The tragedy that happened in Newton, Connecticut swept the world with a variety of emotions. Many individuals became angry or saddened by the tragedy. I think more of the individuals were angry of what happened to those 20 innocent children. Parents send their children to school thinking that they are safe but in this case ended in tragedy. I am going to discuss similarities and differences between two articles. I am also going to discuss how this shooting is a symbolic crime, how likely policy changes will be enacted and how unlikely they are to be enacted.
First I am going to discuss he similarity between the two articles. These two articles have very few similarities. These two articles focus on ways to help society to prevent another incident like the Sandy Hook shooting. They came up with policies that can try to prevent another shooting to this degree to happen in a school again. They both focus on the safety of the society.
Second I am going to discuss the differences between the two articles. These two articles have a variety of differences. The main difference is how they are going to prevent another shooting. The NRA focuses more on a program called National School Shield Emergency Program. This program focuses getting a trained security officer put in every school to help protect the children. The NRA said that this program will be free to make sure that every school as the chance to get this program. Compared to the NRA, the other article comes up with a variety of ideas to help out with the protection of children. Most of these ideas revolve improving permitting standards. Making them more strict so individuals have to renew them every couple of years. It also talks about going threw safety and fire training requ...

...g, that could have raised questions about policy changes. Even know a policy change hasn't happened yet, I do think that eventually we will have new policies on guns. The focus of the policies may not be directly related to schools, but i think they will help prevent other shootings. I think policies will focus on the process of buying guns and permits that go along with owning guns. With these policies going into effect, I think they can help prevent other shootings like the one at Sandy Hook Elementary from happening again.
In the end both of these articles both have ideas about policies that need to be put in place. Even know they may come from different prospectives they both have the same idea of keeping citizens safe. I hope that eventually some of the policies they have came up with are put into place. I guess we will just have to wait and see what happens.
In the article “Gun Control Can Prevent School Shootings,” Bennett shares the effects of gun violence in the past, present, and future. The Sandy Hook shooting occurred on December 14, 2012 when twenty children and six adult staff members were killed. Barely a month after the shooting, eleven of the families affected by the shooting went to meet privately with Joe Biden, and members from the Congress and cabinet. Bennett stated, “They were preparing to wade into some of the roughest waters in American politics: the gun debate.” President Obama gave a speech in Connecticut vowing to fight for change. And as Bennett put it, “Members of Congress started acting as parents instead of politicians.” Bennett explained to the families that they couldn't get rid of assault weapons or high capacity ammunition magazines, no matter how bad the shooting was. The families got angry and stated they did not want to know what they couldn't do, but what they could do to honor their children.
Sandy Hook is an elementary school in Connecticut that was invaded by a shooter, Adam Lanza. Twenty-eight people were shot and killed, twenty of them being children between the ages of five and ten. Before Lanza arrived, he shot and killed his mother who was a teacher at this school. The article was published the day of the shooting to the Washington Post. The article was written announce what had actually happened during this tragic event. The article was directed towards parents with kids and adults to inform everyone on the catastrophe and to hopefully make schools as safe as they could possibly be. Additionally the author also states that this is not the right time to try and discuss the gun control laws.
According to Blitzer’s Rhetorical Situation the main components in a speech are looking for a fitting response, an audience that’s listening, constraints and a rhetorical response. (Bitzer, 1968) The speech that I used to illustrate what Bitzer’s rhetorical situation was the speech President Obama gave about the shooting that took place in Connecticut, at the Sandy Hook Elementary school. The school shooting took place on December 14th, 2012. A twenty-year-old man by the name of Adam Lanza shot and killed twenty-six people then killed himself; Adam Lanza killed twenty children and six adults. In this speech, I will tell you Obama’s exigence, audience, constraints, and fitting response.
By appealing to several different views, Wheeler is able to grab every reader’s attention. Using schools as his focus point grabs the reader’s attention on a personal level. A school is a place where your children, your friends, your spouses all could be, and we still aren’t motivated to change our gun control laws. Tragic events do not have to happen like those that occurred at Virginia Tech, The Jewish Day care in Los Angeles, and Pearl High School. Wheeler believes concealed carry should be allowed in every school. Let’s make the students and teachers of these schools and colleges their own heroes. Wheeler says we must embrace all of the varied disciplines contributing to preparedness and response. We must become more willing to be guided and informed of empirical finding. School officials base policies on irrational fears. Wheeler states, “What is actually worse, the fear of what we think might happen, or the massacres that actually did occur?” Wheelers essay is very well thought out and uses fear, credibility, and factual evidence to support his beliefs. My belief is we should allow teachers and students to have guns at schools, as long as they have gone through training to do
The events surround the deaths of four students in Kent, Ohio are disorderly and violent. In the government’s investigation after the shootings, the officials made several recommendations to students of the future. As the massacre is looked back upon, there are several key events that
April 20th, 1999, Columbine High School in Littleton, Colorado, experienced a mass shooting. Thirteen people were injured and more than twenty were injured. Twelve were students and one was a teacher. Two students, Eric Harris and Dylan Klebold opened fire on their high school for forty one minutes before turning their guns on themselves and committing suicide. School shootings are notorious for making headline news but in 1999, school shooting were not as prevalent as they are in the present day. The media blew up on the catastrophe that was Columbine and many questions were raised, who were these kids and why did they do this? Speculation arose about why they did it. Maybe they were bullied for being goth and social outcasts or maybe they
Sandy Hook Shooting Conspiracies On December Fourteen 2012 Adam Lanza allegedly drove to Sandy Hook Elementary, his old elementary school, and shot and killed twenty-six students and faculty, then turned the gun on himself before apprehension by police. The shooting at Sandy Hook Elementary was a tragic event, it’s hard not to sympathize with the families of those killed. There is a movement, however, that claims the shooting was fake (Spaeth). IT’s believed the shooting was staged in order to pave the way for stricter gun control (Salazar).
One of the biggest debates in education is how to respond to gun violence in schools. According to BBC, “There were 64 school shootings in 2015” (BBC). One response to the rise in gun violence in schools is to arm teachers. Even our President has mentioned “giving a bonus” (Davis 2) to teachers that The fact that the idea of arming teachers is even being discussed is disappointing. Bringing more guns into a school is not the answer to gun violence. Most people that defend the idea that guns will “help” keep schools safe have basically three points: (1) teachers will be trained in gun safety, (2) it helps deter potential school shooters, and (3) it will make the students feel more safe. Even though there is some truth to those points, I think that the cons of arming teachers vastly outweigh the pros of arming teachers.
On December 14th 2012, just 11 days before Christmas, an awful tragedy happened in Newtown, Connecticut. Twenty-six people were shot at the Sandy Hook Elementary School. This awful event left a lot of unanswered questions and rumors about that day. The reason for that is because the shooter killed himself after shooting twenty young children and six adults. This tragedy open the eyes of everyone; made you want to hug your loves one just a little tighter, appreciate what you still have and never take a day for granted. Even our president Barack Obama felt the pain of all those who lost their loved ones in this event. He insured everyone that he will do everything in his power to make sure a tragedy like this will not happen again. However, did you know that there have been over 44 school shootings since the tragedy of Sandy Hook Elementary shooting? I know as a future teacher and mother I want to make sure my children are safe in this world and even at school. I want to be able to make a difference in this issue and have some knowledge to have I can do that. The society should understand what really happen during the Sandy Hook event, the reasons behind why school shootings/violence are rapidly increasing each year, and have some knowledge about what we, as a society, can do to help in order for us to start seeing a decrease of these events.
In this article Emmett Tyrell informs us about gun violence in schools and what the NRA has proposed to stop the gun violence, and mass shootings across America. While the gun control debate rages, many schools have become war zones, and all school zones are vulnerable. The National Rifle Association's has come up with a 225-page report contains dozens of recommendations to improve safety in our nation’s schools. The NRA’s National School Shield program will train and enable school personnel to carry firearms to protect our nation’s children.
This was a very informative article. I was unaware of all the deaths in result of gun violence. I didn’t realize that people who worked for the government or who was in congress were often targets. In order to fully get rid of gun violence in schools, each and every school should have metal detectors that can detect weapons and always have security guards on duty. By doing this, parents are more comfortable with sending their students off to school. Taking this step in every school around the world would definitely cost lots of money but it will honestly be worth it. After all the school shooting we’ve heard about, we’d definitely be saving plenty of lives just in case an incident does happen. I went to highschool in a rough neighborhood and
The essential differences between the two types of gun violence in the articles and film is the fact that the article discusses gun violence in mass shooting and at active shooter reports when the film discusses the after math that takes place after the gun violence. The film focuses on the offenders who committed crimes and how they want to come together and help their committees. Focusing on how offenders ended up in prison and how they feel about the crimes they committed. Although the articles give more details about where the crime took place and for how many minutes. With holding so many facts about crime scenes and victims, providing information about active shooters and their whereabouts. I believe the same solution can be used to address both types of gun violence, because they both make people stop and wonder what if. No one wants to be sitting behind bars for the rest of your life and reading about shooters who statistically commit suicide after their own crimes that I believe would prevent further gun violence. I also believe if more people were made aware of the statistics that would resolve some of issues that many cities are facing everyday with violence gun crimes. The most important solution is ending gun violence and figuring out ways to make communities more aware of the amount of gun related crimes happen in their own backyard. Ultimately ending in everyone coming together and realizing that gun violence needs to end in order to protect our loves
If something happens, the police -- despite all the good intentions, is 15 to 20 minutes. It 's too long. It 's not going to help those kids” (LaPierre). The NRA feels that armed police or armed security in schools would prevent mass school shootings. It would allow someone to intervene before police could arrive. LaPierre talks about how enforcing the already 9,000 federal gun laws already on the books is also strategic. “Chicago, 89 of 90 in the country in terms of enforcing the reasonable federal gun laws NRA supports on the books against felons and drug dealers and gangs with guns, the people doing the killing”
Gun laws are a big controversial topic in America, so starting off I feel like there are a lot of school, mall, or just regular shootings in general in America. Like I feel like we are seeing a new shooting every other week, And sometimes twice a week. But I don't think that changing the gun laws will change anything at all and here's why.
How would you feel if your child was to come home and tell you that, that one angry grumpy teacher is now allow to carry a gun to school? That seems pretty mediocre, I know if I was to have a child I wouldn’t be ok with it. Some politicians are trying to decide on rather or not should teachers be allowed to carry guns to school for protection. Due to the recent gun incidents in the schools all across the world, politicians are really considering rather teachers should be equipped with guns to protect theirselves and the children under their supervision. I personally don’t think that this is such a great idea, as a matter of fact it’s ludicrous. Teachers shouldn’t be allowed to carry guns in the school because the generation isn’t quite ready for that change in history, that’s the reason we have resource officers in the schools, and adding another gun to situation isn’t going to always be a good solution .
