Social media has been growing at an explosive rate over the last decade. Within just the last five years, social media has gained more than 1.3 billion users, which is an 88% rise since 2012 (Kemp). According to Merriam-Webster, social media is defined as forms of electronic communication through which users create online communities to share information, ideas, personal messages, and other content (Social Media), the most popular including Facebook, YouTube, Twitter, and Snapchat. Social media has allowed for news distribution, traffic message delivery, increased teen awareness, increased marketing exposure, and global natural disaster relief support (Agrawal). However, with all things good, there is always some bad, such as a decrease in physical socialization, lack of actual productivity, higher expectations of how things should be, loss of privacy (Benson), and the worst off all, manipulation of the masses.
In reality, social media has prevailed throughout society’s development because people are able to communicate on a more global scale. Due to social media, people all around the world are able connect and discuss many topics that range from serious things such as politics to more frivolous things such as what a celebrity wore on the red carpet. In the age of technology and the notion that information has to be obtained at a lightening speed, libraries have come to the realization that they need to apply social media applications to enhance to overall experience for the community in the public library sector. Gone are the days of the librarian hiding behind the service desk or shuffling around with a book cart. To get funding, the public involved and perhaps a new sustaining donor, librarians are now tasked with developing, creating and monitoring various forms of social media. These outlets could be Facebook, Twitter, Instagram, or Pinterest. Anyone can create one of these accounts but it takes planning, performance, and consistent monitoring to effectively utilize these methods in an appropriate and well thought out manner.

Exposing students to the power of social media in the classroom is an important part of preparing them to be active and positive digital citizens in a 21st century world. In the last two years, my own students have rapidly been drawn to Twitter, Instagram, Tumblr, and many other social networking platforms. They upload, share, and connect with others often without any regard to how their digital footprints may reflect them as individuals. Having continuous conversations with students about the choices that they make can lead to positive results. Students don't realize how powerful social media platforms can be in terms of networking, researching, and engaging in academic conversations. It makes me laugh every time I hear them whisper about my colleague Heather's or my Twitter feed. First of all kids, I can hear you. Second of all, yes, social media can be an amazing way to give and exchanged knowledge.
