Recommended: Representation of women in othello

The term of address 'valiant Moor' is used by the senator and conveys the idea that Othello is the protector and saviour of Venice. Othello is a black man of a very high status and can be see as valuable and indispensible to the state, as he is needed to fight in the war.

The fronted conjunction 'But' shows that Othello unfortunately, has a fatal flaw of being very open with those he thinks he can trust on face value alone/ Othello's devotion and love to Desdemona in Act 1 could lead him to becoming jealous very easily of his wife. Historically, Venetian women were considered loose and so it is easier for Iago to sow the seeds of doubt in Othello's mind. In addition to Othello's flaws, he has complete trust in Desdemona this can be seen with the use of the emotive possessive pronoun 'My' where Othello see's Desdemona as his possession now they are married and has faith in her even though he has been warned by Brabantio that Desdemona is a deceiver so she could just as well do the same towards Othello 'She has deceived her farther and may thee'.     The fact that Othello is wavering between believing Iago and trusting his wife is reflected in the imagery Shakespeare uses in the soliloquy. The first image that is used is that of a falcon. Lines 301-304 read: “If I do prove her haggard, / Though that her jesses were my dear heartstrings, / I’d whistle her off and let her down the wind to prey at fortune.” This shows that Othello is still unsure about Desdemona, and claims that though he is in love with Desdemona, he would drop her if he found out she was cheating. This is quite a strong willed statement, but it is diminished by lines 319-320, which follow the entrance of Desdemona and Emilia into the chamber. Othello says, “If she be false, heaven mocks itself! / I’ll not believe ‘t.” This is an example of how turbulent Othello’s state of mind is. The steadfast determination expressed using the falcon image sort of “melts” when he sees Desdemona, and he immediately professes denial that she could be untrue to him. Yet, just ten lines earlier (l. 308), Othello says, “She’s gone! I am abused!” and proceeds to lament the very institution of marriage: “O cure of marriage, ? That we can call these delicate creatures ours / And not their appetites!” Shakespeare’s placing of these three different conclusions Othello has drawn in such close proximity is an example of antithesis, and a testament to the changing and chaotic state of mind of Othello.

Othello has had to work very hard as an outsider to be respected and honored and he can’t bear to lose the good name he has earned. When Othello goes to Desdemona and confronts her she denies ever being unfaithful, but Othello is too prideful to listen to the women he loves and hear her side of the story. His mind is made up before he even gives her a chance as we see in Act 5, scene 2: “Therefore confess thee feely of they sin/For to deny each article with oath/Cannot remove nor choke the strong conception/That I do groan withal. Thou art to die.” (1088). So, Othello proceeds with killing his loving wife who defended herself until her last breath. Othello then finally learns the truth about Desdemona’s innocence.
