Certain smells can trigger memories. They can either trigger positive or negative memories. Smells and Memory are closely connected in your brain. Usually, when people smell a familiar scent somewhere, they can recall another time when they smelled the same scent. This happens because of all the close connections in your brain. All the parts of a human's brain controll a certain part of you. The smell analyzing region of your brain is connected to the memory region of your brain. Therefore, someone could remember events based on certain smells.

How Smells and Memory Work Every so often someone might catch a quick whiff of pine trees or campfire smoke that suddenly bring them back to that time when they went camping, or took a hike in the woods. This is called odor-evoked autobiographical memory. In other words, it is when a person can remember something from the past based on a specific smell. Research has shown that smells are the strongest reminders of events from the past. Scientists think this is true because of the way the brain processes smells and memories. With smells, people have a lot of extra processing before they even realize the smell. A lot of people's bodies contain many more smell receptors (about 1,000) than any amount of receptors for other senses. This means that the odor-cued memories are much stronger. In an experiment, adults were given three cues ( a word, a picture, or an odor) and asked to try and recall memories from that specific word, picture, or odor. The results confirmed that odor-cued memories were usually within the first ten years of the adult’s life, but the visual and verbal information were from the participants early
