Race is involved in education because of teachers. In my opinion, teachers involve race in education as they deal with things in class based on their racial belief. For instance, teachers believe that there has a racial difference between white and black students as white students are smarter than Black students. Therefore, teachers usually put all white students in one group and all black students in another group. This action of teachers not only give their racial belief to all the students in class, but also leave all students with a constructed view of the world as a segregated place where whites and blacks live separately. First, race is important in education because it causes the creation of meritocracy and affirmative action. And both creations are offering equal opportunity to every person or every race under the knowlege-based society. Under the principle of meritocracy, students from different races have equal opportunity to compete the access of higher education based on their test scores and academic performance, instead of their backgrounds. For instance, unlike the whites, the black and Latino student with high test scorces and no backgrounds can obtain the higher education. Besides the meritocracy, the affirmative action also gives equal opportunity to different races as if Robinson slide says "A policy or program providing advantages for people of a minority group who are seen to have traditionally been discriminated against, with the aim of creating a more egalitarian society through preferential access to education, employment, health care, social welfare, etc." Since many schools only recruit students from a special race and cause other races underrepresented in school, the affirmative action is created. Unequal funding and lack of opportunities offering are restricted minority students to compete to white students. The school system is not independently separated from race and racism as people think. Race and racism are social illness that immediately need action in order to bring the best atmosphere and energy for educational system because schools are places for teaching and learning. Education should be a journey towards someone’s life. It should not be based upon race. Don’t look around and let race put you in your place. Although, race and criticizing still remains today. Through out history education has been a topic of many concerns. Historically Black Colleges and Universities were established to try and provide freed slaves education they were not able to obtain. For African Americans in the 20th century attending school was a burden. The children had to withstand long walks to get to their designated schools, being denied classes that the white students had in their schools, outdated books and hand me down classroom materials. African Americans all across the United States fought for their kids rights to get a good education, education provided to white only schools. There was a period of time schools were able to legally deny a student acceptance into their institutions based solely on the color of their skin. Many African Americans tried and majority of them got denied. Students at all levels were being denied, from Pre-K all the way up to college. After many attempts to integrate schools parents of the children being denied education just like the white kids, they realized it would be easier to just build their own schools.
Even though extraordinary changes have been made in the past to achieve racial equality, America is still racist, especially in schools. In the novel, “To Kill a Mockingbird,” written by Harper Lee, Atticus Finch is criticized for defending a black man accused of raping a white woman. During the 1930s, the time this novel took place, America was a very segregated country. At the time when Harper Lee wrote "To Kill a Mockingbird," America was fighting a civil rights movement. The events of racism in “To Kill a Mockingbird” reflect the time period.
Many people in the United States society believe that people of all cultures, races, and ethnicities are now on an even playing field. People with this belief support their logic with the argument that since equal rights for people of color and women have been required by law for some time now, we are all inherently as equal as claimed in the Declaration of Independence. Many believe that race is no longer an issue, a viewpoint frequently referred to as color-blindness. National polling data indicated that a majority of whites now believe discrimination against racial minorities no longer exists. (Gallagher, 96) Color-blindness allows a white person to define himself or herself as politically and racially tolerant and then proclaim their adherence to a belief system that does not see or judge individuals by the “color of their skin.” (Gallagher, 98) Many Caucasians in particular are of the opinion that because they listen to hip-hop or cheer for their favorite black, professional sports player that they are not racist. Still others believe that because they have a black president, we see black people in the commercial of products we consume, or enjoy television shows with black people that they are actually acknowledging race. Affirmative action has been a controversial topic ever since it was established in the 1960s to right past wrongs against minority groups, such as African Americans, Hispanics, and women. The goal of affirmative action is to integrate minorities into public institutions, like universities, who have historically been discriminated against in such environments. Proponents claim that it is necessary in order to give minorities representation in these institutions, while opponents say that it is reverse discrimination. Newsweek has a story on this same debate which has hit the nation spotlight once more with a case being brought against the University of Michigan by some white students who claimed that the University’s admissions policies accepted minority students over them, even though they had better grades than the minority students. William Symonds of Business Week, however, thinks that it does not really matter. He claims that minority status is more or less irrelevant in college admissions and that class is the determining factor.

The social construction of racism and the feeling of superiority to people of other ethnicities, have been distinguishably present in European societies as well as America throughout the last several centuries.
I decided to write about the influence of race and ethnicity on a person’s educational level. I was born and raised in the Dominican Republic where, within my social group, schooling and education was deemed as an essential part of life. In the United States, however, there exist a greater number of racial and ethnic groups, and it is evident that an achievement gap exists among these groups. Here, Dominicans are marginalized as part of a Hispanic minority group that does not achieve the educational status of other groups, such as Whites or Jewish. I chose to write about the disparity of education within races and seek to answer how race affects a person’s educational level.
Integrated colleges in the South prior to the start of Civil War were uncommon, yet, Reverend John Gregg Fee was able to promote interracial education by founding the town of Berea and Berea College. As the South’s first interracial and coeducational college, educating Blacks and Whites individuals, both males and females, Kentuckians saw this as taboo in a predominately slave practicing society. Fee had many accomplishments, such as starting the utopian community of Berea and establishing a non-sectarian church that did not discriminate on one’s denomination. Fee was a strong advocate for “impartial love,” believing one’s race, gender, or religion should not be a factor for obtaining this type of love. Fee’s major accomplishment was the founding of Berea College as an interracial college in a slave-holding state. However, this accomplishment did not last long and by examining the effects of the Day Law, actions of former Berea College presidents, and the world outside the Berea community, one will see how the College has not been consistent in Fee’s goal of an equal interracial education.

The focus of this paper is on the history of affirmative action and its relevance to our society. Affirmative action focuses on the importance of equality and equal opportunity among all people in terms of education and employment. In coordination with the Civil Rights Act of 1964 and the Equal Employment Opportunities Act of 1972, the affirmative action policy was submitted by federal agencies. Is it not true that ethnic minorities do not have the same opportunities in life as whites, and that women should be entitled to the same opportunities as men?
