Self-Advocacy – Taking an active role in 5 key areas of your life Emotional, Mental, Social, Spiritual, and Career Self-Advocacy is generally defined as when someone acts or speaks out for themselves, in a bid to effecct personal change, correct imbalances or inequalities or to improve their quality of life. In more general terms, it's simply about being able to articulate your needs and make decisions as to how best to meet your needs. It means being in complete control over your feelings, behaviors, and thoughts. You can cope with the challenges that life throws in your way and despite that, you have no trouble keeping those issues in perspective. A setback is something that you bounce back from, rather than collapse under. You are able to maintain healthy relationships and you feel good about yourself. What it doesn't mean is that you're going to be happy all the time, but you will be more aware of the emotions you experience. You are able to deal healthily with both negative and positive emotions. People who are emotionally healthy tend to deal with issues more effectively, but they will still experience sadness, stress, and anger. The difference lies in their ability to manage those feelings and understand when a problem is too much to deal with alone, when to reach out for help, and when a doctor's advice is necessary. If this doesn't sound like you, don't worry because it's a skill that you can improve, and there are steps to get you there.
