M252 81mm Mortar
INTRODUCTION: Good morning, my name is your name and my period of instruction is on the M252 81mm Mortar. We will cover some basic mortar knowledge including nomenclatures, rates of fire, and weight. We will also cover the mission of an 81mm mortar platoon and how that platoon is configured. The purpose of this period of instruction is to provide you with basic information and working knowledge of the 81mm mortar.
LEARNING OBJECTIVES:

a. State the three main components of the mortar and their nomenclature.
b. State the weights of the three main components of the mortar.
c. State the maximum range of an 81mm mortar.

TRANSITION: Now if there are no questions for me let’s get into the nuts and bolts of this period of instruction.
BODY:
MISSION: The 81mm mortar platoon is commonly called the battalion commander’s hip pocket artillery. It is called this because 81’s are foot mobile, are on target faster, and more accurate than artillery. The mission of the 81mm mortar platoon is to provide continuous indirect fire support to the infantry battalion and it’s subordinate elements in the offense and defense.
CHARACTERISTICS: The M252 81mm mortar is a smooth bore, muzzle loaded, high angle of fire weapon. Smooth bore meaning it has no lands and grooves like a rifle barrel. Muzzle loaded, because you insert a round into the muzzle of the cannon, allowing gravity to pull the round down, striking the firing pin. High angle of fire because it is capable of firing from within defilade, over hills, and other obstructions.
COMPONENTS: The M252 81mm mortar consists of three main components, and a dovetail slot sight. They are:
M253 Cannon (barrel): The M253 cannon consists of the barrel, sealed at the lower end with a removable breech plug that houses a removable firing pin. At the muzzle end is a cone-shaped Blast Attenuator Device (BAD) that is fitted to reduce noise.
M177 Mount (bipod): The M177 mount is composed of 3 main assemblies. They are: the leg assembly, the traversing gear assembly, and the barrel clamp assembly.

The Third System was the name applied to a string of coastal forts from the Florida Keys to Maine intended to defend the shores of the United States against hostile invaders (Our Georgia History). The parameter was built as a defensive response to the English attack on D.C. and Baltimore and Maryland at the time of the War of 1812. During 1861, Major Olmstead gained command of Fort Pulaski. His goal was to build two lines of defense on the outer coastal area of Georgia. Under his control, he established a series of batteries and forts along the parameter of the island. During 1861 and the first six weeks of 1862, thousands of pounds of gunpowder and ammunition were brought to the fort (Schiller). In addition, Olmstead was able to boost his artillery complement to 48 guns, including 12-inch mortars, two English Blakely rifles, and 10-inch columbiads (Schiller). The development of the rifle gun helped improve the defense of the fort. When General Lee made his rounds to Fort Pulaski, he insisted that Olmstead continue to build his inner coastal defenses in preparation of an attack from the federal forces. Olmstead took his advice and built sandbags around the barbette guns, to protect the gunners from fragmentation. He orders his army to dig ditches around the fields, to help trap rolling shells. Two months preparing for the attack from the Federal army has finally come. Colonel Olmstead took thirty minutes to position his men, he made sure the guns were manned and he issued ammunition.

The argument about if college is worth it or not has been one of the biggest arguments throughout the media for decades. Students suffer a lot from the debts that they get from college and also the amount of studying that they do in college and when they graduate they ask themselves “is graduation from college really worth all the money that we paid and all the work that we have done?”
In Chaucer's The Canterbury Tales, the Wife of Bath (Alison) teaches her audience what it is women most desire through her tale. The tale she tells resembles the tale of Dame Ragnell. These stories are analogies, perhaps both arising from a similar folk-tale source. Both stories are set in the magical Arthurian times when the fields and forests teemed with gnomes and unearthly creatures. Although both stories have the same moral and end on similar note, there are some vivid differences that we simply cannot overlook.
In medieval England, society’s roles were dominated by men and women were either kept at home or doing labor work. Among the most famous medieval English literature, “The Canterbury Tales” by Geoffrey Chaucer, lies ‘The Wife of Bath's Prologue’ and ‘The Wife of Bath's Tale.’ Within, Chaucer shares his perspective of the Wife of Bath, the Queen, and the Crone. Through the use of symbolism and diction, Chaucer aims to change society’s expectations of women.
She was the daughter of King Aeetes and the former wife of Jason, until he decided to abandon his family and duties as the head of the household by marrying Glauce, the Princess of Corinth. In the beginning, when Medea and Jason ran away to Corinth, she tried to play the part of the good wife and conform to the ancient Greek societal values regarding gender roles. As a woman, her purpose in society was to get married, have children, and raise them. Medea tried to comply and obey those norms that had been long engrained in society. However, due to Jason’s betrayal and the renouncement of her and their children, the catalyst for full-fledged murder arose and unraveled the stagnant and deeply inbred issue of gender inequality, especially in terms of marriage. Medea even said, “For separations bring disgrace on the woman and it is not possible to renounce one 's husband” (42). While getting divorced was an easy procedure for men, it was extremely difficult for women to accomplish separation successfully from their husband. Men were not only able to freely and easily divorce their wife without any issues, but also did not experience any reparations for their actions. Whereas,
“Volley Guns” (Chivers, 2010, p.26) or also known as “Organ Guns” (Ellis, 1975, p.10) were first attempts at increasing firepower by adding several barrels at the firing itself, rather than simply attempting to increase the rate of fire. “Gunsmiths had long ago learned to place barrels side by side on frames to create firearms capable of discharging projectiles in rapid succession. These unwieldy devices, or volley guns, were capable in theory of blasting a hole in a line of advancing soldiers” (Chivers, 2010, p.26). An example of such weapons can be seen on July 28, 1835 when Giuseppe Fieshi unleashed terror on King Louis-Phillipe in Paris, France. He fired his 25 barrel “volley gun”, killing 18 of the king's entourage and grazing the King's skull. The weapon was ineffective however. Four of the barrels failed and another four ruptured. Two other barrels had exploded inside, grievously wounding Giuseppe. (Chivers, 2010, p. 27)
It seems that the ultimate function of a high school student is to get their diploma and then go straight into the workforce. The mindset behind this has people questioning “Is a College worth it?”In today’s society a college education is vital to live a sustainable life in America. Many people would subject to that statement, but yet they’re stuck at a low paying job living from paycheck to paycheck struggling to support their family. Although most people have argued that a college education is meaningless but with closer examination shows that a college education is the key to opening the door to success.
Geoffrey Chaucer used his characters in Canterbury Tales as a way to illustrate stereotype of medieval society. The Wife of Bath, one of the pilgrims in Canterbury Tales demonstrates an authoritative role in marriage The Wife of Bath’s unusual behavior and attitudes can be interpreted by two motives: feminist ideals or sexual indulgence. When considering feminist viewpoints, it can be concluded that the Wife of Bath’s behavior is motivated by sexual indulgence.
In a society, there are many different opinions on how a women figure is seen. These ideas have changed overtime with the progress of women bring consider equal to men. There are two ways a woman can be interpreted, one brings lower to the men and the other being equal to men. Women play an important role in shaping lives, directly or indirectly. The tales depicted in this book shows the reader the broader insight of how women were seen as in previous years. The different ideas of what women meant to men are seen in the tales told by the characters in the book, mostly the men. The perspective of a woman for a male and a female is different. If we were to compare two tales from each side, the opinion would only be in favour for the individual who is narrating the tale.
