A person needs three things to motivate them, someone to love, something to hope for, or something to do (Flight of the Phoenix, 2004). “Leadership is often achieved by meeting” these three “basic human needs” (ACU, 2012). By implementing leadership theories that meet at least one of these needs you will be able to create a team with a purpose.
Someone to Love:
Bass’ transformational leadership includes a component dealing with inspirational motivation and higher order values. Bass defined transformational leadership in terms of how the leader affects followers, who are intended to trust, admire and respect the transformational leader. Vroom-Yetton-Jago’s normative decision model includes five forms of decision-making and helps leaders and followers determine how much input followers should have in the decision-making process. On a basic level, when leaders allow followers to patriciate in the decision-making process, they are giving them something to do. When employing this model a leader is ultimately giving their followers five possible things to do decide, consult individually, consult group, facilitate, and delegate.
Fiedler’s contingency theory “assumes leaders are either task oriented or relationship oriented” and those who are task oriented are concerned with “accomplishing tasks and getting work done” (Nelson and Quick, 2015). These task-oriented leaders, those concerned with work rather than relationships, appeal to followers who want the most basic of the three needs, something to do. Transformational leadership describes a leader moving followers beyond immediate self-interests through idealized influence (charisma), inspiration motivation, intellectual stimulation, or individualized consideration. Transformational leaders are change agents. They influence the mission and objectives to make way for a brighter future for the organization. Followers are motivated to do more than is originally expected because of their feelings of trust and respect for the leader.
Transformational leadership also integrates well with a biblical worldview because both advocate valuing followers as well as leaders, the importance of ethical behavior, the need to forgive and learn from mistakes, and the value of a high moral example. Kouzes and Posner advocate leaders having a “moral authority to lead” (2007, p. 41), practicing personal accountability and working to improve all aspects of their follower’s lives. This others-centered leadership approach fits well in the Christ centered atmosphere of a Christian school.
Before you can summarize the concepts related to leadership theory, you have to define what leadership is. Leadership is a process of social influence in which one person can enlist the aid and support of others in the accomplishment of a common task or goals. The fundamental concept of leadership is indirection. In any organization, the leader indirectly impacts the performance of the organization through the performance of individual team members. To make that impact, the leader takes on the role of the coach, and the inspiratory. As the coach, the leader improves the performer's skills. As the inspiratory, the leader inspires the passion required for optimal performance. A good leader can make decisions with a clear mind and will listen to theirs but can run through every consequence and possibility in their head. They take every angle and come out with the best answer for the majority of the people or situations it effects. And will not let their emotions be shut off but will have feeling where it is needed.
(Northouse 185) defines transformational leadership as a process that changes and transforms people. It is concerned with emotions, values, ethics, standards, and long-term goals.(Avolio, 1999; Bass & Avolio, 1990a) suggests that transformational leadership is concerned with improving the performance of followers and developing followers to their fullest potential. (Kuhnert, 1994) also advocates that persons who exhibit transformational leadership often have a strong set of internal values and ideals, and they are effective at motivating followers to act in ways that support the greater good rather than their own self-interests (Northouse 191) It is in the light of Northouse, Avolio and Bass that I deduced Mrs. Smith to be a transformational leader.

Transformational leadership, as detailed in Course 15, is a concept centered molding Airman around you, from subordinates, to peers and benefiting all of those in the chain of command even those above you. One specific tenet of Transformational leadership that I find inspiring and critically important to a developing leader is Inspirational Motivation, or Charming.
Everyone has a different definition of what makes someone a leader. My definition is not a statement of requirements, but more so a list of characteristics. I believe it takes a strong, independent, dependable, open-minded, thoughtful, selfless, smart and creative, someone who can work well with others, able to work under pressure, respectful, and experienced individual to be a leader. I believe it is someone who knows who they are and know their morals, someone who has already found who they are in life and accepts who they are, making what I believe the most important characteristic is, is someone who knows and sticks with their personal values. If someone cannot respect values and stick to their word, then how can they be a leader of others? A leader takes a lot of work, but if you are good at it, it may seem like nothing. Some people are leaders and do not even know it, like role models. When little kids look up to certain people that have impacted their lives in a way, they will see those people as role models. Truth is, leaders are everywhere and not everyone knows or can see that. It's not always the person who stands out for taking control or being bossy, but the one with the characteristics and high values that do the right things, even when no one is watching.
Fiedler’ model is considered the first highly visible theory to present the contingency approach. It stated that effective groups depend on a proper match between a leader’s style of interacting with subordinates and the degree to which the situation gives control and influence to the leader (Fiedler, 1967). Fiedler argued that the leadership style could be indentified by taking a Least Preferred Co-worker (LPC) questionnaire he designed. When evaluating a least enjoyed co-worker, a relationship oriented leader scores high in LPC, while a task oriented leader scores low. Fiedler identified three contingency or situational dimensions: leader-member relations, task structure, and position power. A leader will have more control if he has better leader-member relations, high structured job, and stronger position power. The task-oriented leaders perform best in situations of high and low control, while relationship-oriented leaders perform best in moderate control situations. Feedler views an individual’s leadership style as fixed. To assure leader effectiveness, either situation needs to change to fit the leader or the leader needs to be replaced to fit the situation. But in reality, a leader can not use a homogeneous style to treat all their followers in a similar fashion in their work unit (Robbins & Judge, 2011, p. 382).
Whether a follower is strong or weak, as long as he or she works a leader or organization will complete their tasks at hand. Effective followers support ethical leaders and oppose those who are unethical. They also make informed decisions and act on them. Contrastingly, ineffective followers will not actively contribute to the team and may support unethical leaders. Followers are all different and should be treated accordingly because they do have power and authority. Transformational leadership is one of the most popular leadership styles. According to Kendrick (2011), “Transformational leadership involves four factors: 1. idealized influence, 2. inspirational motivation, 3. intellectual stimulation, and 4. individual consideration.” These four factors make transformational leadership have an impact on followers. In the contingency leadership theories both the task and the follower’s characteristics are used to determine which behavior is better suited for effective leadership. Within the contingency approach are several factors to consider: the quality of relationships, tasks and activities to be performed, perceptions of the leader based on history, the motivation of both the leader and the follower, and personal characteristics influencing the situation (Leadership Theories and Studies, 2009). The first contingency leadership theories studies were conducted by Fred Fiedler, a leadership researcher and the earliest pioneer in the field of contingency leadership, who focused on how situational variables interact with leader personality and behavior (Contingency Approach to Management, 2009); from these studies he developed the contingency leadership model. The contingency leadership model is used to determine whether a person’s leadership style is task– or relationship-oriented, and if the situation (leader-member relationships, task structure and position power) matches the leader’s style to maximize performance (Lussier & Achua, 2010). Fielder discovered that leadership effectiveness was dependent on the factors of the leader–follower relationship, task structure, and leader position.
