The Heroines of Sandy Hook
Bravery has a history that can be traced back to the first trace of humanity. Indeed, society depends on leaders that are brave. The word bravery itself lives within our everyday lives. There are times when we need leaders, courageous ones. At school, we need bravery in every classroom. Especially during the shooting of Sandy Hook, when six heroines dies to save their students. This was a time when intense bravery was needed to overcome evil. Teachers, how much will you sacrifice for your school? If an assailant shows up in your school, will you do the things that no others will do? Together, I believe, we could all be a little bit braver. If we become braver one by one, the world would be a much better place for everyone.

During this major event, many people sacrificed their lives to do what is right, which is stopping the perpetrator at any cost. Moving forward, bravery can be interpreted many different ways. The main definition taken out of the dictionary is “possessing or exhibiting courage or courageous endurance.” There are many common misconceptions of the term bravery, a very common misunderstood virtue. A brave person is different from a fearless one. Although these two words are mildly synonymous, they are different. To be fearless means to venture into something, without considering the consequences . To be brave is to overcome fear to stand up for what is right. Being brave does not mean doing something for fame. Occasionally, you have to ignore the criticism that it brings and never give up when you meet a challenging task. In Sandy Hook Elementary School, this aspect was shown through compassionate teachers. They gave up their lives for their student. Like what a good mother would do for her children. On the cold winter day of December 14, 2012, a tremendous act of heroism was needed. For first grade teacher Victoria Soto, it was the last thing she did. It was the thing that she would be proud of, an act of unspeakable honor. Around 2:09 PM, gunman Adam Lanza rampaged into Sandy Hook Elementary School. Adam Lanza, 20 year old male, had mental health issues that lead to this shooting. The first shots were heard and police swarmed to the scene. Armed with four guns, he took the lives of many innocent staffs and children of the school quickly. Adam murdered a total of 27 people, 6 staffs, 20 children, and his own mother. But most importantly, it was the heroism of the teachers and students that alarmed all. When the perpetrator entered the school, Principal Dawn Hochsprung and School Psychologist Mary Sherlach tried to disarm him. They sacrificed their lives during their assault. Then, Adam Lanza went into teacher Victoria Soto’s classroom. Ms. Soto tried to delude Adam by telling him that her students were in the auditorium. Adam found out that she was hiding them and killed everyone in the room before turning the gun on himself. "I felt that, in the time, I tried to be very strong for my children, I said anyone who believed in the power (of) prayer, we need to pray. And those who don't believe in prayer, think happy thoughts. ... I told the kids I love them and I was so happy they were my students. ... I didn't think we were going to live," quoted first grade teacher Kaitlin Roig-DeBellis during an interview. She witnessed the shooting and saved her own 15 students. The students and teachers of Sandy Hook held still and waited for this disastrous moment to end. There were many brave leaders that were needed during this day, they ranged from teachers to students. They all did a great job protecting their school. As basketball star Kobe Bryant has said, “The topic of leadership is a touchy one.
A lot of leaders fail because they don’t have the bravery to touch that nerve or strike that chord. Throughout my years, I haven't had that fear.”
Bravery is a hard topic, even for leaders. We all have to step up and be brave. Life cannot be successful without bravery, so this starts

Principal Hochsprung and School Psychologist Mary Sherlach tried to confront Adam Lanza. They died trying to disarm the murderer, they also alarmed the whole school through the school intercom. "That saved a lot of people," said one teacher Theodore Varga, who survived the massacre.
In honor of the heroes and heroines of this preposterous day, President Obama gives a heartbreaking speech about the Sandy Hook Shooting. The courageous fought for what was right. They showed how much a teacher is willing to do to protect the students. These people saved countless of children from death and parents from grief. much? In the final analysis, the people that lost their lives will be honored. It is only human to wish that this will never happen again. For the educators that lost their lives, they had to stand up against evil and do what is right. Without these brave souls, the number of deaths would have enumerated greatly. It is visible that this event has caused a lot of mourning for the 27 innocent people that died. Six were teachers attempting to save the school. Their integrity and exertion to fight against pure evil will forever be honored.
Bravery isn't having no fear; it is accepting and welcoming your fears and getting past
"Columbine High School Shootings." History.com. A&E Television Networks, n.d. Web. 08 Sept. 2015. Eighteen year old Eric Harris and seventeen year old Dylan Klebold were two boys with a fascination of violent video games and music. These young men were known to be “goth” and were bullied all throughout their high school careers because of their different interest. In 1999, on April 20th these boys went into their high school with mixed emotions and a devious plan to get revenge. The two teens went into the high school with handguns and killed both students and faculty members, before they turned the guns around on themselves. This is a reliable source because it informed us of both previous emotion, and the aftermath of the tragedy with detail about the boys, the school and the lives affected. This source was relevant for me because of how thoroughly it described the shooting, and gave me background information as to why and how it happened.
On the morning of October 3, four people were shot within a span of approximately 2 hours in Aspen Hill, and other nearby areas in Montgomery County. Another was killed that evening in the District of Columbia, just over the border of Silver Spring. In each shooting, the victims were killed by a single bullet fired from some distance. The pattern was not detected until after the shootings occurred on October 3. Fear quickly spread throughout the community as news of the shootings circulated. Many parents went to pick up their children at school early, not allowing them to take a school bus or walk home alone. Montgomery County and District of Columbia schools declared a lockdown, wit...
The tragedy that happened in Newton, Connecticut swept the world with a variety of emotions. Many individuals became angry or saddened by the tragedy. I think more of the individuals were angry of what happened to those 20 innocent children. Parents send their children to school thinking that they are safe but in this case ended in tragedy. I am going to discuss similarities and differences between two articles. I am also going to discuss how this shooting is a symbolic crime, how likely policy changes will be enacted and how unlikely they are to be enacted.
Bravery is like a very trusted friend, it will never let you down. That statement holds true in the great epic of "Beowulf." "Beowulf" is the story of a great hero who comes to the aid of a troubled king. Beowulf hears that king Hrothgar is having trouble and immediately comes to help with no questions asked. he defeats the monster, Grendel, with his bare hands. Beowulf then defeats Grendel's mother along with a dragon until he is fatally injured. Bravery is a very admirable characteristic that few people possess.
If a leader is not brave then they will be a weak leader. Manfred von Richthofen also knows as the Red Baron was a WW1 German fighter pilot. Richthofen once said, “I have had an experience which might perhaps be described as being shot down. At the same time, I call shot down only when one falls down. Today I got into trouble but I
On December 14th 2012, just 11 days before Christmas, an awful tragedy happened in Newtown, Connecticut. Twenty-six people were shot at the Sandy Hook Elementary School. This awful event left a lot of unanswered questions and rumors about that day. The reason for that is because the shooter killed himself after shooting twenty young children and six adults. This tragedy open the eyes of everyone; made you want to hug your loves one just a little tighter, appreciate what you still have and never take a day for granted. Even our president Barack Obama felt the pain of all those who lost their loved ones in this event. He insured everyone that he will do everything in his power to make sure a tragedy like this will not happen again. However, did you know that there have been over 44 school shootings since the tragedy of Sandy Hook Elementary shooting? I know as a future teacher and mother I want to make sure my children are safe in this world and even at school. I want to be able to make a difference in this issue and have some knowledge to have I can do that. The society should understand what really happen during the Sandy Hook event, the reasons behind why school shootings/violence are rapidly increasing each year, and have some knowledge about what we, as a society, can do to help in order for us to start seeing a decrease of these events.
Bravery is a trait that every young boy wishes to have. It is a desire that is embedded into each human being. It is only whether or not he or she acts on this desire to be brave that matter s. Aristotle writes, “{Bravery} courage is the first of human qualities because it is the quality which guarantees the others.” When Beowulf heard of the atrocities that Grendle was committing to the people of Herot, it was bravery that brought him there as their savor, and without fear he would
Bravery is a heroic quality that everyone has and when put into action it can become deadly or even unstoppable. Martin Luther King pushed through the racism as if he had no fear of the consequences. Martin Luther King stood tall as Beowulf did when fighting Grendel for the Danes; people not his family but for those in need. They both fought having no fear of their death but the greatness they would achieve in the end. Beowulf and Martin Luther King were both men who fought for the people and not themselves. Martin Luther King was pushed to the edge when being jailed for protest, But through all he prevailed and overcame. Bravery
How safe do you feel when you attend school everyday? Many students and faculty don’t really think too much about school being a dangerous place; however, after a couple of school shootings had taken place their minds and thoughts may have changed completely. On April 16, 2007, in the town of Blacksburg Virginia, a college student who attended Virginia Tech, opened gunfire to his fellow classmates. This shooting has been considered to be the biggest massacre in all of American history. There are many things to be discussed in this major tragedy. Some of them include the events leading up to the shooting, the timeline that the shootings occurred, the causes, and the significance in this particular shooting. The Virginia Tech is only one of the several examples of the horrible behavior and violence in our school systems today.
“There are so many ways to be brave in this world. Sometimes bravery involves laying down your life for something bigger than yourself, or for someone else. Sometimes it involves giving up everything you have ever known, or everyone you have ever loved, for the sake of something greater.”
Bravery is the quality of a person who displays courage and fearlessness in the face of danger. Such qualities show splendor and magnificence in a person. Fear and terror sometimes hinder the determination someone can show. Overcoming this fear is what portrays bravery. In Ernest Hemingway’s A Farewell to Arms, Frederick Henry shows bravery by freely joining the Italian army, risking his life for some ambulance drivers and swimming to freedom, being shot at the whole way.
In 2007, thirty-three students and faculty were shot and killed by a former classmate at Virginia Tech University. The shooter, Seung-Hui Cho, was a senior at Virginia Tech and was majoring in English. Two years earlier before the attack, Cho was ordered by a judge to seek help after making suicidal remarks to his roommate.
The ability to show courage is very important to be a hero. Courage means the ability to do something that you know is difficult or dangerous, and being able to carry on in spite of danger
A seemingly normal school day in Newtown, Connecticut, who knew that it would turn into one of the most devastating days of they would ever experience. About 2 years ago, students at Sandy Hook Elementary School in Newtown, Connecticut were involved in the most devastating event of the year. According to an article by the Huffington Post, a mentally troubled man in his twenties named Adam Lanza shot 20 children and six staff members, with his mother’s weapons. His mother had apparently grown up with guns and thought it would be good to have in their house. Prior to driving to the school, he even shot his mother, but his motive is unknown. He drove to the school leaving a 12-gauge shotgun in the car, walking towards the school, he shot through the front entrance. “Lanza moved toward two classrooms of kindergartners and first-graders,” police said. Within five minutes he managed to kill 20 students ages 6 and 7 and six adults. He had fired more than 150 shots from a .223-caliber Bushmaster rifle. When police started to arrive he shot himself in the head, taking his own life. This incident was the deadliest mass shooting at a grade school in the US; in total 26 lives were lost.
