Definition of Motivation The Little Oxford English Dictionary (2006), defines motivation as “the reason for your actions or behaviour”. Similarly, motivation is defined as “the reasons underlying behavior” (Guay et al., 2010, p. 712). In Gredler, Broussard and Garrison (2004), motivation is “the attribute that moves us to do or not to do something” (p. 106). This means that motivation is perceived as the drive to accomplish tasks or the very reason the tasks are not being done properly. It is basically what makes a person put or choose not to put in their effort when completing work. Motivation factors are what make the employees work harder, as they are the factors that will lead to job satisfaction. On the other hand, hygiene factors are what slow down the productivity of the employees, as they are the factors that will lead to job dissatisfaction. Generally, motivation factors are closely related to intrinsic motivation whereas hygiene factors are closely related to extrinsic motivation.

Motivation factors can be growth, achievement, recognition, the work itself, responsibility, and advancement. Growth and advancement are important for an employee because they would not want to stay in the same position, doing the same tasks for the rest of their lives. This is also because they want to be recognized for their efforts and time spent for the company's well-being. To an employee, being given responsibilities, means that they are trusted and tells them that they are important to and valued by the company. As for the work itself, this actually means that the employee hired should enjoy their job, have a strong passion and enthusiasm for what they do.
