The Characteristics Towards Success As former President of India, Abdul Kalam, once stated, "My message, especially to young people is to have courage to think differently, courage to invent, to travel the unexplored path, courage to discover the impossible and to conquer the problems and succeed." In its essence, Abdul Kalam clearly exemplifies one of the principle aspects of the IB [International Bachelorette] Learner Profile. Centering around both the fundamental values of ethical behavior and the attributes of a successful member of society, the ten traits found in the Learner Profile serve as an ideal means of instituting a foundation for the people of tomorrow. Fixated on implementing the development for the betterment of a person as an individual and as a part of a global community, the following characteristics are portrayed in the Learner Profile: inquirers, knowledgeable, thinkers, communicators, principled, open-minded, caring, risk-takers, balanced, and reflective. As an individual, I have been gifted with countless blessings including intellect, love, understanding, wisdom, the ability to think, and various others (including the traits found in the Learner Profile). However, circumstances arise where the use of balance is vital; yet, it is not taken into consideration and failed to be acted upon. An evaluation of the use and importance of being a thinker, to that of the significance in maintaining balance, will demonstrate the reasons for which each feature is desired and equally paramount. Everyday, people are consistently moving and adjusting to satisfy popular demands that come with economical changes. In return, I seek nothing other to be a leader and guide to others who are in need. Altogether, it is crucial to be able to think and explore the endless possibilities; however, it is imperative to be able to balance one's time. The IB Learner Profile clearly demonstrates the upmost characteristics that are to be found in a successful person. With these traits, comes an array of endless opportunities for development, advances, and success. I for one, hope to clearly continue to develop and exemplify my gifts to help others. Following and obtaining these skill sets will make one a greater individual and a member of society as a whole. It all starts with with one person to make a difference... and then follows a new society.

Kelley describes working all night long as a “pitiful privilege” in lines 44 and 45. In addition to yielding such a sarcastic tone, this rhetoric device also shows how pitiful it is that children see their 14th birthday not as a happy milestone that is normally expected, but as an opportunity, like Kelley said, a privilege to start working. This pushes her audience to consider that though this may indeed be a beneficial privilege to some, it is a great injustice in the eyes of another. This injustice is later reiterated by the comparing child labor to “great evil” when she states no one will be able to free their consciences from participation in such injustices until women are given the right to vote. Not only does this intensify the leading purpose of her speech, but further motivates her audience to take action in fighting for her cause.
Using pathos, Kelley makes a strong appeal to the reader’s conscience. She urges her audience to identify with the victims that suffer from the lack of labor laws. Her speech affects one on a personal level with the statement, “Tonight while we sleep, several thousand little girls will be working in textile mills, all the night through, in the deafening noise of the spindles and the looms spinning and weaving cotton and wool, silks and ribbons for us to buy.” The use of personal pronouns creates a more intense a more intense reaction in the reader. In many lives, change is constantly happening. The economics, cultural values, and social ideals are different today from many years ago. For example, men many years ago rely on literature, libraries, and endless hours of searching for sources in order to make speeches and write stories, and they also had different modes of transportations such as trains. On the other hand, in today’s society, it is easier to find sources and to do research because of the advanced technology, and it is also unchallenging to travel due to the innovations of cars and airplanes. Whether being said or being written, there is always a purpose behind the way words are utilized. Words, oftentimes, educate, inform, or even deceive the minds of individuals, but the true power they derive from has brought about the contribution of others resulting in effective outcomes. Although words hold many different purposes, its key motive is evident when used to sway an individual’s position in public controversial matters. The influence that writing and speech can induce, based on the use of words through diction, tone, and pathos, is what creates change in individual’s perspectives on social views.
Kelley uses an anaphora to illustrate the harsh working conditions the laborers deal with. “The children make our shoes…robbed them” (lines 66-77). By description of children having to experience dreadful working all night, and how her audience is allowed to sleep, she creates a feeling of guilt for the children that are forced to work. The anaphora narrates the struggle that the children were experiencing. Right after she uses the anaphora , Kelley explains that the burden of factory work has robbed the children of their school life, using sympathy and guilt to establish that children are suffering in order to persuade Americans to vote for the purpose of modifying laws. Lines 18-22, Kelley emphasizes this, “Tonight while we sleep, several thousand little girls will be working in textile mills, all through the night…..ribbons for us to buy.” she also hints that the lack of sleep young worker receive has a high possibility of causing developmental problems that will affect them for the remainder of their lives. Kelley asks if mothers and teachers voting would make a difference (lines 55-59), she asks this because she implies that their votes can make the intense child labor come to a permanent halt. The education system has been a controversial issue among educators. Requirements of school do not let students choose what they want to study for their future. It’s a big issue to force students to study specific curriculums, which don’t help them improve, and what they like to create. Educators choose a general system of education for all students based on general knowledge. Intelligent or genius students have to be in that system of education, which doesn’t let them improve their creativity.
Beauty is not in the face; beauty is a light in the heart. For my speech reflection I chose to watch a video by Lizzie Velasquez. Lizzie Velasquez spoke about her experience with stumbling along a video on youtube that claimed she was the ugliest person alive, at just eleven years old. Velasquez gave an excellent speech that gave the listener heart-felt emotion, that connected herself with the listener on a personal level, and was intriging to listen to.

Children were put in harsh working conditions that endangered their safety and health. Although, it took a while adults were able to realize that children should not be working in factories.
