Every month I am a part of the Teen Advisory Council, a group made up of unique members. The group consists of teenage patients that have long lasting relationships with the University of Michigan Mott Children’s Hospital. What is so intriguing about this particular group of people is that this council would be nonexistent; if the advanced medical technology had not been around when we were all born. I have been involved with this council for about a year now and I did not know it even existed until I became a member. The Teen Advisory Council is a newly acquired committee that the University of Michigan doctors and nurses have been involved with for almost a year. The coordinator of this council is the Patient and Family Centered Care Program …show more content…
The goal of this webpage is to get the word out that there is such a thing as a Teen Advisory Council (TAC) and to attract teens to become a member. To become a constituent of this group; however, there are specific requisites that Kelly Parent has set up. Members of this committee have to be roughly the ages of 12 – 21 years, a recurrent patient of the University of Michigan Motts Children’s Hospital with a life-long medical condition. The current guidelines to become a member, contradict my interviewee’s perspective. She thought that members of the council have to possess a medical heart condition. The group requirement expands to welcome any patients with a variety of medical …show more content…
Each individual takes on a specific role within the group and is important to this committee. The director of this council is in charge of what day we meet each month, the activities we do, and the food we eat and contacting new presenters for each meeting. These presenters are from different departments of the Hospital to come and fill us in with new projects that would perform better with a teenager’s perspective. The teen members take their experiences they have had at the hospital and give their views on what the hospital should do to make it an even better place for teen patients. The medical student is in part an assistant to both the director and the teenagers. She makes sure that everyone signs in, arranges the food on the table and takes over if the director is unable to attend a meeting. The medical student also provides their input with the unique perspective of learning medicine at the University and volunteering in the different departments at the hospital. The interviewee stated that the roles the members play in the committee are to help patients at Mott Children’s Hospital. She is essentially correct, as a team our most vital goal is to make the hospital more teen friendly. In order to meet this goal, there are different activities we participate in and presenters we give our attention to in order to give our input as a

The California Youth Authority or the CYA as it is more commonly known, is an institution which provides a range of education, treatment, and training services for youthful offenders committed by courts. This system has been plagued by multitudes of problems for many years that need to be fixed.

There are millions of questions that are begging to be answered, and I have the drive to find the answers to them. There could be a vaccine for cancer just waiting to be found in the world, and I could be the one to find it. Paraplegics could be able to walk again, and I could be a part of their recovery. Not only would I be influencing the world, but I would also be influencing distinct human lives. My experience with volunteering in schools and crisis centers has taught me about the value of lives. I’ve come to deeply appreciate the fact that every person experiences the world as vividly as I do, meaning that they share the same feelings, from love, anger, sadness, down to pointless and sporadic thoughts and emotions. This makes me further respect the work of those who work in the medical field, as they make impacts larger than I can imagine. I know that if I were in the place of someone whose life depended on the innovations in science and technology, my existence would be highly influenced by any doctor who even simply hopes to make advancements in
American teenagers are often criticized for being irresponsible and immature. Some in the older generation will also state that kids are taking too long to move out of the house. These views of young adults are pessimistic and demeaning to the current generation. While the adolescent stage has been extended, American kids are taking an ample amount of time to accept the responsibilities of becoming an adult.
...en who are there each week are incredibly inspirational, and they never seem to be discouraged, even though some of the patients have been there for five to six weeks in a row. I look forward to seeing their smiling faces each time I visit, yet I cannot help but hope they will not be there but will be at home the next time I visit. The children and youth I have met at Children’s Hospital have become dear friends, and they have taught me that leadership involves making the most of the talents we each have been given, and seeking excellece, not perfection.
Finally, I think that adolescents should have the responsibility to make their own autonomous medical decisions, but also take time to think about decision they are making first. Adolescents are people too and if you look at a 16 year old as a mature adult then you should look at 14-15 year old as adults as well. Everyone is equal everyone should be treated equal. Also it is legal for adolescents to have their rights, if we as citizens in the United States of America didn’t have the right to privacy I don’t think that we would have our Bill of Rights.
Everyone at some point in their lives lies even when they know that they should be telling the truth. Deception is a key element in William Shakespeare’s play, Romeo and Juliet. Romeo and Juliet are both deceptive to their parents when they do not tell them about their marriage. They then continue to lie, Juliet telling her parents she would marry Paris when she secretly arranged to fake her death and Romeo deceiving Friar Laurence by going back to Verona. All of the deceiving in the play leads to conflicts, which eventually ends in death of both Romeo and Juliet. By showing how Romeo and Juliet being deceptive to their parents and role models led to pain and conflict, Shakespeare shows that you should always be honest if you want to maintain
...epersonalized. Although not every patient is easy to deal with and doctors are under colossal pressure, by inspiring students with a possible future in the medical field to get involved with type of community service early we can ameliorate the distressing situation. Coming into contact with, speaking to, and intimately understanding these incredible individuals can dramatically alter one’s perspective and ensure treatment with self respect and dignity. I strongly believe in this notion of early involvement. My changed view coupled with my future medical training in college will allow me to be a figure to emulate and hopefully inspire others to follow this path. By embarking on this monumental journey mankind has the opportunity to shape history and enrich the lives of others while personally experiencing the most rewarding of all endeavors: helping someone in need.
The names used in this Adolescent Observation Report are fictitious. This is absolutely necessary to protect the privacy of the adolescent being observed.
As a traditional Native American saying goes, “Certain things catch your eye, but pursue only those that capture the heart.” My heart was captured by pediatrics at an early age. My journey was started growing up in a small town of India with different but significant healthcare needs and limited availability of resources. During the school life, I was always attracted towards human biology. As a young student, I was very curious and used to ask many questions, and my teachers always explained every principle by scientific reasoning and rational thinking. Childhood, after all, is a time when every human begins to construct their concepts of the physical, social, mental and emotional portions of their life. In turn, these perceptions can profoundly
Some facilities are giving paid time off to volunteer with different non-profits and community programs. In addition, many nurses are facilitating various programs that raise education and awareness on a number of important issues affecting the youth and their family. these issues range from the importance of regular check ups and preventative care. In Addition, to informing youth concerning their rights when dealing with their own health. All of these factors help to create a new generation of patients who are proactive and riding the wave of patient centered care.
Critics of this issue believe that minors should not have the right to make their own medical decisions. As Kathryn Hickey states, “Adolescents may lack the moral responsibility, judgement, and experience to understand the outcome of their actions and decisions” (101). Because of the fact that minors are under the age of 18, they do not have enough experience to know the future effects of a certain treatment or other medical choice. This puts them in a lot of danger because one wrong not thought out choice from them could cause great harm to them. Minors do not have enough mental capacity to make a logical decision that puts into account future effects of the treatment they choose.

There are many health issues and concerns for teenagers. Many health issues are related to illegal substances but everyday food is just as big of a danger. Obesity is sweeping the nation and its due to all of the amount of junk food, fast food, and sweets that are promoted and sold every day. In the United States the number of teenagers that are obese is increasing rapidly. 18% of teen from ages 12 to 19 are obese. That is tripling teen obesity in 1980. 30% of kids from ages 6 to 19 years old are obese. These statistics show a huge problem and it is growing faster than ever.
