Keys to being a Leader Leadership is a trait that many people have naturally and others try to obtain. Many people consider themselves a good leader when they fail to carry out the characteristics leadership require. In the book, “Lord of the Flies”, Ralph is a better leader than Jack because of the traits he possesses. That is why certain skills are necessary to be considered a successful leader. Taking Initiative The first step into being a successful leader is taking initiative. A good leader has to show they are in charge and are willing to take control of a group. In “Lord of the Flies”, Ralph takes initiative right from the beginning of the story. As Ralph and Piggy meet the other group of boys on the island, Ralph takes control by raising the conch which is the item he uses to get the boys to meet. He then says, “Seems …show more content…
to me we ought to have a chief to decide things”. Jack responds saying, “I ought to be chief”. Though Jack tries to challenge Ralph as leader, Ralph suggests they have a vote for chief. This shows initiative by him wanting to be in control of the group but also wanting to be voted in charge so it is done fairly. This characteristic shown by Ralph not only shows why he is a successful leader but why he is a better leader than Jack. Caring for Others The second step into being a successful leader is caring for the others. This meaning that the leaders care about the thoughts of other members of the group, and care for the safety and well-being of the members. This is an essential part of being a successful leader because the members of a team aren’t going to like their leader if the leader doesn’t care about what they think. In “Lord of the Flies”, Ralph is very caring towards the other members within his group. One specific member that Ralph stands up for amongst their group is Piggy. When Jack hits Piggy and breaks his glasses, Ralph stands up for him calling it “A dirty trick” (78). Ralph does this because he realizes Piggy is a weak link and Jack bullies him around. Ralph also shows sympathy for the feelings of the “littluns”. These are the youngest members of their tribe. The “littluns” have many fears while on the island and to help with the nightmares they have, Ralph assigns members of the group to build shelters for them. Though Ralph pays specific attention to piggy and the “littluns”, he cares about the well-being of everyone in his group and that is what makes him a successful leader. Having a Plan The third step into being a successful leader is having a plan, and a way to execute it.
In “Lord of the Flies” Ralph has the goal of getting himself and the rest of the tribe off the island. His plan to execute it is by making a signal fire that a passing ship or boat will see to rescue them. Ralph realizes that maintaining order within their tribe is crucial to their survival and chance of being saved. As chief of their group, he assigns Jack the leader of the hunters. He then puts them in charge of keeping the signal fire lit. During this process, Jack and his boys get distracted from keeping it lit as they attempt to kill a pig. After a couple of hunts, Jack and his boys finally kill a pig and return in cheers. As they get back, Ralph gets mad at Jack saying “You and your blood Jack Merridew! You and your hunting! We might have gone home” (70). Ralph is angry with Jack because he realizes as leader that he has to make sure everyone understands their main goal, and are able to focus on that by blocking out distractions. These actions that Ralph show display why he is successful as a leader and why they accomplish the goal of getting
saved. In conclusion, it takes certain characteristics to be a successful leader. Taking initiative, caring for others, and having a plan are all traits that Ralph possesses throughout “The Lord of the Flies” and is why he is an ideal example of a successful leader.
According to Peter Drucker, he claims, “Effective leadership is not about making speeches or being liked; leadership is defined by results not attributes.” Leadership is a commitment that is meant to be kept and done accurately. Leading a group or a society can lead to dreadful obstacles, but it’s your responsibility to have a solution to end. Ralph and Jack as a leader cause a majority of downhill for the boys. Affecting themselves and their surroundings to abruptly fall into pieces. Which lead to a mass destruction of the island, Lord of the Flies. The devastating events on this island lead to the massive chaos of Lord of the Flies, blaming Ralph and Jack for denial, lack of cooperation and inefficient leadership.
There are two different types of leaders: one who is loved by the people while acts responsibly and one who is feared by the people while being respected. These forms of leadership are shown throughout Lord of the Flies with Ralph and Jack. Niccolò Machiavelli uses The Prince to discuss how a leader should act and what leadership style is the most effective. Machiavelli clearly illustrates the types of leaders Ralph and Jack are by providing examples from ancient history.
We’re strong- we hunt! If there’s a beast, we’ll hunt it down! We’ll close in and beat and beat and beat- !’”(Golding 99). This passage states Jack’s need is to kill and this is the foundation of the rebellion against Ralph’s rules and respect. This states the desperation and the hate for Ralph and his position as the chief. This passion for hunting and killing, for Jack, was from the beginning of the novel Lord of the Flies since the time Jack wanted the duty as the hunter till the end of the novel when Ralph was being hunted. Mainly his fellow hunters appreciate this hunting skill from Jack and to get the littluns attention, he proceeds with his speech about hunting the beastie whom the littluns fear the most. Another advantage for Jack is the pig feasts, which many boys desire to have their dinner to fill their hunger thoughts. To bring the boys to his control, he extorted the boys saying in order to deserve a piece of meat they must listen to him only. Many boys already have interest on feasting upon the pigs again and they are addicted to meat. Lastly, the minor advantage for Jack is Ralph himself. Ralph is excessively forgiving and he realizes his mistake after he has no power over the group of
Leadership is something that stands out in people. In a group, people tend to look to the strongest person to follow. However, the strongest person may not be the best choice to follow. In Lord of the Flies by William Golding, Ralph and Jack each have leadership qualities. Jack is probably the stronger of the two; however, Ralph is a better leader. He has a better understanding for the boys. He also has more common sense and treats the boys better than Jack.
There is an unknown perfect science to being a leader. Some say that this is something you can attain over time with training or guidance, and others say it's a talent you must be born with. In Lord of the Flies by William Golding, one of the main characters Ralph, is elected the leader. The reason he is elected the leader isn't boldly laid out for the reader, but what is noticed, is that Ralph carries the true essence of a leader. Ralph can be seen as a great leader by the way he has everyone's best interest in mind, by the way he sets certain rules to maintain a civil society, and how he calls assemblies to address the issues that he has become most concerned with.
Although, Piggy and Jack have some leadership qualities, Ralph is the best leader. This is shown all throughout the novel, Lord of the Flies, by Williams Golding. Piggy is portrayed as the wisest of them all and understands priorities; however he lacks confidence from time to time. This makes him a good leader but not the best. Jack on the other hand, is egotistic but has his good qualities as well, such as knowledge and courage. This makes him a potential leader like Piggy, but not the best. Ralph however shows the most positive qualities of being a leader. He is optimistic, committed and knows his priorities, thus making him the best leader on the island. From the day we were born, we were governed by a set of rules that influenced our behaviour. Would the story have been different if civilization was maintained on the island?
Jack and Ralph both portray leadership skills; however, Jack pertains more useful skills. In Lord of the Flies by William Golding, Ralph (the protagonist) bares minimal skills pert...
In the novel, The Lord of the Flies, leadership is one of the main important qualities. If I had to choose between Jack and Ralph to follow in the story, I would choose Ralph. Although he ended up struggling near the end of the story, I still found him to be a good leader.
In William Golding's novel, Lord of the Flies Ralph though not the stronger person, demonstrates a better understanding of people than Jack which gives him better leadership qualities. Ralph displays these useful human qualities as a leader by working towards the betterment of the boys' society. He knows the boys need stability and order if they are to survive on the island. He creates rules and a simple form of government to achieve this order. Jack does not treat the boys with dignity as Ralph does. Ralph understands that the boys, particularly Piggy, have to be given respect and must be treated as equals. This makes Ralph a better leader as he is able to acknowledge that he was not superior to any of the other boys. Ralph's wisdom and ability to look to the future also make him a superior leader. Ralph has the sense to keep his focus on getting off the island. He insists on keeping the fire burning as a distress signal. Ralph's leadership provides peace and order to the island while Jack's leadership makes chaos.
Leadership In The Lord of the Flies “The challenge of leadership is to be strong, but not rude; be kind, but not weak; be bold, but not bully; be thoughtful, but not lazy; be humble, but not timid; be proud, but not arrogant; have humor, but not folly.” —Jim Rohn. Good leaders are classified by their morals, their qualities, and their actions, all of which interconnect. Characteristics of a good leader include honesty, commitment, intuition, confidence, the ability to delegate, and fearlessness. In the Lord of the Flies, the boys on the island needed a leader that could help them survive, stay strong, and ultimately lead them back to safety and civilization.
Many times in novels the elements of setting, mood and tone are used to extend beyond the words in a text and elaborate the reader’s mind into imagining the actual events taking place. In the classic novel, Lord of the Flies, William Golding utilizes the setting, mood and tone in great detail to reflect how the characters think, act and feel.
Leadership encourages hope within the doubtful group of kids headed by Ralph in the novel, Lord of the Flies. Ralph's leadership brings the boys together by giving them a common goal to survive. By giving the boys a common goal they respect one other and have a sense of togetherness to complete their goal to survive. Also their respect for each other brings peace and happiness for a little while on the island. Through Ralph's leadership, hope is obtainable for all those who live on the island.
Throughout the novel, Ralph has a strong understanding of himself. He knows that being chief comes with great responsibilities that as a leader he must fulfill. Ralph handles himself well through thick and thin as he sticks to goal of being rescued and having a fire constantly going. Ralph knows that they need a fire going at all times if they ever wanted to be rescued. In chapter 2, Jack takes some boys to go hunting against Ralph’s orders to make a signal. Despite the ignorance of Jack, Ralph does not show weakness as he says, “A fire! Make a fire!” (Golding 37). As a hero and a leader, Ralph must not show weakness to keep order. By staying to his orders of a fire, it shows to all the other boys that by doing as Jack did, it will not affect the way Ralph runs the island. The composure Ralph possesses is only one of the many qualities of leadership that is exhibited throughout Lord of the Flies.
In Lord of the Flies, Jack struggles to surrender to the orders of Ralph, the elected chief, and ridicules the other boys who do not possess his natural prowess for commanding the group. For example, when Ralph reprimands the hunters for not tending to the signal fire and ignoring their responsibilities, Jack angrily replies, “‘and you shut up! Who are you anyway? Sitting there telling people what to do. You can’t hunt, you can’t sing’” (Golding 123). Jack does not understand why Ralph was chosen over himself. Having always maintained the top position of the choirboys, he cannot accept ceding power to Ralph. Jack rationalizes his superiority over Ralph as being the boy who possesses singing and hunting abilities and a previous leadership role, therefore the rightful chief. Because Jack is obsessed with the thought that he deserves to rule, it never occurs to him that Ralph’s orders are logical, simple, and civ...
In a group, there are always people who prove to have better leadership skills then others. The strongest of these people can often influence the weaker people into following them. However, the strongest person is not necessarily the best leader as it is proven in William Golding's book, The Lord of the Flies. Although Ralph is the weaker person, he is still able to show a better understanding of people than Jack who is stronger. Ralph demonstrates his excellent leadership skills throughout the book by keeping the group in line, treating everyone with respect, and staying focused on getting rescued.
