Management practices are highly followed in today’s workplace and for good reason since evidence suggests successful companies follow these strict practices. Regulating employees through a program that is setup to promote success is what the five management practices are about. Discussed will be the management practices of planning, organizing, staffing, leading, and controlling and how they relate to the corporate environment of Comcast Corporation through my personal experience. Comcast Corporation is a company that specializes in cable networking and high speed internet access for residential and commercial customers. “Comcast Creates More Than 5,500 New Jobs as Part of Multi-Year Customer Experience Transformation” (Comcast.com, 2015). I spent a total of three years working for them in a call center atmosphere before relocating my family. This job was one of my most memorable and enjoyable mainly because they followed the management practices which allowed everyone to function efficiently. Nominally “The primary function for most call centers, also known as ‘inbound’ call centers, is to receive telephone calls initiated by customers. Inbound call centers typically spend 60–80% of their budget on staff members who handle phone calls” (der Horst, et al., 2012, 435). My days were spent with between eight to twelve hours a day attached to a desk and phone system monitoring all aspects of job performance. Comcast “today announced a new, multi-year plan to reinvent the customer experience and to create a culture focused on exceeding customers’ expectations, at all levels of the company. The plan centers on looking at every decision through a customer lens and making measureable changes and improvements across the company” ... ... middle of paper ... ...formance and consequently their job security. In summary the five management functions were used at my time with Comcast Corporation. Each function is crucial to the success of the organization, its employees and their relationship with management. By all means “the linkages between the five management functions make them inseparable activities. Successful managers understand the links and carefully follow through on every aspect of the management program” (Baack, et al., 8.2). Without the influences of the management practices I mentioned, Comcast Corporation would not be a successful organization and I would not have had the joy of furthering my career there. It is important to work for a company that believes in its employee’s success and job welfare while operating under the management practices of planning, organizing, staffing, leading, and controlling.

Managers think radically, abide by principles, rules and use experience in their respective fields to make things work. A good manager goes about the ordinary activities such a staffing, organizing, planning (Robert, 2007). The very ability of his/her colleague to discover the uniqueness in each of the subordinates, capitalize on it, harnessing the best out of them to accomplish goals clearly distinguishes such a person as great when compared to others. In today standards people look at Comcast they see the largest mass media and communication company in the world by revenue. Also people see it as a huge conglomerate because Comcast is the largest cable and home internet service in the United States of America while having the third largest home telephone service provider. This is why people fear Comcast because they are the ones who basically control the market in those three areas. Now looking at what Comcast has become people need to understand how this all started by first looking into the history. Then look into their five main subsidiaries and whether the company has a global presence. Next look at see what new big acquisitions the company has acquired. After looking at these reasons the conclusion can be made that synergy is of real concern through this company.
My career has been centered on technology starting at the age of 15 at CompUSA. I spent seven year in the organization until they were liquidated due to exceptionally poor financial management and a lack of brand unity. During this time I was heavily investing in school and other facets of life, so I only climbed a few levels to become a supervisor. Since the closure, I have been with Comcast building my career as a leader in this organization. I have held numerous positions in my seven years with Comcast, most recently promoted to Operations Manager in a new organization called the Billing Center of Excellence in January of 2013. My two peers and I operate a 360 seat contact center in St. Paul which handles roughly 13,000 customer relationships
A management philosophy helps an individual to know the direction and the steps to follow when in a position of management. The various concepts of management have been very helpful, and they have had an impact on my personal management philosophy. Planning is an action that involves thinking about a project and organizing them in a manner that is likely to lead to the desired goal (Dumas, 2013). There are four different functions of management. In this paper, I will define these functions; planning, organizing, leading and controlling. I will also explain how each of these functions relates to my own organization.
