The general public relied upon print and electronic media to know what is happening throughout the world. Whether it is current events, movies or entertainment – it was never readily available to people like it is available today. The Internet allows us to, bypass borders and mix with the culture of other counties all over the world, without having a passport. Technology allows us to make new friends, stay in touch with current friends and find long lost friends and family within seconds if not instant around the country and the world, on cellular and android phones. The world becomes a much smaller place when you think about how the internet can unite the population of different countries. Herman, J. If this were to take place with a company using this type of media for advertising, it could have adverse effects on the product being advertised resulting in a loss of revenue. Whether or not to use social media for personal is up to the individual or corporation. Some people like my sister in-law refuse to make a Facebook or Instagram page because she does not want the world to know her personal business. She feels that people spend too much time on these sites, connecting with ex-wives, ex-husbands an ex- boy/girl friends that it causes too much drama in a person’s life that they might not otherwise have if they just left these social networking sites alone.

As of 2010, Generation Y now outnumbers Baby Boomers, and 96% of Gen Y has joined a social network” (Qualman 1). Social media now accounts for the number one use of the Internet, and this percentage is rising bigger every day (Qualman). The world is more connected today than it has ever been in the past, and this is all because of growth in technology. What has yet to be determined though
Facebook is an online social media platform. And as this article is about social media platform, it’s best to clarify what the word really means. Think of old media e.g. newspaper and television. We can read a report on a newspaper or listen to the report on television, but it’s actually a one way street, where you can’t really give your own thoughts on that matter. On the other hand, social media not only gives you the information, it also gives you the power to communicate your own thought.
Facebook is a social network that lets you post anything you want, like; statuses, pictures, videos. You can see what your friends are doing just by what they post and they can do the same for you. Twitter is about the same when it comes to sharing posts, pictures, etc. but you have a limit of characters for each tweet you send.. These social networks take over a persons’ life because of how much they are on it; but this is only one of few major problems with that come with these networks. There have been cases when people libel one another, trying to ruin each other’s lives. There are teenagers bullying other teenagers on these networks and we call it cyberbullying. Two other major problems are invasion of a person’s privacy and Facebook tracking your every move.
These are all very real concerns for companies and their legal counsel. In addition to the concern over current employees causing problems with social media usage, internally it can be a danger. In some cases, potential applicants are being asked to provide their passwords to enable a possible future employer into their personal accounts. This violation of privacy opens up huge legal implications for companies, especially when done during a hiring process. If an applicant is not hired and the applicant can prove it was due to something on their social media accounts, this could cause a company large sums of money to settle claims or battle them out in the court system.

With the use of social media you can be friends with all sorts of people without actually seeing or knowing them. “In many ways, social communities are the virtual equivalent of meeting at the general store or at church socials to exchange news and get updated on friends and families” (Cosmato).
A person’s life is reflected on Facebook. Because so much of someone’s life is on Facebook, anyone can have a sense of what is going on in their life. This is beneficial for parents away from their children in college or just away from the nest. A visual image is more attractive than reading a lengthy blog about an individual's day. With Facebook someone can post albums at a time and can share a special event that just recently occurred. Instant messaging has improved the speed that users can communicate with each other. If they see that their friend is online all that needs to be done is a message with the word “Hey.” Facebook allows for users to connect with friends time zones away.
Did you remember to tell your cousin happy birthday on Facebook? Do you know how many people liked your latest picture on instagram? Or how many retweets did you get on your totally relatable and borderline inspirational tweet? As of January 2014, 74% of online adults use social networking sites (Rainie). Also more than 9 out of 10 American teenagers use social media(Blaszczak). Because of social networking we are becoming more connected than ever before.
