John Freyer’s ‘All My Life for Sale’ provides an excellent source of rhetoric in the use of persuasion. For example, ‘Five Dollar Iron tag#000423’ listed by John Freyer, and the description that follows it, can be compared to standard eBay listings of irons. In his example, John Freyer describes his very subjective life experience of being a poor waiter after moving to Iowa. After searching a few stores, he finally found a $5 iron at a Kmart. He proceeds to describe the complex system of exporting cheap labor to children in China, describing a process that hurts everyone except for the company. His descriptions are personal, and describe very human experiences, appealing to an audience of other humans. The descriptions have large elements of visuals, creating a story for each item from the personal perspective of John. Some visual examples are: the shoes matching his suit, the shoes not fitting, the towel being a bit ratty, the shirt being nasty, having a long history and being over-worn. Next, let’s look at some standard eBay iron listings. The ‘Easy Steam Compact Iron, IRO2V-T’ describes, in a mainly objective fashion, the various functions of the iron: comfortable handles, transparent water tank, steam technology, spray mist, anti drip, etc. Sprinkled in are also subjective descriptions, such as making the subjective assumption that the compact size is perfect for apartments, dorm rooms, and travel. The audience is simply people looking for an iron, maybe intrigued by one or more of the various qualities described.
