Imagine a six year old little girl who wants to skate on a skating rink. This girl loves skating and she was excited. Her mom was upset when the employee told her that her daughter could not be on the rink because she had to be in a wheelchair. Also the mom realized that same day that they had no accessible parking spots so the mom told the city and they ended up putting 2 accessible parking spots in. Thankfully there was a law in place that could do something about this incident and they ended up getting to go skating because there were laws against discrimination. The United States is considering making new laws that would protect people with disabilities but there are pros and cons to this issue. The CRPD was established to look into this issue and advise law makers. There have been many articles written about this issue and two of them are “Should the Government Specifically Mandate Rights for the Disabled” and “A Fine Balance: Reconsidering Patient Autonomy in Light of the Un Convention on the Rights of Persons with Disabilities” by Jillian Craigie. The convention on the rights of persons with disabilities (CRPD) was not controversial in the beginning. According to the author the CRPD is “an international treaty intended to improve the treatment of people with disabilities throughout the world”. (“Should the government”, 2013). The treaty was most popular in developing countries where people with disabilities often do not have what they need. According to the author “Even in the united states, one of the global leaders in disability rights, people with disabilities suffer considerably higher rates of poverty and unemployment then people without disabilities.” (“Should the government”, 2013). Craigie and “Should the Government” both brought up opinions about how it might not work as well as people would like it too. However, at the same time, they both bring up the point that the CRPD could be beneficial. “Should the Government” focuses on the fact that the CRPD is based off the Americans with Disabilities Act and Craigie focused on helping people with mental health issues through the CRPD. People with disabilities all across the world need equality and autonomy to live their lives the way that they want to live them. Giving people with disabilities equality and autonomy will help to make their lives better like all people in the world want. Helping people with disabilities is something that needs to be addressed by all people not just the government and using the CRPD along with the Americans with Disabilities Act will do just that.
The Disability Discrimination Act of 1995 set out to end the discrimination people with disabilities encounter. The Act gave disabled people the right to employment, access to goods, facilities, and services and the right to buy and rent land and property. These rights came into force in December 1996, making treating a disabled person less favorably than an able-bodied person unlawful. On the other hand, it has not completely broken down barriers that continue to create the dynamics of oppression among such individuals. For instance, WIOA can be harmful to individuals with disabilities because there are still societal prejudices and biases associated with the stereotypical portrayal of people with disabilities and WIOA has played a role in it. For example, WIOA networks with employers to hire individual’s with disabilities and place them in conventional settings, where they work with others who have disabilities, for example, Walgreen’s and in fact, these participating organizations have also increased their pay. In my opinion, individual’s with disabilities should be able to work with individuals who are not disabled, as well. Furthermore, pay for those individuals who are still considered to be in “sheltered” work programs have not received an increase in pay. Additionally, according to my studies, in 2012, less than 30 percent of Florida’s civilians with disabilities between age 18-64 living in the community were employed. There is a greater priority focused on young people who are disabled. The Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA) is one of the most significant laws in American History. Before the ADA was passed, employers were able to deny employment to a disabled worker, simply because he or she was disabled. With no other reason other than the person's physical disability, they were turned away or released from a job. The ADA gives civil rights protections to individuals with disabilities similar to those provided to individuals on the basis of race, color, sex, national origin, age, and religion. The act guarantees equal opportunity for individuals with disabilities in public accommodations, employment, transportation, State and local government services, and telecommunications. The ADA not only opened the door for millions of Americans to get back into the workplace, it paved the road for new facilities in the workplace, new training programs, and created jobs designed for a disabled society (Frierson, 1990). This paper will discuss disabilities covered by the ADA, reasonable accommodations employers must take to accommodate individuals with disabilities, and the actions employers can take when considering applicants who have disabilities.

In September 1973, President Richard M. Nixon signed into law HR 8070, sponsored by Rep. John Brandemas (D-IN). From a legal perspective, this represented a profound and historic shift in America’s disability policy. With the passage of Section 504 of HR 8070 (named The Rehabilitation Act of 1973), which banned discrimination on the basis of disability, this marked the first time people with disabilities were viewed as a group - a minority group. Physical barriers can happen in many places from offices to health care organisation, this can affect people who may have a disability and may need to use ramps, may need wide doors or may even need lifts in certain areas for example in schools they would need to have wide doors, ramps and lifts. But this can also be a barrier if the building were built from a long time ago but it can be overcome is in school they rearrange the time table and have the lesson in a different area of the school building where the wheelchair can access.
People with intellectual disabilities have faced discrimination, alienation and stigma for a very long time. History around the world is full of horrid episodes where the intellectual disabled have faced the worst treatments. Though some positive strides have been made in respect to their the rights, even today they face a myriad of challenges and are yet to fully access and exploit opportunities in the society. It is important to note that people with intellectual disability are also human, thus they are entitled to all human rights without any discrimination. This paper looks into the issues of human rights for the intellectually disabled persons, the challenges that they face and how their human rights can be enhanced.
While these three authors have different reasons to write their essays, be it media unfairness, ignorance, or ethical disputes, they all share a basic principle: The disabled are not viewed by the public as “normal people,” and they are unfairly cast away from the public eye.
