Have you ever seen the BBC series “Sherlock”? What about “Tinker Tailor Soldier”, or “Hawking”? One man appearing in all of those programs has become very well known over the course of the past few years. Even today, he acts in many series and movies. His name is Benedict Cumberbatch, and his tale is an interesting and humbling one.
Benedict Cumberbatch was born on July 19 in 1976. Benedict was never a very well-behaved child. His parents had sent him to Harrow, one of the most prestigious and expensive boarding schools in Britain, Brambletye School, Manchester Unversity, and the London Academy of Music and Dramatic art. While at Harrow, he misbehaved so much that his headmistress reported to his parents with the words “Ben is slightly more controlled but must try to be less noisy” (McCaffrey).Cumberbatch got into fights and even pushed a girl off a stage he was performing on because she was being too self-indulgent. His parents were both working actors and always tried to do everything they could for him, including working hard to give him the opportunity to choose what he wanted to be when he grew up. Originally, Benedict Cumberbatch was not on the path to becoming a star. He was on the path to becoming a lawyer- with acting as an alternative. He explained his thoughts in a NPR interview: “I just encountered loads of other people on the same course who said it's so much down to chance and luck. And I thought, 'Well, why am I giving up on my primary dream to work doubly hard to do something as an alternative to what I really still want to do?’ ” (Cumberbatch). Benedict’s acting career took a turn in the right direction “when he played the role of Antonio Salieri in a university production of Peter Shaffer's Amadeus” (Cumberbatch)...

Throughout my short life span I have been blessed with the opportunity to work for one of the most driven farming establishments in Kansas. The person leading the way? Brian Vulgamore. Brian has been in my life since I was a toddler. I personally believe without Brian in my life, I would not have the opportunity to attend college and pursue my dreams. A man of many attributes, he [Brian] has inspired me to seek the very best in life, and always strive for the greatest opportunities.

On August 25, 1958, Timothy Walter Burton was born (“Biography”). Burton had a painful childhood in which the relationship with his parents and brother was nonexistent (Morgenstern). Through his intense feeling of isolation, his visual talent began to develop. The comfort found in hobbies such as writing and drawing led him to attend the California Institute of the Arts which led him to his first job in any artistic field at the Disney Animation Studios (“Biography”). Burton has since been referred to as one of the most visually gifted writers, artists, and filmmakers that America has seen (Hanke). His short stories, poems, and film scripts are centered on an inner darkness which he has been slowly acquiring since his childhood. He throws himself into everything he writes and makes even the simplest characters have a deep, complex meaning. His famous darkness and symbolism is shown in his book The Melancholy Death of Oyster Boy and Other Stories. The book contains a collection of his short stories, poems, and illustrations about a variety of fictional characters that can be compared to Burton and his life. Tim Burton’s home life and previous hardships have made a significant impact on his work. In my paper, I will draw parallels to his life and work as well as prove that there is reasoning and beauty in the way he is.

“The world is full of obvious things which nobody by any chance ever observes,” states Sherlock Holmes (Doyle, The Hound of the Baskervilles loc 1238). According to TV Tropes, mystery is a genre of fiction where the plot revolves a mysterious happening that acts as the driving question. With any given problem there is a solution; however, and the question is “how does one come about to that solution”? Extremely high intelligence level, keen observation, creative imagination and sensitivity to details are just some of the qualities that Holmes possesses. In the process of solving mysteries, there is always a borderline between mere guessing, a coincidence, and a scientific approach that Holmes calls deductive reasoning. In Sir Arthur Conan Doyle's 1902 novel, The Hound of the Baskervilles, Dr. Mortimer seeks advice from Holmes as he explains the curse that has been plaguing the Baskerville family. With the power of deduction, Holmes realizes that Mr. Stapleton is actually a Baskerville descendant and has been planning to get rid of the other members of the family to claim the family fortune. Conan Doyle tells the reader what their mind is capable of doing by incorporating Holmes through his novels as he uses observation, deduction and knowledge in solving his cases. One important key that makes him different from most people is that he sees everything that people often neglect to pay attention to. A remarkable proof which shows that Holmes holds an extraordinary analytical mind and is uniquely capable of solving a mystery through his great sensitivity to minute details and the ability to draw connections from it was shown as he observes and deduces information from the letter received by Sir Henry Baskerville the moment he arrived...
