“Words are powerful, use them carefully.”- Jay Electronica. This quote made me think of the book that I have recently, Hate List, by Jennifer Brown. The book is about a Valerie Leftman’s boyfriend, Nick, opened fire on their school cafeteria. Valerie faces her own injury and confronts her guilt as she returns to school to complete her senior year. With that memory lurking in her mind, she still enjoys life as she works with old relationships and make new ones. I believe the theme in this book is be careful what you say. I think this because the school shooting was caused by other students bullying Valerie and Nick, causing Nick to open fire. The reason why I think the theme is be careful what you say because of multiple reasons. One reason
In To Kill a Mockingbird, the theme plays an important role during the course of the novel. Theme is a central idea in a work of literature that contains more than one word. It is usually based on an author’s opinion on a subject. The theme of innocence should be protected is found in conflicts, characters, and symbols. In To Kill a Mockingbird, a conflict that connects to the theme that innocence should be protected is the death of Tom Robinson.
I don’t think people realize how much their words and actions can hurt others, and this is shown throughout the entire novel. The first page of the book starts off with a post from a website called gRaCeFULLY. This website is completely dedicating to gossiping about all the drama that is going on in the school. The things posted are directed at specific individuals and are very hurtful: “Word is that [she] is ready and willing. Oh wait, sorry, that’s OLD news. She’s already screwed half the varsity lettermen” (McCreight 84). Although not every school has a website like this, it shows that every school is affected by some form of bullying. Also, Amelia’s best friend, Sylvia, is rude and says hurtful things to Amelia all the time. Amelia isn’t too bothered by these comments, and defends her actions by saying, “She did it when she felt like you’d hurt her feelings first…I tried to overlook the stuff she said…because I actually think she was jealous” (McCreight 29). Throughout the entire novel bullying is shown and I think Kimberly McCreight did that on purpose to show how much of a problem this is today in society. She also shows the lesson to always tell the truth, because lying isn’t worth
One example of the theme occurs when the author first introduces the story. “But the summer I was 9 years old, the town I had always loved morphed into a beautifully heartbreaking and complicated place.” (pg. 1). The author is saying that the year she turned nine, she found out something about her town that broke her heart and changed the way she saw it. This quote is important because it supports the theme. It shows that now she is older she has learned something about her town that made her wiser than when she was younger. She is now more informed because the new information changed her and caused her to begin to mature.
...gs. One of these things is that no matter what happens, there is always a positive outcome available, even if we need to work to find it. Remembering this theme will remind me that no matter how bleak things look, there is always a way for things to get better. It will also encourage me to work harder to discover this way, which will encourage me to work harder even in normal situations.
Most acts of bullying are dealt with, but not always in the correct way of doing so. Bullying Policies in many schools state that bullying is not tolerated and has consequences that will be used if bullying occurs. However, Jodi draws our attention to the issue that not all schools have a policy that states the consequences of bullying and practically just tells the victim to fight back and stand up for himself. This generally makes things worse for the victim by allowing the bully think that the victim is trying to "embarrass" the bully. With repeated attacks on one, it will have him/her believe they are either "useless" or think that they have to do something to prevent the next attacks, and this may not always be pretty or the "right" way. The results of these intense, repeated attacks can cause the victim Just like this book, shootings are a result of bullying, derogation, and ignorance and end ultimately end with many
My theme from the novel is nothing gold can stay which means that you cannot live for a long time or you
An idea that recurs in or pervades a work of art of literature can be referred to as a “Theme”. Themes often explore timeless and universal ideas and may be implied rather than stated explicitly. Theme is an important part of fictional stories. Several themes are presented in the novel to kill a mocking bird. One of the reoccurring themes in to kill a mockingbird is courage.
The universal themes that are used in the story are racism and better the young.”And mothers and fathers, if it is too late for you, think of your children. Make it safe so they don't have to run away, for I want for you and your children what I had.”( Baker, 83) These themes are universal because both talk about things that has happened multiple times. Like better the young. We want the young to be the greatest generation and not make the mistakes we had made. The children of each generation need to be better than the last generations. The other theme racism. Racism was back then and it is now. The theme talks about the racism in the past and in the present and in the future. Racism will be the theme for lots of things in the present but also
During the 60’s and 70’s, people have thrashed out with their words and each other. This caused some awareness in schools due to the offensiveness of the matter. During the 80’s schools began on focusing on preventing this kind of speech on their campuses. Since then, students have become more and more sensitive in a negative way. The authors used an example of a kid shouting “Shut up, you water buffalo” at an Israeli born student. That incident made national news, just for calling another kid a “water buffalo.” Another example is when a university found a student guilty of racial harassment for reading a book honoring student opposition to the Ku Klux Clan. The picture on the cover of the book offended one of the student’s co-workers. Just because the student was reading a book, minding his own business, the student was punished from the university. Never said anything or hurt anyone physically, and his education was ruined by someone taking offense to a book he was reading. The authors used this extreme example to prove that accepting the fact that student are fragile and letting them be fragile is not the right way to go and the past can prove
How safe do you feel when you attend school everyday? Many students and faculty don’t really think too much about school being a dangerous place; however, after a couple of school shootings had taken place their minds and thoughts may have changed completely. On April 16, 2007, in the town of Blacksburg Virginia, a college student who attended Virginia Tech, opened gunfire to his fellow classmates. This shooting has been considered to be the biggest massacre in all of American history. There are many things to be discussed in this major tragedy. Some of them include the events leading up to the shooting, the timeline that the shootings occurred, the causes, and the significance in this particular shooting. The Virginia Tech is only one of the several examples of the horrible behavior and violence in our school systems today.
Another theme is to be understanding. The author talks about being there for someone and understanding his or her pain along with trying to make...
Jealousy can make you make bad choices and actions. That is exactly what happened to the kids Venus. When Margot moved to Venus with her Mom and Dad she missed the sun. She missed the warmth and comforting feeling of the sun . All she had now was rain. She was jealous of the people that were still on earth. She was jealous that she couldn't feel that warmth anymore. So when the scientist said that the sun would come out after seven years Margot’s class talked and talked about the sun. So much that the other kids got jealous that Margot could remember the sun and they couldn’t. They locked her in a closet they were so jealous. Then while they went out and played they forgot all about Margot and her stories of the sun. They were playing in
This theme is important to me because to me it means that there is no reason to give up because if I try, everything will come out at least kind of how I want it to be. One example from my past is when I broke my leg.
There are many themes that occur and can be interpreted differently throughout the novel. The three main themes that stand out most are healing, communication, and relationships.
As you will see in the following paragraphs, there are many reasons why this theme is the most important and strongest theme of all. One example
