“According to Augustine, anyone who denies the Trinity is in danger of losing her salvation, but anyone who tries to understand the Trinity is in danger of losing her mind” (Olson & Hall, 2002, p. 1). The Trinity is an important doctrine of the Christian faith but is extremely complex and difficult to understand. McGrath describes it as, “The doctrine of the Trinity is widely regarded as one of the most difficult aspects of Christian theology” (2017, p. 299). The Trinity is essential to the Christian faith despite its complexity and diverse approaches. This paper will attempt to explain the concept of the Trinity and its importance by looking at its theological pitfalls, creeds, explanations, and effect of faith.
As many theologians attempted to explain and understand the Trinity, there became several misconceptions. The first pitfall comes from Arius in his creation of Arianism. Olson …show more content…

Hibbert points out that Christians, “try to understand the Trinity, by … asking how it is possible for the divine simplicity to be composed of three persons, or how it is possible for three persons to have one substantial and identical nature” (1963, p. 08). It is difficult to grasp because we try to apply human ideas and realism to a divine concept. Our “reason is too limited to grasp the fullness of the majesty and glory of God” (McGrath, 2017, p. 300). Fairbairn does a good job explaining the Trinity as, “one God, the Father, who has two other persons equal to him and united to him in such a way that they are one being” (2009, p. 44). He also says that they are three who have always been connected and make up a single God (Fairbairn, 2009). He is explaining the Trinity as, there is one God, with three distinct persons, and they have distinct relationships with one another.
