Advertisements are everywhere in the world today. It seems as if no one can go more than ten feet without seeing an advertisement. Seeing so many advertisements on television, on the internet, and on billboards, people never think anything of the advertisements. Besides being annoying, people just see how the company is trying to sell their product. Advertisements are just one example of a use of a unique type of language called rhetoric. Learning about rhetoric changes the view on advertisements and even the rest of the world. For example, advertisements are no longer just a billboard or a commercial; the advertisements are more complex than that. Learning about rhetoric gave me a new view on the influence advertisements or art has on me. Being a teen active on social media, I have seen many advertisements online. After learning about rhetoric, I realize how much there is online. For example, YouTube has many videos that play before the video I want to see. Not to mention the ads around the video player. With all the rhetoric around, I learned why it is important to be a critical consumer of rhetoric. Being a critical consumer can help see the true message. For example, a news broadcast might show an event of a dispute. The media may try to sneak their viewpoint in and try use techniques to influence the viewers. Being able to identify the rhetoric and having a different view on the message can help see through the media’s report. Being a critical consumer of media can also prevent traps media sets up. In magazines, there are always pictures of models that look perfect. Then in the corner there is some product to help with the skin. Knowing that the picture is not actual and was photoshopped lets me know that the results will probably not make me look as perfect. It can help, but it can not make me look perfect like the
