The Importance of The Food Guide Pyramid
The food guide pyramid plays an important role in the health education of the majority of people in the United States. It is meant to guide the general healthy public in how to eat healthy to stay healthy. It includes a wide variety of foods to provide a healthy range of nutrients that are needed daily. The food guide pyramid is an excellent way to educate the public on how to eat healthy. The new food guide pyramid also includes exercise. This is a way to universally educate people. The food guide pyramid is not a way to cure anything or solve any immediate problems; it is guidelines that help people to understand what they should be eating. The food guide pyramid is meant for people without special health circumstances ages 2 and up. It is a way to promote variety in a diet and to help people understand what is good for them. The food guide pyramid includes foods that do not promote chronic diseases. Foods that cause chronic diseases are avoided in the food guide pyramid. As more research is done the food guide pyramid progresses with it. The dietary guidelines are updated every 5 years; these are what provide all of the information for the food guide pyramid. From the first food guide pyramid, it has improved greatly with the research that has been done. It definitely progresses along with the most up to date information that is available. This is what is best for the public (Carole Davis).
The food guide pyramid today is wisely known in the United States and is taught in school as guidelines for healthy eating, and healthy lifestyle. The first guidelines for a healthy diet were published in the USDA’s Framers Bulletin in 1894. W.O. Atwater was the primary researcher in this subject and had written these guidelines. The first guidelines suggested that the diets for American males consisted of protein, carbohydrate, fats, and “mineral matter”. Atwater also talked of overeating being evil. (Davis and Saltos, 1999). This is interesting because today, this is what professionals say should be avoided. The first food guide for children “Food for Young Children” came out in 1916 from the USDA. This guide included five food groups, milk and meat, cereals, vegetables, and fruits, fats and fatty foods, and sugars and sugary food. And the foods we are consuming are not at all healthy, they contain excessive amounts of salt, sugar, saturated fat, carbohydrates, etc. This over eating is not only a severe problem in the adult population but also in America’s children as well. Results from a study performed by the Journal of the American Dietetic Association showed that 1 to 2 year olds get 30 percent more of the 950 calories they require a day. It has also been found that another contributing factor to most children’s bad eating habits is the fact that they either rarely or never consume vegetables and fruit. Besides the lack of fresh fruits and vegetables children are consuming large amounts of sugar. Wether it be in candy or desserts, soda or sugary fruit juices children are beginning to consume these at very early ages. Results from another study performed by the Journal of the American Dietetic Association found that infants are drinking soda out of baby bottles as early as 7 months of age. These last two years, however, I started to gain weight and have become concerned with my diet. Changing my poor eating habits has been difficult for me, however, having this assignment has taught me that it is not as difficult as I previously imagined. Nutrition experts in the United States and Canada have a list of standards with four list values. These list values are called the Dietary Reference Intakes. The DRI committee sets these values for vitamins, minerals, calories, and nutrients.
Compared to the recommendations that I received from the Food Guide Pyramid, I would say that my diet is not where it is supposed to be. To gain a healthy lifestyle and to reach the specific targets for the main food groups on (Super Tracker , 2015). There is a lot of work that must be done. According to the Food Guide Pyramid my meals over the three day period exceeded the amount of calories that I should have eaten. I know that this is true because out of the three days I had McDonald’s for lunch twice. I know that eating fast food is a bad habit of mine and is one if the main reason why I cannot maintain a healthy lifestyle.

People receive most of their nutrition information from media sources like television, magazines, newspapers and books. The nutrition table assignment has taught me much about what exactly goes into my body. Before reading about nutrition, I, like many people, often thought the key to a good nutritional diet was with a restrictive approach (Bushman, 2017, pg. 12). One filled with unappealing options like gluten-free goods that were bland tasting. However, this isn’t the case. A balanced approach is actually more preferable (Bushman, 2017, pg. 38). My initial problem was that I focused too much on a single group. Instead of eating a balanced diet, I ate high levels of protein and vegetables. I neglected dairy, fruit, and grains.
