For my “How to do” speech my goal was to share with the class an interesting and informative way to learn something new. Due to the speeches time limit, I knew I needed to be well prepared. I wanted to be less nervous before and during my speech. While presenting I was nervous, but I didn’t really have time for these feelings to sink in because I was focused on the information I wanted to share with the audience. I enjoyed presenting in the second group of speeches so I could see my peers different types of speaking style. The audience seemed alert and interested in my topic which made it a little bit easier for me to speak, because there weren’t any distractions in the room from people not paying attention. I think part of that was because …show more content…
He also used humor to capture the audience 's attention which made even made the faculty laugh. I noticed while watching that it seemed that he would look down to his notes throughout the speech. One of my favorite quotes in his speech was “I hope you find the courage to decide for yourself what is right and what is wrong, and then please, expect as much of the world around you. Try to make the world good according to your standards.” Colbert seemed confident throughout his speech and gave encouragement to the audience in a very relaxed way. He gave strong eye contact throughout his speech and overall delivered a strong commencement speech.
In conclusion, I have learned a lot from studying the different ways to deliver a speech and how to capture an audience 's attention. I was personally encouraged by both speakers and found their delivery to be relaxed but powerful, and interesting throughout their entire speech. Both used humor to capture the audience 's attention which I find to be smart to get both the audience and speaker to become relaxed. I have taken away many tips by watching these speeches and now look forward to making
Colin Powell speech was what you call a classic. Basically, he came from nowhere to rescue the honor of Howard University. He speech began with him calling the Black Muslim speaker ignorant. I think that opening statement set the tone of the whole speech. He let people know from the start that he wasn't about to put Howard into anymore trouble. The other part of the speech of the speech was telling the Howard graduates to go out in the word and get good jobs. This part of the speech was on the ordinary note. All people will go through this part of the speech. In my speech, I had that informational part also. You need to inform people on what is going on. If you don't have the informational part of the speech then you...

In this case however under the circumstances that it was an award for humor there is leeway on how the speech could appropriately be delivered. He did a very good job at keeping the audiences attention throughout the whole speech even using aids such as his wife and other members in the crowd.
seemed to enjoy the speech. Homer Hickam mostly talked about his book Rocket Boys from
Great speakers have always been able to move their audiences with their speeches. In Animal Farm, Old Major gave an empowering speech to the animals of Manor Farm. Martin Luther King Jr also gave a very convincing speech about his dream for equality. Old Major in Animal Farm and Martin Luther King Jr both gave successful speeches that used repetition, emotion and rhetorical questions.
Her slow yet concise way of speaking, coupled with easy to follow transitions allowed for a speech that was enjoyable to listen to. Her use of examples from her personal life allowed her audience to get a picture of who she was if they did not know, and allowed her to better relate to them by provided examples of how she is related to the college they are graduating from. Her reference to many modern political problems allowed her to bring up her important role as an activist and facilitated further understanding from the audience. While some areas of her speech were weak, such as the longer than needed pauses and her lack of consistent eye contact, to a few points where she didn’t speak clearly enough, the overall picture that was her speech was fairly strong. Looking at this speech, I hope to incorporate some aspects that I failed to include in my previous speeches. Some of these include her use of hand gestures to emphasize and exaggerate certain phrases and topics, and her combined use of appeals. While my initial thoughts going in were “This is boring” and “This is too slow”, it evolved into me wanting to hear more, and overall my defeat in the beginning turned into a victory at the
The outside speaker that I saw took place on Monday November eleventh two thousand and thirteen, in the Saint Ignatius Science Center room one hundred and fifteen. The speaker of this presentation was Tom McDonnell elected CEO of the Ewing Marion Kauffman Foundation. Throughout McDonnell’s speech he talked about his experience attending Rockhurst University when it was an all boys school and his life after he graduated form Rockhurst and started his career. I thought that the speech was very well organized because I would assume that he made very good valid points, and when I say assume, I will elaborate on that more later on in my paper. It seemed that there was a clear introduction and body, but I was kind of surprised with the conclusion because he seemed to have just ended his speech. Or it might have been that his conclusion was so long that I just assumed to be part of the body.
However, there are some things that McRaven could have done better in his speech. First of all, he could have used hand gestures to help him convey his message better. Second, McRaven reads from a paper on the podium for about one-third of the time of the duration of his speech. For the rest of the time, he makes eye contact with the audience, which is essential to make a connection with the audience. Finally, McRaven should not have been licking his lips so often because it can be distracting for some people. Despite all of this, he delivers his speech clearly, which is what matters the
Being that he is a comedian Jon was very entertaining when giving his speech. Although, entertainment is much needed when sitting through a graduation ceremony, I felt as though he incorporated too much throughout his address. When starting his address, he cleared his throat a numerous amount of times. Not only that but, Jon also said thank you to his audience a lot of times as well and also used some provocative language. I get the point of him being a comedian, but when delivering a speech, such as that, he should have used language that was appropriate for the occasion. With his high confidence he was able to deliver his speech in high volume and with great clarity which made is speech effective. I did notice that when he would say “real world” (Stewart, 2004, 4:03), he would get tongue twisted, but the rest of his speech was articulated and pronounced
At beginning of the speech, he gave every on a piece of baseball vocabulary list and a piece of recreational quiz. He was wearing a baseball uniform. He asked a question about who like to play baseball to gained attention. And he led audience to preview the main points of the speech. He posted some funny pictures on power point.
During my demonstration speech, I was affected by my speech anxiety. Some of the viewable symptoms were the shaking of my hands and also the stuttering of speech. I was able to control myself and relax after I started getting into my information. I did use some of the suggested relaxation techniques to relieve my anxiety. Before I got up to speak I thought confident of myself to help give me courage and confidence.
I found that Winston's Churchill's speech was very effective. I feel his speech was so effective because he used all three aspects of rhetoric and because he kept his speech short with still including everything. Churchill involved things that were mandatory to tell his listeners and he added extras to make people believe him. Churchill began his speech using ethos. Churchill was a credible man, he was the Prime Minister of Great Britain at a rough point in everyone's lives. The people trusted him to end the Great depression and to end the ongoing war going all throughout Europe. The people of Britain found him trustworthy and listened to his words of wisdom. Next, Churchill used pathos. When Churchill begins to talk about the war and the
A speaker can be the reason for the successfulness of a speech. Even with attention-grabbing information a speaker’s delivery can destroy the audience’s reception of the information. Jeff Hancock uses humor to help carry his fascinating information
The speech I found most compelling was “On the Death of M.L.K”. I find this so because of the central idea found throughout the speech which is “ Even with a major death like M.L.K we must not hate but band together as a nation and love one another.”
I should receive a passing grade in this class because I can write now. Not just an exaggeration, but after another semester of English I finally feel confident that can write. Three of the reasons behind my confidence is I learned, I experienced and best of all I repeated. These three values helped prepare me for what is in store in English 1302 and here is why.
