The M16
With its light weight of less than six pounds and its powerful
ammunition, small 5.56mm circumference, short 38.80 inch
long body, a whipping 3,250 feet per second muzzle velocity,
and a maximum efficiency range of 460 meters the M16 is the
most versatile standard issue rifle of any army. You may think
that the brains of the government's army may have devised the
plan to make the M16, but it was none other than the brains of
John Hopkins University where the development of the M16 first
began in September of the year of 1948.1
The ability of being selective firing was the main point of
interest for the army. Also another high point is that the
ammunition must be able to pierce a steel helmet from 500
meters away.2
The military appointed Mister Eugene Stoner to design
the rifle since he was a soldier but had been decommissioned
after the war. The gun that was more or less being improved
was the heavy, high caliber, selective fire capable, M14. Its
benefits are that it can penetrate a steel helmet at a greater
range. Some disadvantages of the .308 caliber M14 Also Known
As the NATO are that when the gun is shot only the first two or
three shots will hit the target that has been aimed at. This
happens because of the kick or the amount of space the gun
moves when fired this can also be called recoil. In a bullet that
has .308 caliber for the NATO the recoil is a lot. Also since the
ammunition itself is large this means that it weighs a lot. This
also means that a soldier can only carry a little bit of
ammunition into a battle. Maneuvering the weapon was also a
difficulty, due to the weight and size but in spite of the fact of
the M14's disadvantages, the M14 was very reliable...

During the shootout the police went to a nearby gun store
to get as much ammunition as they could when they could.
After all was said and done the robbers sadly were killed.
In the month of September of 1997 the California governor said
that he had bought 600 M16 rifles for the police department.
Hopefully this day will not be repeated.10
Dessert Storm was the first time the M16 proved its
excellency. A new gun may be in order for the army.11 The
military is debating on whether or not they will adopt the M4A1
as standard issue for the Unites States. It is like the M16 but
has an adjustable buttstock, two types of ammunition, and a
grenade launcher that can be shot simultaneously with either of
the types of ammunition. the M4A1 is not a new gun but only a
modification of the unchallenged M16.12

One weapon used in the Civil War is a Sharps Carbine. It was developed primarily for Calvary, because of the shorter barrel. They were much easier to handle on horse back than their longer brother the Breech-Loader. Sharps were preferred because they could be loaded on a moving horse, something virtually impossible with a Muzzle-Loader. Also, Breech-Loaders carbine which fired moisture proof metallic cartridges, where more reliable than rifles that fired paper cartridges. As I said be fore it is easier to load a Sharps than a Muzzle-Loader. A Muzzle-Loader took 9 long hard steps just to fire one shot. Even the most skilled solder could only get three rounds off in a minute on the old Civil War Muzzle-Loader. And No wonder. After each shot you have to (1) steady the gun on the ground take out a new cartridge out of a belt pouch. (2) Tear open a piece of paper with your teeth. (3) Empty the powder in the barrel and insert a bullet in to the muzzle. (4) Draw the long “rummer” out of its carrying groove under the barrel. (5) ram the bullet all the way down. (6) Return the rod back to its groove. (7) Lift the weapon half-cocked the hammer. (8) Fully cock the hammer, aim, and finally,(9) fire.
Ever since The Revolutionary War, The American Colonies against the The United Kingdom, people have changed the way they've fought. Using strategic plans of fighting and going against many rules of war. In the book The Rifle John Byam ,a character in book, fights in The Revolutionary War and uses his rifle that he had bought. John used and different way of fighting then the British, traditional way. This essay will cover why and what are the rules of war, old styles of fight wars (primarily the British way) and how new styles of fighting fighting in war started in the American Revolution to today and how John Byam, from The Rifle, used new ways of fighting and how his gun was perfect for him.
The amount of ammunition that is allowed by law to be loaded into a firearm criminalize many popular handguns, even those used by the military like the Beretta m9 9mm, which is the standard issue side arm of the United States military that has an ammo capacity of a whopping 15 bullets. 16 bullets if one is locked in the chamber. According to this new law only seven are allowed to be loaded at any given time except when in a competition on a range.
As a result of increased use of heavy weapons around the city of Sarajevo, NATO aircraft bombed several Serbian weapons caches. The May 26, 1995 strike was aimed at reducing the ammunition available to attack the city.3 Intelligence satellites noted large amounts of secondary explosions that verified the targets were indeed weapons caches. This destruction of resources angered the Serbians, who retaliated by taking over 370 NATO...
...waste ammunition.” During the war colonel Hiram Berdan formed a regiment of sharpshooter for the union army called Berdans sharpshooters. These new soldiers would be better shooters against their enemy and would be save great amounts of ammunition and money. Contests were held across the country to find these elite sharpshooters. To make the cut you had put 10 consecutive shots into a target at two hundred yards. Each shot couldn’t be more than to inches from the center of the bull’s eye. At the end of these contests 1,000 winners were enlisted in the 1st United States sharper shooters. The next generation of breechloaders called magazine rifles would prove ever more deadly to confederate opponents. “Guns such as Spencer and Henry repeating rifles were deigned to carry preloaded magazine of seven to fifteen bullets which could be inserted into the rear of the gun.”3
The United States Army, in its current state, is a profession of arms. In order to be considered a profession, the organization must have an ethical code rooted in values, strong trust with its clients, and be comprised of experts within the trade. These experts are constantly developing the trade for the present and the future and hold the same shared view of their trade culture.
Every war, though happens for a reason and bring a better change, is often gruesome. The Civil War broke America in two groups and, at the time, was the war with the most casualties and injured men. As the fight to preserve the Union progressed, so did a number of other areas, such as weaponry and artillery. The advanced technology produced through the Civil War assisted in increasing number of casualties. The North was more fortuitous than the South in multitudinous ways. One of which includes the fact that their industrial society allowed them to produce a larger amount of weapons of a higher quality. One of the major reasons the Union triumphantly defeated the Confederate army was because of their more superior types of weapons.
...me soldiers refuse to fire a shot due to the great personal conflict within them to kill another human being. Normal human beings cannot kill in cold blood. Normal human beings usually can’t even think about killing somebody. To not feel remorse after killing a fellow human being would be inhuman.
1. Often, it is concluded that a lone gunman couldn’t have made the shots in the short seconds of the shooting (Rubinstein 4).
It was May 8th, 1864 at an area in central Virginia, to later be known as the Battle of Spotsylvania. Major General John Sedgwick, commander of the Sixth Army Corps of the Union Army, was with his troops as they probed the Confederate skirmish lines. This act was to determine where to place defensive forces. Maj. Gen. Sedgwick stood with his troops as Brevet Major General Martin T. McMahon gave the order for the troops to move right. As the men rose to execute the order, bullets whistled over head causing some of the men to duck. Maj. Gen. Sedgwick laughed and jokingly said " What! what! men, dodging this way for single bullets! What will you do when they open fire along the whole line? I am ashamed of you. They couldn't hit an elephant at this distance." He repeated the phrase “They couldn't hit an elephant at this distance”. Moments later Maj. Gen. Sedgwick was struck below the left eye by a bullet from a Rebel sharpshooter, mortally wounding him. (McMahon)
The rifle was an extremely effective advancement in military history. The rifle has been used for centuries because of its effectiveness, shooting bullets straight and accurate because of the aerodynamics and physics of the spiral motion with the bullet. What makes the rifle a rifle and much better than a musket, is the fact that it has rifling throughout the barrel of the gun. Rifling is a system of spiral grooves in the surface of the bore of a gun causing a projectile when fired to rotate about its longer axis (Merriam-Webster). The rifle changed America by starting long range warfare, enforcing a new industry of American weaponry, and leading to the sniper rifle which now has many important uses such as protecting the white house.
The Epic of Gilgamesh and Fight Club (a novel by Chuck Palhaniuk) show mentally unstable main characters with very strong, animalistic second halves to them. The psychic apparatus consists of the more animalistic part of the conscious (the id), the organized moderator of desires (the ego), and the part of the conscious that aims for perfection (the superego). Tyler Durden is the Narrator’s id whereas the Narrator himself is his ego and superego. It is known that Tyler is the Narrator’s subconscious creation to store his id. The Epic of Gilgamesh is also about the id, ego, and superego of the main character. Enkidu represents the id of Gilgamesh while Gilgamesh himself represents his ego and superego. Both Enkidu and Tyler Durden are physical presences in each story, but they are really the psychosomatic manifestations of Gilgamesh and the Narrator meant to contain Gilgamesh’s and the Narrator’s animalistic ids separately from the rest of their minds..
