The industrial revolution was the development of industry that took place in the late 18th and early 19th centuries. Machinery was introduced, more factories were built, population and jobs increased, more goods were produced and steam power became more popular. Rapid changes came out of this time period. Life was forever changed due to the industrial revolution.

In Western Europe during this time, a lot of people began to work in the cottage industry and in factory production. The population of people increased making people want more goods. People needed money to support them so with the beginning of machinery, factories started hiring people to work for them. A cottage industry is a business carried on in a person’s home. In most cases industry owners would buy the child and then the child would be put to work all day. Children did not get an education because they would be working. Adults followed the same routine everyday of there working lives just to make some money. Very little money was made and whatever money was made was put with the rest of the families to be put towards buying food. Sometimes some of the money would be put towards having a place to sleep. Usually six people would sleep in one room with no heat or no door. Factories would pollute the air leaving chemicals on the houses. Eventually people started to become sick and die because of the pollution. Working in a cottage industry or factory production was rough.
