Introduction
Before we talk about the agency Diabetes UK, we’ll give an outline on
diabetes.
Diabetes is a condition in which there’s an excessive amount of
glucose(sugar) in the blood. This occurs when the body can’t use
glucose properly because of a lack of insulin or when the insulin
doesn’t work properly.
There are two types of diabetes:
Type 1(insulin-dependent)diabetes occurs when the body is unable to
produce any insulin.
Type 2(non-insulin dependent)diabetes occurs when the body produces
insulin but it doesn’t work properly or there isn’t enough.
Now on to the agency Diabetes UK.
The Diabetic Association was set up in 1934 by novelist HG Wells and
Dr RD Lawrence – both of whom had diabetes. The radical charity they
founded aimed to ensure that everyone in the UK could gain access to
insulin, whatever their financial situation.
It became known as the British Diabetic Association in 1954. RD

However, no matter how much they ate, their bodies wouldn’t be able to use the nutrients due to the lack of insulin. This would lead to a very slow and painful death. In 1922, four Canadian researchers by the names of Frederick G. Banting, Charles H. Best, John J.R. MacLeod, and James B. Collip had discovered a way to separate insulin in the pancreas of dogs and prepare it in such a way so that it can be used to treat diabetic patients. In the year 2008, there were 1,656,470 people who suffered from diabetes in Canada, and by 2010, it is predicted that this disease will take over the lives of 285 million people . Although there is no cure for diabetes, the treatment of prepared insulin is prolonging the lives of diabetics and allowing them to live freely. Lastly is injury prevention and safety, which shows about how to reduce the risk of unintentional injuries by following rules or guidelines.
Every day of my professional life as a Diabetes Nurse Educator consists of teaching patients the fundamental aspects of diabetes and various approaches to its management. One would be inclined to assert that the information I provide each person should have been already well understood and applied through initial education implemented in Primary Care office. However, Primary Care providers face the financial challenges along with time and resources limitation which leads me to believe that if fundamental teaching took place, the population would be healthier and more aware of dangerous results of poor glycemic control.
