The Unsinkable Ship That Sank

On the day of April 12,1912, Titanic was thought to be the dream ship that could never be destroyed. Like today’s society, the passengers were enjoying the time of their lives and thought nothing could ever happen to them because everybody thinks it’s the “unsinkable” ship, or at least that’s what everyone knew it to be. White Star Line’s Titanic was called the “Ship of dreams”. As they loaded up, many passengers of different classes and sectors of society thought that, that was the ticket to their dreams. But as time pass by from enjoying too much, little do they know that the ship is sinking. Panic came through everyone’s head. That leaves me to the question, who is most to blame for the sinking of the Titanic
Most of the answer about who is to blame for the sinking of the Titanic leads to him and that is because he is responsible for running the ship as a captain. While being in charge of the Titanic, several weather warnings were issued, all seven warning that were issued that whole day, he did not slow down and dismissed them. “The captain of the Titanic was drunk when the liner hit an iceberg and sank, a newly unearthed document alleges. Captain Edward Smith was apparently seen drinking in the saloon bar of the doomed ship in the catastrophic collision” (Gayle). Ultimately, with a ship at sea, it is the captain who is responsible for everything. A board of inquiry can place some blame for contributing factors on others, but still, it is the captain who holds ultimate responsibility. The captain can not share the responsibility. The major malfunction of the Titanic was speed, they were simply going too fast for the conditions. Had they slowed, they might have been able to steer clear. Instead because of the poor visibility conditions, they had no time to take any corrective action to avoid the collision.“No general alarm was sounded, no whistle blown and no systematic warnings was given to endangered passengers, and it was fifteen or twenty minutes after the collision before Captain Smith ordered the Titanic’s wireless operator to send out a distress message” (San Francisco Chronicle). It also proves the
Not only was it the largest and most luxurious liner at the time, it was also the most ill-fated cruise ship as it sailed off on its first and last voyage. Along with its sinking, more than half of its passengers would be buried at sea.Captain Smith is definitely to be blamed for hitting the iceberg and just slightly for the loss of lives, however he is not the only one. As mentioned, there are people such as shipbuilders and Bruce Ismay, which can be blamed for their selfish behaviour, distraction, rudeness and bad priorities. Captain Smith is the captain of the ship, not only in charge of every passengers. Their lives is his responsible for not being able to do much to help except for the last minute warning that the Titanic is about to sink rather than focus on safety of the passengers. True that there are other factors to blame for the sinking of the Titanic like Bruce Ismay giving pressure to Captain Smith for the Titanic to go faster or the Shipbuilders for not creating good enough rivets that may help the Titanic to sink slower than an average ship. When people hear the name Titanic many vivid and emotional images come to mind. Visions of the very last yet frantic final moments titanic spent afloat before sinking to its watery grave miles below the surface. No one however pictures everything that had happened before and after the great liner sank, or the
