ways In “The Prologue” of The Canterbury Tales, Chaucer uses the physical and social attributes of a person to show whether he admires or criticizes them.
Through the contemporary prologue I have created, I convey this theme of using satire to portray the characters I like and dislike. I convey this by creating characters similar to those in The Canterbury Tales. For example, Chaucer portrays the Franklin as someone who is wealthy and lives for pleasure The Franklin isn’t a noble but still has arrogance .Chaucer criticizes the Franklin by pointing out that “his bread, his ale were the finest of the fine”(lines 352). This shows that he was a very materialistic person and that he always got the best for himself. Similarly, “The Mean Girl” otherwise known as Lindsay Lohan was also wealthy before she became famous because of a company her grandfather created. She was also arrogant because of her fame; she believed she was above the law. Just like Chaucer I pointed out Lohan’s flaws and negative qualities showing that I dislike her. Another example, would be the Knight in the Prologue. He was a truthful, honorable, and humble person. Chaucer points out all the positive attributes of the Knight including that “he had done nobly in his sovereign’s war/ And ridden into battle, no man more” (lines 47-48). He mentions the Knight’s ability to fight and his bravery, emphasizing the positive aspects showing that he admires the Knight. Correspondingly, in my modern prologue “The Athlete” who
is David Beckham shows parallel characteristics. Beckham is described as being loyal, role model, and generous. I point out the positive aspects of Beckham including his handsome features demonstrates my admiration and respect I have for him.
In his work, Candide, Voltaire uses satire as a means of conveying his opinions about many aspects of European society in the eighteenth century. Voltaire successfully criticizes religion, the military, and the philosophy of optimism.
Caitlyn Jenner has plans to tell her story in a new memoir that she is working on. According to Koco, Jan. 19, 2016, Caitlyn just signed a book deal with Grand Central Publishing, which is scheduled to come out in the spring of 2017.
WHO IS THE BLAME? Good afternoon, my fellow audience. I am here today to persuade you on who I believe to be the character most responsible for the death of the two main characters in the play, Romeo and Juliet, a tragedy written by William Shakespeare. It is almost an ironic play because of its open and easily known ending, but yet its ending raises the controversial question, WHO IS TO BLAME FOR THE DEATH OF ROMEO AND JULIET? I believe every character in the book contributed to their deaths, even Romeo and Juliet themselves, but Friar Lawrence bears a monumental deal of the blame because he was the principle and most reliable adult that could have steered the ‘inexperienced’ couple, but his incompetency led Romeo and Juliet to a violent death.
-If you were in the same class I was in 2017 you may know why I named this like this. Also if you read The Things They Carried or know your vocabulary. Not just the name are familiar but the the whole story was about, WAR!!!. But this is much toxic and less world wide.
For instance, if you look at many of our current plays or even movies, you can see that most represent or have an underlying quality of satire. The Pardoner’s Prologue/Tale begins with a short introduction, hence the title “Prologue”. It is here that we learn of the reaction that the Host gives after hearing the Physician’s Tale previously. The Host seems to be so shocked at the death of the young Roman girl in the tale that he asks the Pardoner to tell the group a merrier, more farcical tale.
Satire is used in Pride and Prejudice by Jane Austen to show the deficiencies in morals and ethics of the characters that Austen disapproves of. Satire is used to "attack" characters and to bring about change. The different characters types she satirizes are "suck-ups," hierarchical, and/or ignorant.
There are two vastly differing works of literature that employ similar elements of satire, whether the story is long or short, essay or novella. In these two works, the authors bring light to ongoing social, political, and philosophical issues of their time and age. The two works I am referring to are Jonathan Swift’s satirical essay, A Modest Proposal, and Voltaire’s novella, Candide, or Optimism. In both A Modest Proposal and Candide, there is a portrayal of irony, cold logic and reasoning rather than emotion, and misguided philosophy. Exploring the issues within these texts can implement a better understanding of not only the literature itself, but also the historical context and the issues of the time. By delving even deeper into these works, one will begin to see the connection that can be made between these texts.
In the audience, Draculaura grabbed Clawd’s hand and squeezed it tightly. Clawd looked at her, whispering simply, “Remember what I said,” he nuzzled her reassuringly. “It’ll be okay.”
Well, a place where to live is essential for everybody. Today I am going to show you a less expensive, practical and ecofriendly solution for this basic but indispensable necessity.
As we go through life each of us have been hurt by the sarcastic comments of others. The words a person speaks to us become very important and the true massage they contain is what we being to analyze. Similar to sarcasm being used in speech, satire has been used by authors for centuries to carry an underlying message in the works they produce. Satire is defined as “the use of irony, sarcasm, ridicule, or the like, in exposing, denouncing, or deriding vice, folly, etc.” and is often used to disguise a real message. One shining example of satire in literature is Geoffrey Chaucer in his Canterbury Tales the General Prologue, The Pardoner’s Prologue and Tale, and The Wife of Bath’s Prologue and Tale. Chaucer uses his satire to call attention to the issues he sees in their society and the audience he chiefly addresses are those who are being fooled by their firm belief in the church and others with hypocritical intentions. In The General Prologue uses satire to describe the characters he will introduce, The Pardoner’s Prologue and Tale is his attack on the catholic church, and The Wife of Bath’s Prologue and Tale is his attack on the social pyramid especially where women are concerned. Each prologue or tale, Chaucer had cleverly designed with the use of satire to describe and ridicule issues he sees inside his own society.
Some of most lasting works of satire exemplify such a function, most specifically through the end-states of the protagonists. Orwell’s Nineteen Eighty-Four, Voltaire’s Candide, and Jonathan Swift’s Gulliver’s Travels all exemplify end-states of protagonists that emphasize conclusions to the moral and philosophical problems posed by the authors. Yet, each also exhibits a degree of ambiguity, which allows the audience to reflect on the criticism in conjunction with literary examination. All three of the aforementioned literary works are different in content and the degree of satire employed. However, by comparing the differences and similarities between protagonist end-states in each work, it becomes possible to better understand satire as a literary genre. Namely, the characteri...
Use of Satire in Canterbury Tales, Pride and Prejudice and The Rape of the Lock
For my “How to do” speech my goal was to share with the class an interesting and informative way to learn something new. Due to the speeches time limit, I knew I needed to be well prepared. I wanted to be less nervous before and during my speech. While presenting I was nervous, but I didn’t really have time for these feelings to sink in because I was focused on the information I wanted to share with the audience. I enjoyed presenting in the second group of speeches so I could see my peers different types of speaking style. The audience seemed alert and interested in my topic which made it a little bit easier for me to speak, because there weren’t any distractions in the room from people not paying attention. I think part of that was because
For instance, in Jonathan Swift’s A Modest Proposal he highlighted the poor conditions in Ireland. Additionally he talked about the English and Irish people’s poor approaches to the situation. Swift then mocked them all by suggesting that people sell and eat their children to fix the situation. A solution that would have been beneficial to both parties. Swift had many satirical pieces similar to A Modest Proposal, but none are as well known as his 1726 classic tale Gulliver’s Travels. In Swift voiced his opinions by describing the vices, of society through a man named Lemuel Gulliver. Gulliver, the main character, is often looked at as the first bit of mockery shown in the book. Specifically because Gulliver looks and sounds similar to gullible.
The police car stopped at the bottom of the driveway, in the back was a teenage girl, still too young to understand the world around her. Her mother slowly opened the door. A look of worry turned to anger. The girl watched as her mother marched out to greet the police officers. The officers talked and talked to the mother. The look of anger turned to compassion, tears. The girl didn't even move, she wasn't thinking about her mum, nor the two police officers, not even the fact that she was in the back of a police cruiser. The girl was having odd flashbacks to earlier, a shooter entered the gun store., killing several people, the girl was in the range with her brother. The shooter walked in, her brother dived on top of her, then his body went
