No one betrays someone or something without a reason and this is the same with Benedict Arnold. Benedict Arnold was born on January 14, 1741 in Norwich, Connecticut to Benedict Arnold III and Hannah Waterman King Arnold. His father married Hannah, a wealthy widow in November 1733. He was one of only two of his mother’s eleven children to survive. Hannah’s late husband, Absalom King, was a well-to-do merchant. Benedict
They gave the command to General Schuyler, once again Arnold felt slighted. But General Washington knew Arnold to be a genius soldier. He selected Arnold to lead troops through a wilderness route for the second part of the Quebec campaign. This mission was delayed from the start by terrain and weather, but Arnold got most of his troops through. Unfortunately, in their delay the city had been reinforced. He could not wait had had to attack on December 31, 1775 , since many of his men’s enlistments expired on New Year’s day. Although, Arnold suffered a severe leg wound in battle , he never gave up his post. The Americans fought on and were forced to retreat. It was a crushing
In the spring of 1778 Washington appointed Arnold the commander of the city of Philadelphia. While in this post Arnold met Peggy Shippen, who was the daughter of a loyalist sympathizer. Peggy and Arnold married on April 8,1779. This marriage greatly improved his social status, however, he did not have the money to finance the lifestyle to go along with it. He lived beyond his means and the Continental Congress brought charges against him that resulted in a court martial in May of 1779. This action further frustrated and angered the already bitter
The Culper Spies were instrumental in providing Washington with excellent intelligence; yet the most important piece of information may have been the discovery of Benedict Arnold’s plot to give West Point to the British. Unfortunately, it is uncertain whether the spy ring actually played a significant part in the capture of Arnold’s co-conspirator, John Andre, and thus saving West Point from the British. This uncertainty is either due to a lack of ...
The Notorious Benedict Arnold is classified as non-fiction historical genre. The story of Benedict Arnold, especially, is full of adventure and suspense. For those who have previous knowledge of Arnold’s story may not have felt the suspense as much as one who has no knowledge of his military career. Steve Sheikin tells of the heroism of both Benedict and Andre. Even though Andre was entirely for the British, he risked his life for his country. The story of Benedict Arnold is often associated with treason, this book is no different.
At the beginning of the Philadelphia Campaign, General Washington was not sure of General Howe’s plan. That changed when General Howe ...
The argument over Arnold’s place in American history has carried into this century. All the Americans relate George Washington, Alexander Hamilton, and Thomas Jefferson as their heroes, but there is a debate whether Benedict Arnold was a victim or a traitor. Arnold was a general during the American Revolutinary War, and he fought for the Continental Army. His name became synonymous with the word traitor. Benedict Arnold was a Revolutionary Hero that had a huge effect on succeeding in the war. He had motivated a lot of soldiers during the war with his victorious discourses, and battles. Determination could be one of the most important reasons why the Patriots won the war, and had a chance to create their own country. These days, kids are in school are familiar with Benedict Arnold as a hero, but the Congress at that time did not deliberate him as a hero. In fact, the facts are proving that Arnold looked like a traitor, but he was actually a victim of circumstances because he was not respected as much as the other generals, he had fought for the Continental Army, and lastly he had never thought of betraying to his country.
During the War for American Independence, 78 men were commissioned as general officers into the Continental Army by the Continental Congress. Many of these generals commanded troops with differing levels of competence and success. George Washington is typically seen as most important general, however throughout the war a number of his subordinates were able to distinguish themselves amongst their peers. One such general was Nathanael Greene. At the end of the Revolutionary War, Greene would become Washington’s most important subordinate, as demonstrated by Edward Lengel’s assessment of Greene as “the youngest and most capable of Washington’s generals.” Washington and Greene developed a strong, positive and close relationship between themselves. Greene began his life in the military after having been raised a Quaker. With limited access to literature and knowledge in his younger years, Greene became an avid reader which equipped him with the knowledge necessary to excel as a general during the war. Through his devoted study of military operations, firsthand experience and natural abilities as a soldier, Greene became an excellent military commander. He would become known for his successful southern campaign, during which, he loosened British control of the South and helped lead the war to its climax at Yorktown. Throughout the war, he was involved in a number high profile battles where he built a reputation of being an elite strategist who also understood unconventional warfare, logistics, and the importance of military-civil affairs and had a natural political/social acumen. The thesis of this paper is that Greene’s proven reputation of being a soldier, strategist and statesman would cause him to become the second greates...
Washington understood that what lies ahead would be difficult, considering he would be facing the most powerful country in the world. But he probably didn't expect his worst problems to come from his own army, which was an undisciplined and untrained group that would eventually tamper with his great patience. Through it all, he would stay determined and always try to stay one step ahead of the enemy. In the summer of 1775, the Americans prepared to attack the British in Boston. But Washington was informed that they were shorthanded on gunpowder.
In 1781 Arnold Served in the Royal Army and led the attack on Virginia and destroyed the Virginian Fleet. Soon after Benedict Arnold when into went into exile until 1801 in October where he starred down the Gallows with each step, a step closer to death.
In the following years, Benedict’s mother died so he proceeded to take responsibility for his remaining sister and father. His dad, at the time, had been arrested for being drunk in public many times. Following his fathers death, Benedict and his sister moved to New Haven and Arnold worked as a pharmacist and bookseller. When the Stamp Act was passed in 1764, Arnold joined the Sons of Liberty (Benedict).
In 1775, Benedict Arnold had taken his first victory-Fort Ticonderoga. The Battle of the fort occured on May 10, 1775. Arnold and four-hundred soldiers stood opposite of the fort on Lake Champlain and waited for the scouting units to return (CIA). When they had returned, they told Benedict that the fort had only housed fourty-nine British soldiers, a megar amount compared to Benedict's. But the scouts had also noted that there were only two boats that could transport Benedict and his soldiers, therefore only a hundred or so men actually particapted in the capturing of Fort Ticonderoga (History Ticonderoga). Benedict still wanted to suprise the soldiers, so they attacked Ticonderoga's south gate, where only one sentry was stationed. Benedict damanded their surround once they had rose from their sleep. The British troops complied and the fort was won with no casualties and not a single shot fired (CIA). With the fort under the patriots control, the army gained a hundred cannons that the army despreately needed (fourty-three of which were transported and used by General Knox against the British at Boston) and a passage from New York into Canada( History Ticonderoga)which led Benedict to his next military excersion.
Benedict Arnold was born on January 14, 1741 in Norwich, Connecticut to wealthy merchants. When the family business went down due to his father’s drinking problem, Arnold had to drop out of school at age fourteen. Arnold was sent away to learn to become a shop apprentice. When he was twenty-one, Arnold completed his apprenticeship and went to New Haven, Connecticut to open his own drugstore. He soon sunk into debt and was forced to close his store. Then, he became a sea captain for the next ten years. He bought three ships and launched a trading business, trading horses from Canada for rum and molasses in the West Indies. He was eventually able to reopen his store in New Haven and became a member of the New Haven Masonic Lodge. However, British laws began placing heavy taxes on the colonists in order to pay for the colonial war. As a result, Arnold, like many other merchants, began smuggling goods on his sh...

Julius Caesar (100-44 BC) was one of the most outstanding leaders in history. He was the first ruler of the Romano-Hellenic civilization and achieved his goals with great success throughout his life of 56 years. He was assassinated by the conspirators, who accused him of practicing tyranny. This essay will discuss whether it was right for the conspirators to murder Caesar and what its consequences were. The conspirators were wrong to kill Julius Caesar because he contributed to the upturn and reformation of Rome into an orderly state.
Julius Caesar was a strong leader of the Romans who changed the course of the history for the Roman world decisively and irreversibly. With his courage and strength, he created a strong empire and guided the empire for almost 20 years. His life was short, but had many adventures. I will tell of some of this man’s remarkable life. He did many things, therefore, I will only discuss a few. His name, part of his reign, one of his greatest battles, and his death will be told.
Abraham Lincoln was born in Hodgenville, Kentucky, on February 12th of 1809 to Thomas and Nancy Hanks Lincoln. He was born to an undistinguished family and had a sister, Sarah, and a brother,
One of the first occasions presented was the plotting of Caesar’s assassination. Cassius, Casca, Trebonius, Ligarius and the other conspirators all wanted to rid Rome of Caesar. However, not one of them could give the green light.” They needed one who held a high place in the hearts of the people, to support them and to justify their actions. They needed an “honorable” man.
