Have you ever had a disease that has killed thousands of people worldwide have you had to give up everything to go to the hospital and give up your friday nights? I think that in the book “Drums, Girls, And Dangerous Pie”is the theme always be brave because the theme shows up in the whole book. In “Drums, Girls, And Dangerous Pie” a kid named Jeffrey is going through leukemia and is struggling to survive the battle with leukemia while his brother Steven is going through tough times at school while dealing with the stress of his parents while his dad is struggling financially. In the beginning of the book in the text it says “And I had a needle stuck in my chest for FIVE DAYS! He paused to look at my mom for confirmation. FIVE days, right,
Mommy” (Page 68) I think that is always being brave because he had a needle in him for five days I would not would not want a needle in me for that long and if I did have a needle in me for five days I would not go around bragging about it I would be complaining about it. The theme always be brave shows up again in the middle of the book too when he goes to the hospital every week to get a bone narrow. This is when they take a piece of bone out of you and bring it into the lab for testing and they tell you your iron levels and if his leukemia is getting worse or better. And I think that is brave is brave because Jeffrey had to stop whatever he was doing to go to the hospital even on a friday night. The them always be brave shows up again in the end of the book too when in the text it says “Steven, it looks like Matt Medic is out of action. You have a new mission! I slurred back, while desperately trying to avoid having my teeth touch the gaping hole in my cheek. Keep me brave. Please? Just keep me brave.” (Page 221) I think that this quote proves that the theme is always be brave because when Jeffrey thinks he is not going to be brave he asks someone to keep him brave so he can stay brave which can take a lot of courage to do, asking someone to keep you brave because you are not fully brave I would not do this because I would feel embarrassed that I am not brave especially my own sibling because I would think they would tease me.
In Fever 1793 by Laurie Halse Anderson it brings forth the lesson of perseverance. Mattie had to keep going and persevering even though her world was crashing down around her. When Mother first got sick Mattie had to look after her and attempt to care for her.
On the surface the message is don’t be afraid to be different . The story is told from the perspective of Joy Harjo , which allows the reader to know that the memoir was written with real life experiances .
Siblings – the most annoying things in the world. They’re horrible, wonderful beings, and you would sacrifice anything for them in the end. In Jordan Sonnenblick’s novel Drums, Girls & Dangerous Pie, Steven Alper, the main character, learns exactly how wonderful, and horrible, it can be to have a younger brother. Steven is your typical 8th grader – he’s continuously vexed by his younger brother Jeffrey, he has a crush on a girl who doesn’t acknowledge his existence, and he plays the drums in the All-City Jazz Band. While Steven struggles through life, his world halts when his five-year-old brother is diagnosed with leukemia, As Steven and his family strive to overcome Jeffrey’s cancer diagnosis, the Alper family learns the true meaning of sacrifice.
Courage is having to stand up for people who are being treated unfairly or if they have different skin color. In Mildred Taylor’s book Roll of Thunder, Hear My Cry Stacey has to show courage by standing up for his friends and family. Stacey is a seventh grader at Great Faith Elementary School and is the oldest Logan kid. when Papa is gone he feels like he needs to be the man of the house and watch out for his younger siblings. Stacey had to show courage when he helped Little Man get back at the bus, takes the blame for the cheat notes, and took T.J. home when he was injured.
Courage is something that is not integrally human, particularly in times of war where one’s existence is in peril. During the time of war, this is conveyed when one’s integrity is being tested the most: there are few who desire to conserve this integrity and their humanity through selfless acts in the time that generosity is a fantasy. When most individuals are occupied of thoughts of their own self preservation, selflessness preserves and fortify one’s integrity and humanity when one risks their life for others. In the novel The Cellist of Sarajevo, Steven Galloway emphasized the moral crisis that people faced when they were challenged with their own mortality and the hardship of those worse off. He
When wandering physically or mentally, courage will lead you back to the path. In “Home of the Brave” a heart touching memoir by Katherine Applegate, Kek experiences his new life in America with the assistance of his caring friends and family. He struggles along the way but never loses hope to find his mother. The most important theme in “Home of the Brave” is courage. Courage is when you have hope to better the future for you and others. This theme is shown when Kek continuously strives to find his mother even though his friends are indirectly saying that she is gone.
My theme from the novel is nothing gold can stay which means that you cannot live for a long time or you
Bravery is a hard topic, even for leaders. We all have to step up and be brave. Life cannot be successful without bravery, so this starts

This is just one line that is used to give one an image of 'brave
“There are so many ways to be brave in this world. Sometimes bravery involves laying down your life for something bigger than yourself, or for someone else. Sometimes it involves giving up everything you have ever known, or everyone you have ever loved, for the sake of something greater.”
Later, he began to not talk to others “...with only a hat to cover [his] heart”.(pg.671) Then, the main character got help from his friend and showed him how to stand up for himself with courage. “Courage” by Anne Sexton is poetry about a boy that learns about his mistake of not standing up for himself. The main character slowly loses his courage because he is being bullied by others. It states that,” ...if you faced the death of bombs and bullets you did not do it with banner, you did it with only a hat to cover your heart…”. But his friend helped him learn to stand up for yourself with courage. It says that,” If your buddy saved you and died himself in so doing, then his courage was not courage, it was love; love as simple as shaving soap.” The main character later learns to fight with courage and has “endured a great despair” because of his friend who helped him out a little. He has courage by the age of childhood to
The reason why I think the theme is be careful what you say because of multiple reasons. One reason
During all of the attempts their spirits and moods went up and down like the waves of the ocean. Through their selfless actions, the undertone of the entire story should now become clearer. Concern for others before oneself is the first element. Staying hopeful for a better future is the second. The last and most import element, the will or determination to survive even in the toughest part of life. Now readers should see how the combination of these tones compassion, hope, and willing to survive creates the mysterious tone of the story. For courage to appear everyone at some particular time or other needs to have compassion for another person, hopeful whenever there is doubt, and always striving to survive even in the severest of times. Courage is the tone not seen until any reader looks deep into oneself. Those four men had courage from the start till the end. Even though Billie died trying to reach the shore he had concern for the rest of them, stayed hopeful, and tried his hardest until the very end. Stephen Crane was the youngest child of his family dropout several colleges yet, “his time had not been wasted” (Stephen), combined each and every tone into a special short story. “The Open Boat” is not only one of his best short stories; “The Open Boat” contains a treasure map. The treasure is not gold, silver, or precious gems. The treasure is Courage. Courage to tackle any and
As one moves past the initial onslaught of rhythmic beats that calypso has to offer, it is difficult to miss the way in which it reverberates with negative and demoralizing images of women to their male counterparts. Whether it is within the lyrics of Sparrow’s “Drunk and Disorderly” or Square One’s “My Ding-a Ling”, an ample number of verses are often dedicated to making lewd comments about the female body and the suggestive body language described through thinly veiled rhymes and puns, can be offensive depending on the listener. The half naked models being displayed on the various album covers of calypso, soca and rap mix tapes further reinforces these negative connotations. This bandwagon has been jumped upon by many, including the rap genre in the last two decades, wanting to capitalize on a marketing strategy that generally purports to flag consumer attention, playing on their sense of eroticism. The sections titled “Music, Sex, Sexism” and “Woman Rising” within Peter Manuel’s text: Caribbean Currents, dive into the many issues surrounding gender within music as well as female portrayal specifically in calypso. Observations can be made simply by reading through the textual comparisons. Many aspects of this subject area allude to the fact that the issue of gender portrayal in music can be construed differently depending on who the critical listener happens to be. With the increased awareness and heightened sensitivity to the way in which females are portrayed in popular media, it is important to reflect on the impact these lyrics have on male-female relationships within the communities who most often enjoy this music genre.
