The History of Pies
For hundreds of years pies have served as a popular desert in most homes. Pies range from a variety of fruits, nuts, vegetables, and even meats. Sayings and beliefs have arisen such as “as American as the apple pie” as well as beliefs that the first Thanksgiving featured pumpkin and pecan pies, as well as pies always had been light and fluffy; but how true are these theories?
Pies are often formed using a pastry shell which mainly served as a baking dish, storage container, and serving vessels. For hundreds of years it served as the only form of a baking container, essentially everything was a pie. The first pies, often holding meats were tall, straight sided, and included sealed on lids and floors. These pies were often called “coffins” or “coffyns” (the word at the time meant a box or basket). Pies that held assorted meats and sauce components were baked more like a modern casserole with no pan (the crust itself was the pan, the shell tough and inedible) were open-top pies known as traps. Small pies were kn...

The recent removal of the new picture book A Birthday Cake for George Washington has placed the topic of censorship in the public’s eyesight again. A Birthday Cake for George Washington was written by Ramin Ganeshram a famed chef and writer of the book Stir it up! and was illustrated by Vanessa Brantley-Newton who has written and illustrated Let Freedom Ring. The book A Birthday Cake for George Washington is a celebratory book about Hercules the head chef in the Washington’s kitchen, who is also a slave. The book is narrated by Hercules daughter Delia who describes her father as “the general in the kitchen”. The book’s illustrations are lighthearted and make the image of slavery seem brighter and not as much of a horror that it was. This is

Let’s talk about the characters in The Sweetness at the Bottom of the Pie, and their various personalities. Alan Bradley’s character portrayal in the book is generally in strict accordance to the social values and beliefs during the period of time the story is set in. His characters reflect the realistic, British people of the 1950’s. However, Flavia de Luce, the main character, is, in a way, the stereotypical rebellious protagonist, and one of the only characters in the book whose traits do not follow the traditions of the time. Flavia’s bold personality and “tomboy-ish” ways do not match the prim-and-proper behaviour expected of women at the time.

Eve’s Food Preparation: Art and Experience in Eden The arts of the first couple before the Fall have been extensively written on. It seems that most critics view prelapsarian art as congruous and natural to Eden, as evidence of prelapsarian splendor. Ann Torday Gulden states that art in Eden is socially neutral: “Surely art is innocuous [in Eden], an integral part of paradisal bliss” (18).
The table can be filled with many different types of foods, and it differs from family to family. However, there are some foods that are seen at almost every Thanksgiving table. First off, the turkey, it is the most important part of the celebration for most families in the United States. There are multiple reasons to why the turkey has become such a big part of Thanksgiving. For example, a colonist named William Bradford wrote in his journals that colonists hunted wild turkeys during autumn of 1621, which is named as the first Thanksgiving. Another reason to why the turkey is an important part of the holiday is because the birds are big and can feed a lot of people compared to other birds such as chickens (Trex, 2008). Although the turkey is the most important food on the table for most families, it is common for most families to also serve some sort of sweet potatoes, for example, a sweet potato casserole with marshmallows. As Thanksgiving is a feast holiday a dessert is usually also served, one of the most common desserts on Thanksgiving is a pumpkin pie. The pumpkin has been around for hundreds of years, and always been a part of thanksgiving, however, it is more likely that the pumpkin was served after being baked or stewed rather than a pie on the first years when Thanksgiving were celebrated (Trex, 2008). As it is a feast holiday the table has many more types of foods, but it varies from family to family what is put onto the table, however, the turkey, sweet potatoes, and the pumpkin pie is almost always found at every Thanksgiving
A new movie that came out two weeks ago is “American Pie.” “American Pie” is a teen sex comedy that is the most sexually frank and vulgar of a long line of recently released movies that fall in this category. Other such movies that have recently come out but are not quite as frank are “Can’t Hardly Wait” and “She’s All That.” When asking what exactly is a teen sex comedy the definition is hard to explain.
American Pie” is an impressionistic ballad by Don Mclean which features unique and intriguing lyrics. It has imaginative changes in tempo, vocal delivery and instrumentation, and imparts a wide range of emotions ranging from pure joy, to melancholy and despair. The song takes the listener on an autobiographical journey through the turbulent 1960’s with references to the events that shaped the era. Don Mclean was enshrined in the Songwriters’ Hall of Fame in 2004 for his work on “American Pie” (Don McLean: Songwriters Hall of Fame Inauguration). With its use of formal structure, allusions, and figurative language, the song, “American Pie”, has many poetic qualities.

The word sausage is derived from the Latin word salsus meaning salted. The making and producing of sausage was started well over two thousand years ago. Pietism arose in the mid sixteen hundred. They tried to complete the Reformation as appose to renouncing it. Two men who significantly contributed to Pietism was, Johann Arndt who believed Christians and especially pastors should live a Godly life style as it says in Colossians 3. The other person who shaped Pietism was, Justinian von Welz who requested the gospel be shared amongst non-Christians and to establish Missions College to train and equip future missionaries. He challenged the church to be more outward focus and to take the gospel to other countries. Pietism emerged because the Lutheran church and many Reformed churches believed that the great commission was to be fulfilled by the apostles and not the church. People who have not heard the gospel were assumed to have rejected the gospel by the apostles during the New Testament times and rulers must spread the gospel in their own area. In 1675 Phillipp Spener provided a final solution to Pietism by writing six strong biblical proposals to correct the church’s weakness. (page 161) Firstly, Pastors should preach from the whole Bible and the Scripture should speak to people individually. Secondly, the lay people should all be involved in the church and be taught the difference between them and the ordained people's function in the church. Another aspect is the growth of people's spiritual lives, in addition to loving God which is of utmost importance resulting in theological knowledge. Fourthly, their lives must be a testimony reflecting Christ in every aspect of the lives. Another principal was, seminaries should train candidates how to cultivate a Spirit filled life by doing personal bible study and group devotions. Lastly, preaching should edify the believers an...
