The connection between the homes of a culture and the people themselves is indisputable. The home is the setting where the microcosm of a nations idiosyncrasies develop and are applied, but even further than that, the very building itself demonstrates a deep connection to the people. Buildings reflect what is inside through the purpose for construction, construction itself, visible attributes, and even the location of the building is critical. All of these factors demonstrate the connection of architecture and a nation's identity or culture. Vernacular architecture is a massively important topic in regards to the study of Brazilian, and even more generally Latin America’s, culture due to a mass amount of the population being centered around …show more content…
There is a four room style home, which is quite compact, a back of the lot home which runs widthwise , and another similar to the back of the lot home but it run lengthwise. The initial homeplan is reminiscent of the compact central corridor model, which is the most popularly implemented plan historically. The other two types are derived from service buildings generally used during colonial times for residences, and they have very simple construction detailing. Through recent surveys conducted throughout many regions, the simple and compact four room house has been shown to be significantly more popular than any other type. The preferred utilization of the four rooms includes a kitchen, living room, bathroom, and a double bed room. These houses also generally remove the central hallway which was inspired and erected during the colonial days. Many houses hold the same similar setup with small variances. The area of the rooms generally are greater than that of public works projects, and possible options on the local market, and these room sizes generally vary depending on the function. That being said the averages come around to being 14m² for the living room, 12m² for the bedrooms, 13m² for the kitchens, and 4m² for the bathrooms. The house average for many of the favelas goes to around 65m². Now clearly this can vary greatly per household, but provides a general idea of what a favela is sized up to be and what can be
“Because of the rapid growth experienced by this country in terms of urban development, industrialization and population at the beginning of the 21st century, Brazil is facing a number of social, environmental and political challenges” (Meyer 2010). Over the years, Brazils infrastructure has been a topic of concern as the quality and quantity of growth seem to be lacking. One might be familiar with the recent 2016 Olympics in Rio and how many complaints were made about the unfinished quarters where people were staying and how the under developed the city
Architecture, like many things, can also be made for the use of or inspired by the symbols people believe in. Therefore, art and architecture in Ancient Mesoamerica can be stated to be made for the use of religious symbols. Making architecture and art forms takes effort, dedication, and patience. Architecture can take years to make, as was s...

Latin America is a region of happiness and hatred, but most of all, Latin America is a place of history and change. Like many movements in history there is a rise and fall, the meaning of modernism in the Latin Americas enhances our understanding of humanities because it gives us a better understanding of human experiences at the time and it gives the viewer a sense of connection with those who have come before them. Of those people two of them can otherwise be known as Rubén Darío and José Martí.
Metal and wood, bricks and stone; Webster’s Dictionary defines a building as “a structure (such as a house, hospital, school, etc.) with a roof and walls that is used as a place for people to live, work, do activities, store things, etc.” Buildings are all this and more. Buildings tell a story. The design of a building reveals a story of the time period in which it was built. It allows a glimpse into the past or a peek into the future. For the designer or architect, it is an expression of what inspires them. From the ancient ruins in Greece to Dorton Arena in Raleigh, North Carolina; architecture inspires us.
Commercial architecture does it respond to the identity surrounding it? Or does it merely respond to the conditions of Globalization? In order to answer the question above, in the following written piece I must explore the key elements of globalization and identity. I intend to relate both factors to commercial architecture, using the Hilton Tower in Manchester as a prime example. This written piece will effectively be split into two parts (Globalization and Identity).
The palace, Brazil’s Department of Foreign Affairs, function is to represent, negotiate, inform, presence meeting, signing acts, organize or attend receptions, dinners, and banquets that are part of the diplomatic work. The new Palace must have an architectural program that qualifies the diplomatic activities demanded by the international politics. For this purpose, the Palace was design with spaces and environments that hallow symbolic exchanges by enactment of the usual Protocol. This spaces correlate through environments with different degrees of access and permanence, in a way that the foyers, halls, the garden and the porch have scales of intimacy and formality. Number of remarkable features makes the building part of the modern movement. It has a square design, the facades are identical, the ground floor is fluish with its contexts, the body of the building is a glass box standing free from its cover, topped by a terrace garden and set back from the four arched facades, adding the reflecting pool that encloses the palace. Niemeyer creates a stimuli to the senses produced by the modified attributes of light and shade, the geometry and topology of the empty space...
The book as a description of modern architecture, its styles and influence succeeds but falls short as a prescriptive methodology. His work is still recalled for the need by modernists to categorize everything into neat little boxes, not necessarily for the sake of uniformity, but for sake of some ambiguity. The ambiguity may be the triumph of this book as post modern architecture era is supposed to create more questions than the answers.
Every ancient civilization has architectural feats that influence their culture and society, and the Roman Empire is no exception. The transition into the sophisticated culture the occurred in Roman society is known as Romanization. One large part of this movement was the construction of the Roman Villa. Sellers states, “… the idea of a house built away from the city in a natural setting captured the imagination of wealthy patrons and architects,” (1). Roman Villas had great influence on Rome’s development into a higher society through cultural changes, investment and economic patterns, and daily life.
The author explains architecture as an identification of place. Architecture starts with establishing a place. We define ‘place’ as a layout of architectural elements that seem to accommodate, or offer the possibility of accommodation to, a person, an activity, a mood, etc. We identify a sofa as a place to sit and relax, and a kitchen as a place to cook food. Architecture is about identifying and organizing ‘places’ for human use.
The way a person designs their home, from the color choice, down to the layout, says many things about their identity. Whether people want to believe it or not, humans show their personality not only through the clothes they wear, but also through their homes. A house is a sanctuary, it’s a place where people feel protected, comfortable and free. In some cases it may be the only thing people have control over in their life. There is a feeling that some people make when they enter a house that makes them feel emotionally connected to it.

Do the benefits from living in a 500 square foot, design and space conscious, house that can also be comfortable outweigh those of the average American home which is 2,400 square feet (Mitchell)? These are the
Abstract: Everyone wants their home to be pleasant, comfortable and beautiful. Also, the space should be such that attracts everyone. But, in today’s world owning a large space or bungalow becomes quite impossible due to over population. Especially in metro cities owning a large house is not possible. This problem leads to compromise in the space and force people to live in small space i.e. apartment where the space is very less. When it comes to small space, however there is a common misconception that it is not worth the time or money that it takes to create a beautiful home. So, it is importance to establish consistency in space available. This effect can be achieved
There is a new housing movement spreading fast across America. It is based on a desire to cut back on high utility bills and large amounts of possessions to live a more meager, but greener, life. It all started when folks began to consider just how much they were having to work to pay off and maintain their large houses. Fed up with having no time for family or friends, they searched for a better way to live a simpler life that wouldn't strain their wallets to the breaking point. But for those who have never stepped inside a tiny house, it can be hard to understand what it is really like to live in one.
