Peter S. Beagle is the author of the fantasy novel The Last Unicorn. This past Friday he came to speak at University of Houston Downtown’s Wilhelmina Cullen Robertson Auditorium. Mr. Beagle was dehydrated from his trip to Houston, TX from El Paso. Because of this, there was a delay in the presentation, and as a result the speaker decided to stall with a movie in an attempt to keep his audience satisfied and hinder any anger or impatience that may arise until he felt well enough to speak. He was thinking strategically and of his audience. Once the movie was over and he came in, we were finally able to ask questions and hear him speak. As a speaker, he showed an abundance of communication skills, errors, and tactics that helped his presentation, …show more content…
Beagle excelled in was his eye contact towards his audience. Throughout his speaking he consistently kept eye contact with the crowd. There was a period of time where the audience would ask him questions, and whoever it was who asked the question, Mr. Beagle directed his answer to the individual really well. It was as if he was speaking directly to him, because he actually was. Mr. Beagle also was a speaker who stood still in place. He hardly moved, at all. He kept his hands by his side and spoke into the microphone directly. No unnecessary movements were being made, indicating that he wasn’t nervous, though at the same time he wasn’t enthusiastic or confident. Nonetheless, his lips made the most …show more content…
Mr. Beagle was very attentive to his audience. Any question that was asked, he made sure to thoroughly answer the question and go beyond the simple answers. He was a man who cared to inform, and inform is what he did. He thought thoroughly about what he was going to say next, making sure it answered all aspects and even more, to the question. Mr. Beagle was a very friendly man. He always gave a smile to the audience, and made sure to keep a friendly tone, even without any extreme enthusiasm. He was able to make up his lack of enthusiasm with his extreme friendliness. It was ultimately this aspect of the presentation that really pulled in the audience and kept them from assuming he was uninterested due to his tone of voice. In a presentation it’s extremely crucial for the speaker to be clear about what he is saying to his audience. Mr. Beagle was excellent at doing so. When an individual asked Mr. Beagle a question, he first thought about what he was going to say before speaking. This allowed him to speak with confidence and certainty, cutting out any unnecessary word fillers and nervous movements. He also took pauses when he was unsure, or felt as though he was beginning to lose himself in his speaking. A tool that not only helps grab the audiences attention once again, but also helps the speaker gain his composure
To not drown the speech in social angst, she includes subtle, yet exquisite humor to continue keeping the crowd engaged. She strengthens and steadies her gestures to emphasize varying points to the audience. She loosens her gestures to provide humor, while tightening her stance when her statements become forceful or personal. By weaving various styles, Ambam solemnly controlled her numerous gestures to emphasize her ideologies of equality and the structured presence of the American
Originally published in 1747, Benjamin Franklin wrote the speech of Miss Polly Baker as a work of fiction, this work indicates Franklin’s usually progressive views of women for his time period. Although for many years some did believe the story and speech to be true, the character of Miss Polly Baker, and anything that concerned her was completely made up. While some praised the speech, acclaiming its message and welcoming it into the canon of modern American Literature, others saw it as it would question the traditional life as so many people of this time knew. Despite these objections, the speech of Miss Polly Baker remains widely read today by reason
In this case however under the circumstances that it was an award for humor there is leeway on how the speech could appropriately be delivered. He did a very good job at keeping the audiences attention throughout the whole speech even using aids such as his wife and other members in the crowd.
Philip Zimbardo creates an engaging a talk that will draw many people in. He does this by personalizing himself, using facts and figures, as well as real life situations to support his opinions and is qualified because of his degree and
While analyzing the speech, I notice how he isn’t shaky from nervousness or his voice’s pitch getting higher which makes him confident, is already prepared of what he wants to talk about, and therefore does not cause any distractions towards the audience. His voice tone is at his natural state as I assume as it calm, not quick to rush words out, and engages the audience by not bringing
The speaker first grab her viewer’s attention by giving them questions and having self participation. Also, Amy uses humor to keep the audience focus on what is is talking about. She achieved this by her use of funny pictures and videos to break the ice for the viewers and to warm her crowd up. Cuddy also utilized technology in her speech. Her use of technology enhance her discussion by providing visuals to guide the audience in her topic. Together with the technology, Amy used an emotional personal story to keep the attention of the audience. This emotional story used the pathos side of a persuasive speech to use the audience emotion to keep them focus on the subject.
I have always been passionate about kids and family’s that live in poverty and who are desperate for food and water. So, I knew when I heard Ryan Stevenson speaking of an organization called World Vision, that this would be a great speech for this assignment. Ryan Stevenson is a singer and artist who was speaking as well as preforming at the Newsboys concert, at the Brookings Swiftel Center.
In my analysis I will focus on the middle age, renaissance and mythical story representations of unicorns in literature and how they connect with the character Laura Wingfield from The Glass Menagerie.
Martin Luther King touched America with his most famous ‘I Have A Dream’ speech, which was delivered from the steps of the Lincoln Memorial. His passion on demands on racial justice and an integrated society became a motto for the black community today. He stated in the beginning of the speech that this will go down in history as the greatest freedom speech.
I have also learned about different types of audiences and speeches including persuasive, informative, entertaining and delivering special occasion speeches. It came to my attention that whenever I was making these presentations or speeches, I needed to do so with confidence, consistence and practice before the actual presentation and completely eliminate the element of panic. It was also clear that capturing the attention of the audience and engaging them in the whole process, it was necessary to have a very strong introduction and also try and use visuals to deliver the message. It was therefore vital to respect each person’s diversity and cultural values (Lucas, 2011).
The unicorn is a mythological figure. Closely related to the horse, it is uniqueness comes in the form of a long horn located on the center of its forehead. In Laura's menagerie, it is unlike the other figures. In fact, Laura refers to the unicorn as being "freakish." (109) Her characterization of the unicorn reflects how she feels about herself. It is because of its uniqueness that Laura chose to identify with it. She creates a world with her figurines in which the abnormal coexists with the normal. When Jim, the gentleman caller, inquires about the unicorn being lonely, she replies, "He stays on a shelf with some horses that don't have horns and all of them seem to get along nicely together."(101) In her imaginary world no one judges her because of her limp and it is that world she is capable of coping in. Laura's characterization of the figurines hints at her inner desires to be able to deal with the outside world and become less "freakish." Laura tells Jim, "[the figurines] all like a change of scenery once in a while." (102)
Renowned British actress and activist for the feminist movement, Emma Watson, in her speech to the United Nations, “HeForShe,” argues that gender discrimination is a plague to human civilization. Watson’s purpose is to sway the audience that gender inequality has to come to an end, with the support of men and women as advocates for egalitarianism. Additionally, she enlightens the audience that the problem originated from political affairs, the economy, and social disparity. Watson creates a compassionate tone in order to convey men, specifically those who negatively perceived feminism or did not think that feminist issues affected them. Nevertheless, Watson’s speech is ineffectively persuasive due to the poor description she formulated

In public speaking I learned many types of concepts, theories and terms of communication. In concepts of publicly speaking there’s, relaxation, practice, credibility, attention getters, attire, organization, volume, emotion, audience relation, and movement. In my first speech, “The any old bag speech” I quickly learned the do’s, don’ts and concepts of my speech performance.
