The internet is an amazing avenue for people to explore. They can do research, learn about new things and generally find things that inspire them. Throughout my many years of using the internet and using social media, I have discovered new things about the world and about myself as an individual. Social media provides a window of interaction, it connects users to others in seconds. Not only does it give people a chance to have conversations with someone they know or someone new from across the world, it lets users inspire and encourage one another to be extraordinary and unique through being themselves. Social media serves several purposes with the use of messages, print, pictures, and videos. While using the internet, you are not …show more content…
There are people who have worked long and hard to develop websites and social media applications to fit consumers wants and needs. It is constantly updating and improving, dealing with glitches and adjusting along the way. Many of the websites that were popular ten years ago are a thing of the past now and act as a blueprint to new websites that crop up every day. With a variety of different ages, from children to older adults using the internet, the content is immense. For a child or a preteen, the media is used for games on the internet, whereas an adult might use the power of the internet to connect with old friends or work related activities. With boundless opportunities, it depends on the individual who uses the media to use it for their own particular needs. As a college student entering my third year, the media has transformed the way I gain my knowledge, do my homework, communicate and make connections. Over the past two years, I was able to navigate the internet and gain useful information from school websites and libraries. I never imagined myself becoming so dependent on the internet and news, however, I do not see it as a bad thing. It was developed for this reason so why not take advantage of it. Using the internet to help with my studies is just one of the many uses that has benefited me. I also use its power to communicate with my friends that attend other …show more content…
With applications such as Facebook, Twitter, Tumblr, and Instagram, I have the freedom to post anything I feel at anytime of the day. I love having this in the palm of my hands because if I am ever having a tough day, I can post a blog or write it down. With social media, I do not always have to have my thoughts go viral. There are also places to write down what you are feeling and have it stored to keep it for yourself. I find this way of coping more effective and uplifting because it acts as a place to release any negative or positive emotions without the fear of someone leaking your feelings. There are also ways to post poems about feelings or stories that the public can view and respond back to. This promotes receiving and giving advice from the writer to the reader or vice versa. By reading other peoples blogs or pages, I have gained confidence to put forth my own writing and hopefully form a following of readers. Confidence plays a huge role in media. For me, it has increased throughout the years with the help of social media. While browsing sites, there are numerous pages available where you can find relationship advice or just common everyday feelings. I feel as if I have a place to connect with others and help them with their problems. Within the past few months, I have discovered a passion for social media, and I hope to develop

Social media provided people with a mean that they can use to strengthen their connection with people they care about. It also facilitated connections to people that were not possible before. People now can connect with societies from all over the world and are able to be impacted by those connections. This made it easier for people who share similar ideas and problems to communicate with each other. As Davidson explains in her essay “Indisputably, the imagination is engaged in making connections in all of those forms, as it is in anything we experience. It is engaged in a different way when we ourselves are making the connections when we’re browsing from one to another link that interests us and draws our attention” (55). Social media made it easier for people to satisfy their need for communication with others. As social beings, humans like to connect with each other; it is how they develop empathy towards others. As Fredrickson explains in her essay “As you interact with one person after another, they gently nudge you to attend to these others more closely and forge connections when possible. They shape your motives and behaviors in subtle ways, yet ultimately, their actions serve to strengthen your relationships and knit you closer to the social fabric of life” (110). Now social media websites or applications serve as pathways
“Social media, a web-based and mobile technology, has turned communication into a social dialogue, and dominates the younger generation and their culture. As of 2010, Generation Y now outnumbers Baby Boomers, and 96% of Gen Y has joined a social network” (Qualman 1). Social media now accounts for the number one use of the Internet, and this percentage is rising bigger every day (Qualman). As a consequence, people are becoming more reliant on social media, which has a led to a number of advantageous as well as unfavorable effects. The world is more connected today than it has ever been in the past, and this is all because of growth in technology. What has yet to be determined though

One of the most harmful consequences is the rise of cyber-bullying. Another negative issue has been the trend of trolling in comments sections of websites, chat rooms, and other online venues of communication. In spite of this, there have been constructive consequences due to social media such as the ability for family and friends to keep in touch on a regular basis. Because of social media, many people are finding support and resources to help them when they fall on hard times or experience tragedies like death and illness. Overall, social media is an exciting new world that changes as it grows and it will be up to society to utilize it for good.
The University of Salford in the UK did a study last year on social media’s effects on self-esteem and anxiety, and reported that 50% of their 298 participants said that their “use of social networks like Facebook and Twitter makes their lives worse”. Social media is so popular that according to a recent article published by forbes.com, “72% of American adults are currently using social media sites; that figure has gone up 800% in just 8 years”(Olenski). Social networking was originally created to simply reconnect people with old high school pals, but in recent years it has evolved into a completely different operation. When social media first originated it was also intended for adult usage, which has in recent years expanded into the usage of all ages. Social media can create a negative affect on lives because it has been proven to be a dangerous addiction, for it takes away interpersonal relationships that are essential in life, and it has been proven to prevent people from being productive in life.

Modern technology has made information much easier to obtain. The Internet and World Wide Web have given people the ability to access all sorts of information very quickly and quite easily. This is an advantage for many people, especially in business. Scholars can quickly share information amongst each other to help them learn more about a topic for example. Other social media sites that are getting more and more popular are Instagram, Snapchat, Tumblr, Pinterest, and many others social media websites that people use on a daily basis. With one in four people using social media sites, such as Facebook and Twitter, it is no wonder that all of these social media websites are considered to be important (Whiteman). With a few clicks of a button or taps on a screen, a person can be connected to family and friends in every corner of the world. Social media can even allow people to see what their favorite celebrities are doing with their lives. According to Honor Whiteman,”Social media defines an array of internet sites that enable people from all over the world to interact.
