The Use of Punishment

What conditions, if any, do you think justify the use of punishment? On the job punishment as illustrated in this case incident is a bit over the top. However, job punishment is justified in some cases. The use of punishment would be justified in cases of deviant workplace behavior (29) as well as fraud, unethical behavior, drug use, and tardiness or absenteeism. The type of punishment justified would vary depending upon the offense. In the case of an employee using drugs or drunk on the job, an appropriate punishment may be job suspension and enrollment in some type of rehabilitation program. Whereas tardiness or absenteeism may justify a punishment of time off without pay or some other punishment that management relays to the employee to be responsible for showing up on time every time as required for the position the employee holds. On the job punishment is definitely justified in some instances and it is the responsibility of good managers and executives to assure the punishment fits the infraction. Do you think most managers use punishment? Managers are in a position to shape the behavior of their employees and it does not need to be done by punishing employees. The existence of unwanted behavior may occur and managers have many choices for shaping employee behavior besides the use of punishment. I do not believe that “most” managers use punishment to motivate and change behaviors. Good managers implement the four management functions (5) leading their teams and individual employees by utilizing their technical or human skills (7). There may be an occasional incident of deviant workplace behavior (29) and this is a perfect opportunity for a manager to mentor and died their employee. I regularly came in early and stayed late to accomplish the necessary tasks as well as to “be seen” as working very hard. When my efforts and achievements went unrecognized and on notice by my boss for months on and while he continued to push for more productivity and additional task accomplishment, I began to feel a high level of drop dissatisfaction. I took notice of other employees who were unaffected by his demands and I never did figure out how they were unfazed.
