovative and profitable entertainment experiences and related products in the world”. The Disney brand is doing exactly what their mission states.
I believe that Disney will expand in a more strategically way, having gained the experience with the opening of Euro Disney and Hong Kong. Their Corporation will expand taking into account all of their previous mistakes in the past. They also have to take in the importance of advertisement, such as the opening of new and improved rides. They also have to have a well-developed strategy to open its new parks with out the outrageous losses they suffered in the opening of EuroDisney.
One of the key factors of the successful diversification is the very strong branding of the name Disney. That the name was famous after the success in the early years made it among other things possible to go into the theme park industry. Evaluated isolated, the theme parks was a success. But when also accounting for the synergies created, the decision to go into this industry was a huge success. It has created a spiral of synergies, where the characters in the movies get more popular due to the parks, as well as the fact that when people are visiting the parks they get stimulated to buy the merchandise. This is just one example of the synergies that exist in Disney. When Michael Eisner took over control in Disney, he kept focusing on same corporate values as earlier, which are quality, creativity, entrepreneurialism and teamwork. These values have been preserved despite of the size of Disney, and are an important factor in sustaining and building the Disney brand.
The Walt Disney Company is known throughout the world as a leader in entertainment. The strategies that the Walt Disney Company have used include competitive advantage, a growth strategy, and a renewal strategy. When a person mentions a theme park, Disney is the first park that comes to mind. They were not the first theme park, but they have mastered the art of creating memories for adults and children alike. As a former employee of Disney I can vouch for the amount of effort that goes into creating memories for families. Disney is a leader when it comes to the theme park business, and other parks look at Disney as a leader. An example of this is that other parks will not raise admission prices, until Disney first raises their prices. WESH.com said "It remains to be seen if Disney's move will trigger a round of similar increases at other Orlando theme parks. Historically, when Disney raises its prices, the other parks follow" (2011, p.1). There is not a company in the world that can provide the "magic" that the Walt Disney World company can provide (Disney.com, 2011).
The Walt Disney Company is the largest entertainment company in the world in terms of revenue. It was founded on October 16, 1923 by Walt Disney and his brother, Roy O. Disney. They started the company, The Disney Brothers Cartoon Studio, where they became the leader in the American animation industry and later working in live action film production, television and their world famous theme parks. Through different acquisitions, they have diversified and now do business in theater, radio, publishing, online media, music and own several television channels (Disney History Institute).

The animation scene is dominated by few large companies, and Hollywood. Disney, for example is one of the biggest conglomerates in the world, with a revenue of $42 billion (2012). Given its long history since its inception by Walt Disney in 1923, Disney has become one of the most influential players in the entertainment industry. Some movies are famous across generations. Thus, it is hardly surprising that Disney is one of the company that influences children the most, with its innovative animation and imaginary worlds and diverse characters.
