Do you like colors? What if I asked you to make a single sharpie? Would you be able to complete that simple task without instructions? As hard as it may seem, it is actually quite simple. The process is a few simple tasks added up to a big task. Sharpie parts are first made in the molding department of a factory. These parts are then sent to the assembly department. In assembly, the logo and names are pressed onto the tubes and the pieces are put together. After assembly, they move to packaging. There, the sharpies are put in packages and shipped out as finished product. Personally, I’ve worked in all three departments; and each has their pros and cons. Molding is the easiest of them all and you get the longest breaks. Although it is the easiest, it is also the hottest and requires the most walking. Also in molding it is easy to get a red tag later in the night when the tiredness kicks in. Assembly is simple you fix broken machines and make sure ink is refilled for the sharpie logos on the sharpies. The process begins when raw plastic is brought to the plant. This raw plastic is running through certain machines depending on the part ordered. The machine takes raw plastic and molds the plastic into the ordered part. Dye is then added if needed to change the color. One person can run up to 13 machines at a time depending on what machines are running. Every two hours quality checks are put in place. To do a quality check an employee takes a shot of product and searches for defective parts. If a defective part is found the machine gets shut down and maintenance fixes the problem. If a defective product is missed on a quality check a red tag is given. If an employee is given a red tag they must attend a red tag meeting.
