Have you ever thought about what qualities make a hero? Many people would define a hero as a cartoon character for example Superman or Batman or Someone that fly’s into burning building, fights evil and always rescues the world. They would also have super powers like super strength, also have the ability to fly. Others consider a hero as someone that acts of bravery as heroism. And, those who have performed truly amazing acts in the face of grave danger. Some consider firefighter, law enforcement, military and civil right activist our everyday heroes. What we all know is that every hero need to have qualities like bravery, determination, be willing to sacrifice, and self-confidence to be able to achieve their purpose and to be consider a hero.
The main qualities that a hero should have is being brave, which would be the biggest trait of a hero. A hero needs to overcome huge obstacles to rescue other. Bravery is important when saving lives, because they have to trust themselves. Bravery can also be define as, being able to face your fears and stand

tall. Bravery can be considered risking your own life or standing up for people’s rights. Bravery is standing up for what you believe in despite other opinions or beliefs. For example, Martin Luther King Jr. who was a civil right activist and fought equality for African Americans. King needed to be brave to be able to achieve all that he achieved in life. King was assassinated for standing and fighting for others rights. Military is also a good example of bravery because they are fighting for this country and helping to keep us all safe. While not being aware of what they are facing once they are deployed. The next quality is determination.
A hero should have determination because they have to fight something, no matter how weak or strong they are. Determination is all about staying focused and not resting until the task on hand is complete. With determination a hero can ultimately achieve what they desire most. For example Cesar Chavez who was a Latino civil right activist and co-founded National Farm Workers Association. Chavez fought for the field worker to be treated fair and to be able to earn a decent pay. Also Rosa Louise McCauley Parks who was also a civil right activist would be considered a hero with determination. Parks was the first lady of civil rights and “the mother of the freedom movement”. Parks refused to obey bus drivers order to give up her seat in the colored section to a white passenger, after the white section was filled. Parks helped launch nationwide effort to end segregation of public
facilities. Also, Heroes should have the quality of willing to sacrifices. Heroes usually sacrifices in effort to give up something so that others can be better off. Hero’s sometimes have to give up something personal to achieve something greater. True hero’s sacrifices without hesitating. Each and every day of the year fire fighter, come to the rescue of those in need. These people are not just doing their job, they are the heroes who take each task to heart and each life saved is a victory for their team. For example, on September 11, 2001, firefighters were among the first on the scene as people were rushing down the stairs to escape, firefighters were rushing up those same stairs to help bring people out of the building. As they went up to put out the raging fires, many were caught in the buildings' collapse. Also in August 2015 three fire fighters died in a wildfire in north-central Washington trying to fight a wildfire. They gave up their lives trying to protect others. The last quality is confidence a hero needs to be self –confidence in themselves and their abilities when facing with a crisis. When a hero has self- confidence they can overcome obstacles. Also when a hero is presented with an opportunity which requires them to step outside of their comfort zone, they can accept the challenge because of self-confidence. For example Spencer Stone, who was one of the American heroes who thwarted a terrorist attack on a French train, if Stone wasn’t confidence in himself he wouldn’t have tackled the terrorist and hundreds of people would have be killed. Also in Fort Worth Texas, a police officer rescued a drowning man from a lake. Officer Kellie Whitehead ran towards the water and pulled the drowning victim out of the water. Officer Kellie Whitehead had enough self- confidence in herself to rescue the drowning man. In conclusion, bravery, determination, and the ability to sacrificed, and self-confidence are some of the qualities that a hero has, whether it’s a superhero or an everyday hero. Many heroes have all of these quality’s or some like Martin Luther King Jr. who was brave and determined to fight for African Americans rights and fought for those rights until he was assassinated. As well as fire fighter who are brave to enter burning building and determine to save that person they are also willing to sacrifice their own life. Even everyday people are willing to sacrifice their own life which goes to prove that humanity existed. Sometime these heroes lack in some of these qualities but excel in others. Cesar Chavez lacked in the quality of self-confidence because he went into strike. Because he didn’t believe in himself and his work to successes in time. But exceled in determination because he was willing to go the length of sacrificing his life and his family for the cost. At the end his determination, sacrificed and bravery helped him succesed. Cesar Chavez was prove that a hero can lack a quality but excel in other. All of these heroes who have these quality have change the world for better and have open our minds for hope.
Dictionaries’ definitions of the word hero are exceedingly vague. A standard dictionary limits the definition of a hero to, “a man of distinguished courage or ability, admired for his brave deeds and noble qualities” (Dictionary.com). Heroes are people, not just men, who are generous, courageous, and take every event as part of the whole stream of life rather than as a critical moment. Humanity, endurance, and perseverance are other critical characteristics of a deserving candidate for such a title.
In order for a person to be considered a hero they must have a certain quality. The quality that a hero should have is bravery. All heroes should be brave because if they go into a dangerous situation, they need to be able to stand strong under the fear. “ He thought you were only brave if you knew something was dangerous and scary and you carried on regardless(Mount)”.
Over the course of history the definition of what makes a hero has made many changes. Beowulf, Superman, and firefighters are all examples of heroes, but they are very different when broken down. Today’s society defines a hero by his values, his strength, and his journey.
According to the Merriam-Webster dictionary a hero is an individual who is admired for great bravery or fine qualities. To me a hero is so much more than a person who shows great bravery. When I think of a hero many fine qualities come to mind; intelligence, courage, altruism, compassion and great bravery.
What images are associated with the words “hero”? A muscular Hercules saving the world from Hades? A knight in shining armor bravely riding into combat? Words like bravery, strength, pride, and self-sacrifice are commonly connected with a classic hero. But are those the only characteristics that make someone heroic? A dictionary definition of a hero is “a man of distinguished courage or ability, admired for his brave deeds and noble qualities”; however, this is a very elastic definition and there are many other types and definitions of heroes depending on circumstances. Is there one that is correct? Do all heroes share any common characteristics? According to Orin E. Klapp, a hero is “a person, real or imaginary, who evokes the appropriate attitudes and behavior” (135). Heroes can be determined by, and change due to and by societal norms, but at the same time retain certain traits or perform common actions. Bilbo Baggins from The Hobbit, the legendary British thief Robin Hood, and Neville Longbottom from the Harry Potter series all demonstrate that understanding who a hero is involves understanding the situation, his or her actions, as well as the society to which the hero is presented..
An English proverb states, “ A hero is a man who is afraid to run away”. I agree with this proverb, because when you see a hero in a comic book, they have super cool back stories, are not afraid to fight, and stare danger in the face and not blink. They are not afraid of anything. That’s nice to look up to, but they are not real. Our definition of a hero is too much for one man to become, you can do something honorable, heroic, but you will never actually be a hero because it's too much, in real life. Heroes don’t just do it so they can get paid, or respect. What really determines whether someone is a hero is if they choose to do something about it in a bad situation. We have people that do heroic acts, for example, people putting their lives before others. Those people cannot be heroes because they get paid to do it, they are, firefighters, cops, and military, they get paid to help people, so they aren't considered a hero.
What I personally believe makes a hero, is a person that is brave and courageous. Courage is one of the biggest characteristics you need to be considered a hero. Heroism is all about how far you’ll go to protect or serve the people and how far you go is all about how much courage and bravery you have to take such quality to the next level.
Bravery is key to being a hero. It is what makes them strong and fearless. “He is more than a hero” (Sappho). When heroes are brave, people see them greater than they actually are. In the novel Ralph showed bravery when he went into Jacks clan and got Piggy’s glasses back that Jack stole from him. “I’ve come to see about the fire, said Ralph, and about Piggy’s specs” (Page 176). “Willingness to risk personal safety to help others” (Schlenker). Risking your life for others is a great example of bravery. Rosa Parks is an example of a hero because she was brave and did not say no when told to move her spot on a segregated bus (“Rosa Parks Biography”). It is what makes you a hero; it is what makes people feel safe. People count on the hero to be brave. Rosa Parks was not scared; she was selfless and heroic. If the hero is scared, he does not have heroic
Gerard Way once said, ”Heroes are ordinary people who make themselves extraordinary“ (Gerard Way). Heroism consists of people never giving up and always trying to improve for the better good of society. Being a true hero is always putting others before yourself and they confront problems head on with determination even though things might not turn out the way they would like them to.
When I think of a hero I immediately think of someone who is strong, intelligent, handsome, and daring. Upon closer examination, many different qualities than these become apparent. Courage, honesty, bravery, selflessness, and the will to try are just a few of the overlooked qualities of a hero. The definition of heroism changes with the context and time. Heroes of the past are not necessarily heroes of present time and vise versa.
First, a hero must be good at heart. A hero has to know how to give and
To better understand what a heroic quality is it may be easier to describe what a hero is not. Nearly everyday on television people talk of athletes and celebrities as being heroes, but are they? To put it mildly, they are not heroes at all. Possibly role models, but for the most part, not in possession of heroic qualities. When Michael Jordan and Bruce Willis, by risking their lives, save an abandoned child from a typhoon they will possess the qualities to be called heroes in my opinion. Policemen and firemen are at times classified as heroes. Until they prove themselves they are just ordinary people. The title heroic is not given by occupation, rather by achievement.
Bravery is considered a heroes’ trait. It’s seen in all the stories; the hero marches through every seemingly insurmountable obstacle, overcoming the unthinkable with overwhelming displays of valor. They are able to do this even if it looks impossible, even if they are scared, because they often have no other choice; they can either duck their heads and take what’s coming, or they can take action and try to turn things to their advantage. Bravery can be a choice, and this is something I learned firsthand as a child.
Heroism is defined as an act of courage and an act of selflessness. They reflect the highest levels of morality in society. Heroes have embodied the morality codes of civilizations throughout the ages. When heroes display courage, observers often identify with that courage. The refusal to take the easy way out and the ability to act in spite of fear, is what makes a person a hero. This is the way everyone wishes to react in the midst of a crisis. As witnessed in literature and real life, mankind needs heroes to provide an inspirational role model, an escape from the mundane, and a guide for morality.
Fear is the main thing that people have to overcome in order to become a hero. Also, people that become heroes tend to be more concerned about other people’s well-beings instead of their own. Another mental aspect as well as caring and fear is also being able to see the entire situation through the perspective of others. Heroes do not give up when they have a fear of something. An example of this is when a person goes into a burning building to save someone.
