Professionalism is an important characteristic that all teachers should display towards colleagues and parents. Education has changed a lot over the years, and as we encounter the 21st century, acting like a true professional is still the way teachers should act. As an educator, it is important that I keep on improving my skills as a teacher, and Walden University is going to play a big role in my development and growth. I want to make a positive mark in society for my students. When you look at making a positive social change, it is easy to see the similarities in what professionalism means in the 21st century. I have a vision of where I want to go, and the MSED program is going to lead me in the right direction. For example, I want to be known as a teacher of high ethics and integrity, and someone that promotes equity with all students. The RWRCOEL Professional Dispositions state that candidates demonstrate professionalism outlined by legal guidelines within the profession and that the candidate demonstrates culturally responsive practices to create an inclusive learning environment that is respectful of diverse cultures (RWRCOEL Professional Dispositions, n.d.). Classrooms today are filled with students of diverse cultures and backgrounds, and I need to be able to address their needs. I will be collaborating with colleagues, students, administrators, and other stakeholders, so ethical behavior and integrity are a must for teachers. There are other dispositions that will guide me to where I want to go. In this scenario, Margaret is a newly hired medical assistant for this very busy medical practice. Margaret had good intentions with wanting to leave a good impression. However, she should have thought more about patient care and her ability to perform a procedure on her own. Fortunately, even though the office seemed to need the extra help. Margaret being a new hire and having not much time with blood draws, or the way that the office is run. Should have consulted with one of the experienced staff members of RN’s, Medical assistants and seven providers. She should have also asked about their policy and the procedures that the practice uses.
One of the first steps in of professionalism is dress; I make sure I am always dressed both professionally and comfortably for our classroom setting. For example if I know we are going to the Playscape, I wear either closed toed tennis or water shoes so I can get down and dirty and interacting with the children, really exploring the landscape. If I am wearing a dress I am conscious of how I sit or even go at step further and wear leggings underneath just so I don’t have to be worried. Another aspect of professionalism in the classroom is language. I always use appropriate language when speaking to the children, parents and my coworkers. Confidentiality is also a part of professionalism. Whenever I am taking notes or speaking of a child I am sure to keep it a confidential, I do not use names and am sure to only keep the information between the teaching team and I.
Professionalism can be defined as the competence of skills and principles of an individual in a profession. A professional must be knowledgeable in their profession, committed to improvement of one’s knowledge and skills, service oriented, covenantal relationships to patients/patrons, creative, innovative, ethical, accountable and a leader. These competencies are essential for a professional to perform and excel in their profession.
The occupations that I have chosen to analyze using the three elements for this assignment are paraprofessional, what I am currently, and a teacher, what I am going to college to become. Teachers and paraprofessionals work side by side, collaborate, plan, and share many of the same experiences. However, paraprofessionals are often not treated as equals and has created some ethical judgement regarding treatment of the paraprofessionals from other teachers and administrators in the business of education. I want to use this assignment as an opportunity to distinguish the true professional using the elements designed for this course.
Professionalism is defined as the accrued knowledge and behavior possessed by individuals in order to obtain successful goals and attributes for their organization, facility or work environment (McDonagh, 2008). Being professional while at work let others know that you are reliable, respectful, and competent at what you do. Professionalism in a medical office is very important, it means putting patient needs as top priority. Professionalism in a medical office is taking responsibility of your patients, committing to patient confidentiality, and having patient-centered care for the patients.
When it is coming to define the term of “Professionalism” it has specific needs of every discipline. Hence, most of these definitions agreed that professional demonstrates behavior that show the knowledge and the skills of the profession. Regardless the lack of a professionalism definition, it is a consistent in the prose that are expected to have specific knowledge which they can utilize to make judgements, specialized training, characters that are unique in the field and the standards that are answerable. Though, teacher professionalism responsibilities it is important to everyone.
Professionalism, within the nursing context, can be a concept that is complex. The definition of professionalism, according to the textbook, Nursing Now!, is “The demonstration of high-level personal, ethical, and skill characteristics of a member of a profession” (Catalano, 2017, p. 5). There are many characteristics that define professionalism in the workplace and actions that a nurse can take to portray a professional attitude and manner. In nursing school, professionalism is taught in the classroom using different examples of education.
Googling the question: “ What is professionalism of a student in physical therapy program?, just in 0.81 seconds, there are about 723000 results suggestion for this. Unsurprisingly, with little effort of searching, it is not difficult to find the glut of resources out there. Moreover, these results could be somewhat (generic) answers in most of the applicants. In my point of view, the professionalism for a student in the doctor of physical therapist program also could be true for other programs, especially for health care specialty because physical therapy is one of the general practices. Professionalism is an adherence to a set of values comprising both a formally agreed-upon code of conduct and the informal expectations of colleagues, clients and society. The key values include acting in a patient's interest, responsiveness to the health needs of society, maintaining the highest standards of excellence in the practice of medicine and in the generation and dissemination of knowledge. In addition to medical knowledge and skills, medical professionals should present psychosocial and humanistic qualities such as caring, empathy, humility and compassion, as well as social responsibility and sensitivity to people's culture and beliefs. All these qualities are expected of members of highly trained professions.
In current healthcare settings, team work is a vitality that ensures quality care for patients. A team is a group of people comprising two or more individuals who works mutually together towards a shared goal (Ryan, 2017). Teamwork involves collaboration towards common goals between two or more individuals with varied job scopes (Fernandez et al., 2008). Cooperation and acceptance within teams help prevent dangers and promote well-being of patients too (Green et al., 2017). These factors are highly valued, as they promote holistic care rendered to patients. Additionally, professionalism can also be portrayed through abiding the regulatory framework and requirements for healthcare professionals (Chartered Society of Physiotherapy, 2017). Professionalism includes self-governing practices in the scope of the profession and in continuing professional development (Chartered Society of Physiotherapy, 2017). To advocate for professionalism, the code of conduct was created by Allied Health Professions Council (AHPC). It is a set of conduct and attitude expected of enlisted healthcare professionals to act to the greatest advantage of patients, the general population and moral principles of the standards amongst the various healthcare

Professionalism in the context of being a student in a doctor of physical therapist degree program begins with a basic understanding of physical therapy. In order for a student to be professional they must remember what their responsibilities are as a future treating professional. By this part of the application process most Doctorate of physical therapy (DPT) applicants have become aware of fundamental necessities that treating patients entails. The first major hurdle, they have a hard time asking for help when it is needed, honesty is a very important trait to understanding professionalism. Continuing education is one that comes a little easier for students because it has become all we know, studying day in and day out however it is also a trait that can be lost in the blink of an eye when you are not held accountable. Furthermore, the notion that everyone should be treated equal is not foreign for most students however unfortunately for some the same thing cannot be said.
Professionalism is defined as one's conduct at work. The quality of professionalism is not restricted to those in occupations with high level of education or high earnings. Any worker regardless of their level of education or occupation should demonstrate a high level of this trait (About.com, 2013). Acting professionally at workplace makes others think of you as reliable, respectful, and competent.
Additional expected qualities that create the essentials of professionalism in relation to teaching are a high level of cognitive skills and social capabilities together with experienced personal qualities as stated by Marsh (2008) which include sensitivity, compassion, reflective and innovative thinking and commitment and dedication to the job. This support to facilitate such desired moral qualities as respect, caring, integrity, diligence and open communication as outlined by Groundwater-Smith (2009), the relationship of which is reinforced by Whitton (2009 p.47) in defining professionalism in teaching as being “…dependant of correct standards with the right conduct or practice”.
Professional development, in its most simple definition, is learning opportunities. Under professional development, individuals are open to a wide array of these opportunities in order to gain knowledge and improve. The learning opportunities that make up professional development take up many forms. Conferences that aim to teach new skills and methods, formal pieces of academic material, training methods provided by an external or internal organizations are all learning opportunities through which professional development is attained. Professional development is a continuous process, that requires adapting to new techniques and approaches to improve a person’s technical capabilities.
