The first stage of memory is the sensory memory. Sensory memory holds sights, sounds, smells, textures, and other sensory impressions for only a few seconds, and it operates on an unconscious level. Sensory memory has the ability to retain impressions of different sensory information. Sensory memory is the ultra-short term memory and it retains brief impressions of the sensory stimuli after the stimulus has ended. It holds the shortest impression of sensory information and even when the sensory system does not send information the sensory memory still holds the shortest impression. There are many different issues and characteristics of the sensory memory; it has a high capacity to form memory registration of visual data, and the information that’s stored is un-interpreted, and the it the visual information fades away after less than a second. In order to use the information in your sensory memory, you must encode the information quickly. The sensory memory is the hardest memory to grasp and most of what we sense is forgotten. Sensory memory allows the eye to have a larger field of vision by remembering images that your eye has already focused on. Once we have learned something I believe that we will always remember it, we may forget about it at a certain time, but if we ever came across the information again, it will be retrieved from our long term memory. Just because we do not use all the information we learn it is still stored in your memory, so in all actuality we never really forget anything. If information isn’t stored in our memory then learning would be pointless.
= Memory is the process of storing information and experiences for possible retrieval at some point in the future. This ability to create and retrieve memories is fundamental to all aspects of cognition and in a broader sense it is essential to our ability to function properly as human beings. Our memories allow us to store information about the world so that we can understand and deal with future situations on the basis of past experience. The process of thinking and problem solving relies heavily on the use of previous experience and memory also makes it possible for us to acquire language and to communicate with others. Memory also plays a basic part in the process of perception, since we can only make sense of our perceptual input by referring to our store of previous experiences.
Discounting old and useless information help the students in daily basis wherein it is difficult for a students to remember everything happens in a day like where it parked the car, it brings in the mind all the car parks that the students seen. Slater states that, “Normal human brain built within it mechanism that allows for forgetting" (219). Thus, human brain has the capacity to delete memory that is less relevant or inaccessible especially that caused them trauma like terrible events, plane crashes, or personal attacks that strongly needed to forget. However lost memories can be revived by recalling memories because brain has the ability to construct past experiences like to recall names and faces, skills like riding a bike or smoking cigarette. However, remembering memories matters at age, a young children for example has no idea how their memory works and that they will not remember everything they are told, but for about seven to eight years of age children come to have an understanding of memory. As children grow older they learn to recall their memories which starts to develop and improve for better understanding. She notes that, “Memory are the footprints we live in our lives; without them we look back and see just a blank stretch of snow, or someone else's signature entirely"(Slater181). The first issue that needs to be addressed however is what exactly is memory? “ Without memory we would be servants of the moment, with nothing but our innate reflexes to help us deal with the world. There would be no language, no art, no science, no culture. Civilization itself is the distillation of human memory” (Blakemore 1988). The simple interpretation of Blakemore’s theory on what memory is that a person’s memory is at least one of the most important things in their life and without it civilization itself could not exist.
Memory is an important and active system that receives information. Memory is made up of three different stages sensory memory, short term memory, and long term memory. According to the power point presentation, sensory memory refers to short storage of memory that allows an individual to process information as it occurs. Short term memory refers to memory that is only available for a limited time. It is information that is held for seconds or sometimes even minutes. Long term memory refers to memory that is stored for a long period of time and it has an unlimited capacity with the ability to hold as much information as possible. Memory is a group of related mental processes that are involved in acquiring, storing, and retrieving information (Hockenberry and Hocenberry page 232). I will be addressing two specific types of memory: short-term memory and long-term memory. Short-term memory holds temporary information transferred from sensory memory or long-term memory. Sensory memory is the first stage of memory and obtains information for a brief amount of time. Short-term memory is also called active memory and is stored in the prefrontal cortex which is the most active part of the brain during an activity. The brain receives information and processes it, this happens rapidly, half of the sensory neuron that is liable for processing visual information, part of the brain is responsible for processing it.
Throughout the field of psychology, the fascinations with the human mind and its capacities have led researchers to query and continually assess the complex concept of memory. Memory is the ability to process, store and recall information we obtain from external stimuli and sources. Once exposed to the stimuli, the successful development of memory entails a three stage process. The first stage, the encoding phase, is responsible for entering data. The next stage, called the consolidation phase, stores the information and leads into the third stage, the retrieval phase, which makes the stored information readily accessible for future use. Memory is the tool we use to learn and think. We all use memory in our everyday lives. Memory is the mental faculty of retaining and recalling past experiences. We all reassure ourselves that our memories are accurate and precise. Many people believe that they would be able to remember anything from the event and the different features of the situation. Yet, people don’t realize the fact that the more you think about a situation the more likely the story will change. Our memories are not a camcorder or a camera. Our memory tends to be very selective and reconstructive.
In the process of memory, there are three stages which are; encoding, storage and retrieval. All three stages determines whether or not a memory is stored or forgotten.The first stage is the processing of information which is known as encoding. Encoding involves converting information into a useable form so that it can be stored in memory. There are many ways of encoding such as acoustically, visually or semantically. Storage, which is the second stage, involves the retention of the information. This is done by organising information so it can be used or retrieved when required. Lastly the retrieval process is where locating and recovering the information stored in the long term memory occurs. In order to retrieve this information back to the short term memory, prompts or cues may be used. The information can be recalled and recognised. In order to understand the functional relationship between learning and memory we have to first define what both learning and memory are. Learning can be described as “the acquisition of knowledge or skills through experience, practice, or study, or by being taught” (Merriam-Webster, 2014). “Memory is the means by which we draw on our past experiences in order to use this information in the present” (Sternberg, 1999). Base on this definitions one can conclude memory is essential part of our lives. Without any memory of the past, we would not be able to operate in the present or reminisce about the future. We would not be able to remember what we did a few days ago, what we have accomplished today, or what we intend to do tomorrow. Without memory our ability to learn would not exist. Learning and Memory are linked to our cognitive abilities as well as that of animals. An example that can be used to show the relationship between learning and memory is the study of how a rat behaves in a maze. As we all know rats have been used in experimental mazes since at least the early 20th century. Hundreds if not thousands of studies have looked at how rats run different types of mazes, from T-maze, to radial arm mazes, and to water mazes. These maze studies help scientist study spatial learning and memory in rats. Maze studies helped us uncover general principles about learning that can be applied to several species, including mankind. In today’s modern societies, mazes tend to be used to determine whether different treatments affect learning and memory in rats. Central idea: Memory is a process of the brain which is prone to certain failures, although specific steps can be taken to guard against these failures.
“Brain must apply a filter” and “they’re blocking out trivial information” explains that the brain would need to do extra hard work in order to remember the past as well as the present (Carey 23). An article shown proved that Carey‘s claim is accurate. “Health Check: Can Your Brain Be 'Full'?” written by Fiona Kumfor and Sicong Tu are both doctors that explained that similar information in the brain can get mixed together, therefore; one information is interfering another one. Useless information can be forgotten; it is not important to have those kind of memories. Old memories tend to get pushed back in the brain which allows new memories to form. Additionally, Eric Kandel, a neuroscientist, wrote an article about a memory is created due to a person’s activity. His article, “The Molecular Biology of Memory Storage: A Dialogue Between Genes and Synapses.”, explained in depth what happens to a memory over time. People need to absorb in ideas to be able to retain the memory. If one doesn’t continue to repeat an activity, then that memory from that particular activity will slowly fade away. Learning is something that human beings can be able to remember things, however; humans consistently learn which leads to having to remember more things. Long-term memory is how humans process in the present, recall information from the past, or think about the future. Without long-term memory one cannot remember past memories, today, or what we may plan to do in the future. On top of that, there is no learning without long-term memory and the progress that we see today in our fast pace driven world would not exist. While reading Memory and Being a Successful College student, I have come to realize that our memory has a key role in our learning. Without our memory we would not be able to learn for the reason that when we receive new information there has to be a place to store it this is when our consciousness comes to take care of us. But many people see it as by just listening you will acquire the knowledge, however the mind is more complex than that since our brain gets distracted, and has three types of memory. The first reason was our brain gets distracted by your surrounding this is known as a secondary task, but there is a way to limit your attention so you can focus on what you really need to learn.
