What makes a true hero? Heroes can be big roles in people’s lives. “He is more than a hero, he is a God in my eyes” (Sappho). Sappho is saying that people see heroes greater than the average person. “People identify with their heroes and try to become more like them, in their own minds and through their actions” (Schlenker). Schlenker is saying that people want to be and act like heroes. Author William Golding believes a true hero will make mistakes and falter in judgements. They will focus on the bigger picture. Heroes will be brave and they will ultimately face their fears obstacles. Also, heroes are noble, sacrificial, courageous, and accomplish high goals. Jack who was corrupted by power and evil. A hero has integrity, bravery, courage, and is a leader, who is caring, rather than being corrupted by power and evil. Integrity is the first qualification that goes into being a hero. In Lord of the Flies when the Naval Captain comes and saves the boys, he asked them how many did they all kill and Ralph takes responsibility of it all (Page 201). He shows tremendous amount of integrity by being true to himself. “Peoples integrity is a key predictor of the qualities they prefer in their heroes” (Schlenker). People always want to be like heroes and make similar choices as heroes make. They often find the characteristics of heroes appealing and something they want to be. Pennsylvania State’s football coach Joe Paterno described, “Success without honor is an unseasoned dish. It will satisfy your hunger, but it will not taste good” (Schlenker). Success can be present without honor; however, success will be more meaningful if one is honorable. “At such times death isn’t far from me” (Sappho). This relates to Ralph in Lord of the Flies because he can move on and death isn’t around him. Ralph had to have integrity in order to accept the past so that he could move on with the future. Jack was unable to do this; therefore, Ralph had the heroic quality. Another important quality a hero must have is bravery.
Bravery is key to being a hero. It is what makes them strong and fearless. “He is more than a hero” (Sappho). When heroes are brave, people see them greater than they actually are. In the novel Ralph showed bravery when he went into Jacks clan and got Piggy’s glasses back that Jack stole from him. “I’ve come to see about the fire, said Ralph, and about Piggy’s specs” (Page 176). “Willingness to risk personal safety to help others” (Schlenker). Risking your life for others is a great example of bravery. Rosa Parks is an example of a hero because she was brave and did not say no when told to move her spot on a segregated bus (“Rosa Parks Biography”). It is what makes you a hero; it is what makes people feel safe. People count on the hero to be brave. Rosa Parks was not scared; she was selfless and heroic. qualities. Courage is a great thing to have to be a true hero. There were so many great people who had courage. Martin Luther King stood up for what he believed in and helped solve equal rights. “Not giving up until the goal is accomplished” (Schlenker). When one has courage, they never give up on what they believe in. A great example of a courageous person would be Jesus Christ. Jesus still followed his faith, beliefs, and tasks despite being hung on a cross, brutally beaten and attacked. In our everyday lives we can show courage. At school, kids can show courage by standing up for the kid that is being picked on. In the novel Ralph, Simon, and Jack all showed courage when they went to go explore the island. “Ralph, Jack, and Simon jumped off the platform and walked along the sand past the bathing pool” (Page 24). Another example of courage was when Ralph, Simon, Jack, and Jack’s hunters’ go and try to find the beast. “If the beast isn’t there we’ll go up to the mountain and look; and light the fire” (Page 103). Another quality it takes to be a hero is being a leader.
To be a leader, one has to show excellence. Heroes strive to improve themselves in every way possible. In the novel Ralph shows leadership when he blows the conch to get everyone together. “Let him be chief with the trumpet-thing” (Page 22). He had to be the leader since he was head over everyone. Ralph used leadership skills to take responsibility over everyone on the island, set rules, and keep everyone safe. The Naval officer asked “’Who’s boss here?’” “’I am’ said Ralph loudly” (Page 201). He showed leadership by taking the role of chief. “He is God in my eyes” (Sappho). What Sappho is saying is that in her eyes the hero is greater than what he is and that is what people think leaders are. “Doing what’s right regardless of personal consequences” (Schlenker). Leaders always do what right and always make the right
choice. In every true hero they have to be caring. The main difference between a hero and a villain is that the hero cares about saving people’s lives over their own. “the qualities of heroes involve “great nobility of purpose” and “sacrifice for others”(Schlenker). In the novel, Simon is the most caring because he looked out for the littluns when they needed food and shelter. “Simon found for them the fruit they could not reach, pulled off the choicest from up in the foliage, passed them back down to the endless, outstretch hands” (Page 56). Simon was the only one who cared about and took care of the littluns. “Willingness to risk personal safety to help others” (Schlenker). Simon, Piggy, and Ralph relate to this the most because they were the most caring out of everyone. Simon was kind to the littluns, and was a giver. Piggy used his intelligence to help everyone and was kind. Ralph was focused on getting off the island and saving everybody. “He is listens to intimately to the sweet murmur of your voice” (Sappho). What Sappho said relates to both the novel and the article because the hero is like Simon. The hero in the poem is one because the hero cares about her over himself. When one cares about another, they will do anything to satisfy and make the other person happy. The character in Sappho’s poem and Ralph are perfect examples of heroes because of their caring qualities. A hero is someone that is not corrupted by power and evil. They show integrity, bravery, courage, leadership, and caring qualities. Heroes can come in all shapes and sizes. They can be present day heroes, or heroes from history. We think that heroes are what others strive to be. Heroes can shape people because they make you want to be like them. Ralph, in the novel, shows a great deal of leadership and is an example of how people would to be a leader. Besides Ralph, Rosa Parks, Martin Luther King Jr., and Jesus Christ are just a few examples of people that possess heroic qualities.
Leadership is a trait that many people have naturally and others try to obtain. Many people consider themselves a good leader when they fail to carry out the characteristics leadership require. In the book, “Lord of the Flies”, Ralph is a better leader than Jack because of the traits he possesses. That is why certain skills are necessary to be considered a successful leader.
The main character is Ralph, a boy of "twelve years and a few months," is the first character the reader meets in the novel (Golding 10). The narrator is direct when describing Ralph's physical characteristics: "You could see now that he might make a boxer, as far as width and heaviness of shoulders went, but there was a mildness about his mouth and eyes that proclaimed no devil," (Golding 10). The narrator's first description of Ralph is his fair hair. Within direct characterization and straightforward statements, the narrator includes indirect comments on Ralph's nature. For example, the narrator implies that Ralph has a kind nature by saying his eyes and mouth bear no evil when talking about Ralph's build. Ralph is implied to be the largest and oldest boy on the island when the narrator notes, "The decrease in size, from Ralph down, was gradual," (Golding 59).
The Lord of the Flies by William Golding is a novel about human nature and the functions of society. One of the main characters in this novel is Ralph, who is chosen to be the leader of a group of boys. He assigns tasks to the boys and tries to keep them accountable for it. However, the boys begin to slack because they can no longer see the point of these tasks and rules. As a result of the constant slacking the boys soon turned into savages. Ralph’s struggle to maintain order amongst the boys shows how without rules it is human nature to descend into savagery due to the avoidance of authority.
In the famous novel named “Lord of the flies”, there are four main characters that William Golding built up to represent the typical personalities in human nature. While Jack stands for the powerfully instinct savagery, Simon represents the natural kindness and Piggy with his glasses is the symbol of wisdom, Ralph has the best conducts of a real leader as he was initially voted for chief. There are three main characteristics that mark him out as a felicitous leader: rational, moral and unflinching.
In literature, as in life, people struggle with the principles and beliefs they hold. In the novel, Lord of the Flies, by William Golding, Ralph represents order, civilization, and leadership. On the island, Ralph is conflicted with his principles and beliefs that he has acquired over the years of living in a civilized and humane world and is caught between holding on to them or submitting to the barbarism that seems to have taken over the other boys.
There is an unknown perfect science to being a leader. Some say that this is something you can attain over time with training or guidance, and others say it's a talent you must be born with. In Lord of the Flies by William Golding, one of the main characters Ralph, is elected the leader. The reason he is elected the leader isn't boldly laid out for the reader, but what is noticed, is that Ralph carries the true essence of a leader. Ralph can be seen as a great leader by the way he has everyone's best interest in mind, by the way he sets certain rules to maintain a civil society, and how he calls assemblies to address the issues that he has become most concerned with.
After the plane crashes and the boys find each other, they are scared and helpless. However, after establishing rule and living on the island for some, the boys transform into blood thirsty savages. Because Ralph found and blew into the conch, all surviving members of the plane crash are able to come to one place. The boys call for a vote and Ralph is elected leader. Then Jack, Ralph, and Simon go up to the mountain top to search for a way off. However, on the way back, they find a piglet but Jack can 't bring himself to kill it (Page 23). For this reason, the boys still remember what it’s like to be a civilized kid and this shows how innocence is still present inside the boys. Later, Jack tracks a pig through the forest, but it escapes. Afterwards,
What do all heroes have? Courage! The. Rosa Parks, Monuments Men, and the International Women of Courage are all the definitions of courage. Being courageous means having strength, bravery, and determination in your beliefs.
Lord of the Flies, a novel by William Golding, took place on an isolated tropical island. There were many symbolic items within the story, and their meanings changed as the story developed. The fire was the symbol of hope and civilization at the beginning of the novel, but at the end it had become a fire of destruction. Ralph, in the beginning of the book, stood for leadership and almost perfection, however as the story progresses, he was nothing more than a normal human. The beast, upon its first appearance, symbolized fear, but soon, it represented the savagery within them. The different symbolic figures within the book, such as the fire, Ralph, and the beast, shifted in meaning as the story develops.
My name is Piggy the first day I met Ralph I thought I was going to have a best friend. Come to find out he is the complete opposite of what I expected. The first thing he does is call me Piggy, a name that I got from being teased in school. Then I showed Ralph how to use the sea shell as a conch and he does not even say thank you. When Ralph finally got the hang of the conch he blew it so loud that all the birds flew into the air. Next thing we know tons and tons of children start to come out of the woods. Once we noticed that there were no more children coming, there needed to be order. Since I taught Ralph how to use the conch everyone thought he should be leader which he gladly accepted. After that we met a kid named Jack and his choir boy's. He was very mean to me and picked on me all the time. Jack and I might not become good friends but it looks like Ralph and him get along that's all that matters, that everyone can get along. I have to go now because some children are coming over I will try to write back as soon as I can bye.
In a group, there are always people who prove to have better leadership skills then others. The strongest of these people can often influence the weaker people into following them. However, the strongest person is not necessarily the best leader as it is proven in William Golding's book, The Lord of the Flies. Although Ralph is the weaker person, he is still able to show a better understanding of people than Jack who is stronger. Ralph demonstrates his excellent leadership skills throughout the book by keeping the group in line, treating everyone with respect, and staying focused on getting rescued.
A man who spent 20 years trying to get home. A father who took his own life for his family. A woman who risked her life to free strangers. True heroes give anything they can for the sake of other, something as small as a helping hand, or something as big as losing their own life. Heroes aren't bullies, they won't push you down just for their entertainment, they will pull you up back onto your feet. There are many types of heroes we all consider, Odysseus and Harriet Tubman are obvious while Rumpelstiltskin isn't as clear to see. Most of the time, heroes are not the stereotypical ones found in stories; real traits that define a hero are love towards one another, selflessness for others, and a strong devotion for what they believe in.
This essay is a character study of Ralph, who is one of the main characters in William Golding’s ‘Lord of the Flies’. I have chosen to analyse Ralph’s character, as it is the character with which I feel that I can relate most closely. Ralph is probably the novel’s main character. This essay will include my identification of the major aspects of Ralph’s character and how he symbolises different themes, which are portrayed in the novel. I will cover in this what Ralph contributes to the plot of the novel, a description of Ralph’s appearance, his dreams, his attitude to being stranded on the island, how he relates to the other boys and how he organises the boys into becoming a self-dependent society.
When I think of a hero I immediately think of someone who is strong, intelligent, handsome, and daring. Upon closer examination, many different qualities than these become apparent. Courage, honesty, bravery, selflessness, and the will to try are just a few of the overlooked qualities of a hero. The definition of heroism changes with the context and time. Heroes of the past are not necessarily heroes of present time and vise versa.
