Some people might believe that social media can be addictive and it can but there are reasons why social media is valuable for the world to have.
Social media can help families that has members overseas that are deployed, those who lives in distant countries, and those who are in Mr. Rogers words “helpers”. There was someone who had hearing lost that lost her job and had to use the money that she was saving to get a hearing aid. She was so frustrated she went online to talk about it. A kind person reading about her frustrations bought the poor woman the hearing aid that she needed. Social media helped them to communicate to this day because if it wasn’t for that she wouldn’t have gotten her hearing aid and wouldn’t of meet the nice person at all (Hootsuite, 2013). Media can also help military personal to communicate to their loved ones easier when they don’t have access to a phone. When my dad was deployed, we used Skype to talk to each other. you can go on their sites so you can get the news that you could’ve missed. There are times that my mom couldn’t see the news in the morning so she went online to find it and then she set alerts for in our location she would be notified almost immediately. Statistics say that social networking sites are the top news source for about 27.8%, newspapers are at 28.8%, radio is at 18.8%, and other print publications at 6% (ProCon.org, 2016). The downside is that people can use social media to spread false information. 49.1% of people have heard false news on social media (ProCon.org, 2016). “In a suburb in Mexico City rumors were spread on Twitter and Facebook about fires, shootouts, and caravans of gunmen cause a widespread panic causing the local police department to be flooded with over 3,000 phone calls. Which temporarily closed schools in the area (ProCon.org, 2016). You could probably say what’s happening in your area and forget saying what state you’re in and you could create panic in that
In the last 50 years the internet’s influence has grown exponentially with the advance of technology. In communications revolutions, first there was the telegraph, then the radio, the newspaper, magazines, television and now the internet. We live in a society that depends on information and communication to keep moving in the right direction and do our daily activities like work, health care, education, personal relationships, and anything else that we have to do. What we need to be aware is that most of our decisions, beliefs and values are based on what we know for a fact; our assumptions and our own experience. In our work we usually know what we have to do based on our experience and studies, however in our daily lives we rely on the media to get the current news and facts about what is important and what we should be aware of. What effect does the social media have on people? Is the social media bringing convenience to people? Nowadays, social media and technology have become a necessary part of almost any field. There are not many activities that are not affected by it. It affects health, education, communication and so on. All they show us that importance and threats of social media, we need to treat it properly. (maybe end the thesis with this instead - “Despite the positive effects of internet technology however, there are dangers if we don’t use it properly and productively.”)
From the perspective of adolescents and teenagers growing up in such a hyper-connected world, having a smartphone just seems like a necessity, something that all parents feel obliged to giving to their child at a young age, should they have to contact them in case of emergency. But when can an item such as a smartphone turn into a device that sucks away confidence, self pride and the overall well-being of a child? A device that is making a child fear when it should be used in order to help them feel safe. This is what can happen when you introduce social media to children who do understand how to fully use it safely; who don’t understand the implications and consequences that come with silly mistakes made through social media but also don’t
To begin with, social media has been proven to be a dangerous addiction due to the many negative side effects like: sleep deprivation, and self-esteem problems. Most of the adult American population is connected to some sort of social media site, and they have joined the banned wagon of people whom check their social media accounts at least five times a day. Using social media to often can be time consuming and essentially causes sleep deprivation because the user stays up late on social media. Since social media has grown in popularity many have began to believe that social media is a life necessity. It is viewed by many as a daily necessity like brushing our teeth, or yet as important as eating. People whom are constantly on social media have been linked to develop self-esteem problems because they are so consumed on pretending and portraying this image of a person they are not. Social media has became such an addiction that many people wake up and the first thing they do is...

When you think about social media what do you think of. Facebook, Twitter, Pinterest or Vine. Well social media is more than that. Social media is not just Facebook, Instagram or Twitter. Social media sites including Twitter and Facebook are in their infancy yet play an increasingly important role in the response to a disaster. After all, “one of the basic tenants of emergency management is mass communication and being able to deliver pertinent information to those who need it” (Gould, 2012). Social media offers an avenue to obtain up to the minute information on a given situation right in an individual's hands thanks to the proliferation of mobile devices. “Each disaster sparks its own complex web of fast-paced information exchange. It can both improve disaster response and allow affected populations to take control of their situation as well as feel empowered” (Maron, 2013). While traditional forms of media, print, radio and television in particular, have been the standard since the inception of the emerg...
