History, or Sejarah in the Malay Language, is always a traumatic experience for most of the students in Malaysian schools. Have we ever pondered how many students actually enjoy learning history ? There are only three answers to be delivered which are yes, no or I don’t even have time to think about that. Yet amidst our uncertainty over this question, we are still pushing and squeezing our students to learn history merely for them to pass the SPM examination, a pre-requisite to them earning their SPM certificate.
In order to grasp or understand a subject, a student must have a passion for it. Unfortunately, passion for History is no longer instilled among students by educators, parents and other “responsible” people and that’s why the hate for this subject is substantially increasing.Students simply do no more than memorize mountains of historical facts . The issue now is, how are we going to make history highly captivating as a subject to learn in school, while enjoying the

First, nurture the seeds of passion in your heart. The reason why I stick to the word “passion” a lot is because it can have a powerful impact in every undertakings in your life. Don’t do something because you are forced to do it, do it because you love it and can’t stay away from doing it. No matter how tough it is, you’ll find a way to succeed because you’re passionate. That’s why Steve Jobs , founder of Apple.Inc quoted that “ The only way to achieve great things is to love what you do”. Famous historians, history lovers faced the same problem in their school days but they managed to overcome it by liking it or found some engaging ways to learn History. This could be a slow process ( to develop passion) but it’s alright to do it slowly than giving up. You might hit back at me by saying “ I’ve got a whole syllabus to finish and exams to score. Are you insane?”. Am I insane? I’ll answer this later, definitely , so keep on
“High school students hate history.”(pg.12) Even though in the end, that is the class they have the easiest time passing. Studies have showed that the more history classes that students take the less that they learn. They become “more stupid” about history.(pg.12) “African American, Native American, and Latino stu...
Written by Chaim Potok, The Chosen takes place during a significant moment in world history. The Chosen begins at the end of World War II in Williamsburg, which was heavily populated by Jews in 1940s. Throughout the book, The Chosen further includes various historical events in 1940s related to political situations in the world at that time. Those events are not mere backdrops but contribute significantly to the plot and content. Among them, there are five significant historical events that influence on the Malter’s and Saunders’ families. It includes D-Day, the death of President Roosevelt, end of World War II, revelation of the Holocaust in Europe, and struggle for the state of Israel creation. Each of those historical occurrences shows its
The lengths that many textbook writers go to keep our history on a positive note, and to make heroes out of many of our historical figures comes at a high cost, according to Loewen. These costs include incorrect history, and boring history. The end results are students who hate history class, and who come out of those classes not equipped to think about our past in a rational or coherent way.
...ime of the author rather then accurate historical facts. (Lies?293) Textbooks are being written this way and history is being taught this way to show people how they should act and strive to be. This relays to the student what is deemed acceptable to everyone and what is not. When it comes to a student remembering historical lessons they normally do not remember what is being taught to them unless they are moved by it. (Lies?301) So what is the result to a society where our students are being taught this way? The number one result is that students do not know the true history of their country nor do they remember what they were taught in class. This is a sad conclusion but Mr. Loewen feels it is an accurate one given responses to questions he has asked his students throughout the years. What can we do to change this and reeducate the people out there? Sadly I feel nothing can be done for those of us out there who are not truly aware of this misinformed way of teaching. But, our children need not be sheltered from our true history, rather they should learn all that has happened so we can prevent the atrocities from reoccurring again.
History has many examples of these three themes, and to record them all, you would need to write a book. The three themes discussed in this paper have been used to inform and teach young students that history is important; Therefore, it is important to know your history; if you don't learn from history, then you are doomed to repeat
“History never says goodbye. History says see you later” (Eduardo Galeano). History teaches us valuable lessons from the past, which can be used for the present time, yet our leaders usually overlook these lessons and repeat previous mistakes. I have recently immigrated to the United States and since in my home country history classes are not a place to really discuss the history, I was amazed by the way that this history class challenged every event and fact. I have learned that history is told by bias, so we should be able to think critically and question what we are taught. History is usually written by the dominant group of the society, so if we are looking for the truth, we should study each event from different resources and different
Many people try to think “back to the good old days,” when really they were not that good for most people who had no rights. With the advancement in technology, we were forced to open our eyes to what is going on in the world around us and the disadvantaged people face throughout the world. As a society once we start to working on damage control to clean up the mess we got into we can finally have true change. The damage control will take time and effort from all people involved on either end of the situation. One major move I feel we can make is by giving honest history lessons that cover every part of our history in schools. I feel that American History and World History should be more emphasized on in our school systems and curriculum. If the students get the full education of our history and how we got to where we are, then moving on will become easier. We expect for children to lead us into a bigger and better future, but how can we expect that without the truth coming to light for our diverse culture. We cannot expect to make this country better without knowing their full history and the mistakes we have made in our past. Looking for another way to move forward, Essence asked Dr. Joy DeGruy on what we could do moving forward, her answer was, “…more research, support, and assistance are needed to produce vital healing…that exceeds the injury
I'm delightfully honoured to have received the nomination to be Kappa Epsilon's Historian. I feel that I'm much qualified for the position, and very excited for my duties if elected. My duties shall be to document the activities and achievements of the month and capture them in writing and in photograph, and to compile a scrapbook and a PowerPoint presentation for the end of the year. Based on my artistic background and my adequate proficiency with computers, it is to my belief that I would be an exceptional choice for the position. I ensure that I will put all my abilities to work and excel in all of my duties, and to truly illustrate what Kappa Epsilon represents.
Passion is fickle There is a great social pressure to find your “passion” or “purpose” ,like it’s something that is assigned to you at birth, and then to pursue this passion beyond all else. This is a lie we tell the children to keep them happy. In a galaxy far far away Luke Skywalker was born with the passion and talent to defeat the Sith and bring balance to the Force. But we don’t live in that galaxy we live on Earth, and on Earth good does not always defeat evil, and no one is born into this world with a hidden purpose that needs to be found. People need to stop searching for their passions because it’s not necessary for success.
Though the past may bring "a revival and restoration of the misery"(Limerick 473), I believe it is necessary to know and study our past. Through this essay I shall explain how knowledge of the past helps improve the quality of future output, satisfy our human thirst for knowledge, and understand certain polices and regulations.
Pursuing a dual J.D./M.A. in History is the program best suited for my academic interests and career goals and is the ideal way to continue my education at the next level. In addition to my passion for the law, I possess an enthusiasm for historical research and have gained significant experience in the historical field as an undergraduate student. My first academic passion was for historical study, and as I developed my interest in the law as an undergraduate, the complementarity of these two fields became apparent to me, not only because of the importance of precedent in the American legal system, but also because one cannot fully understand the law and past court cases without proper historical context. Being that the study of the law
The problem with listening to external factors is that it will eventually just come down to you. You won’t succeed in your career if you don’t actually have the passion – you’ll soon find yourself unhappy again, whishing you could do something different. It’s not a bad idea to take note of what is happening in the world around you and to listen to people’s opinions but don’t allow them to be in the driving
1. The importance of the study of world history to me personally as an American is very significant because I hope to find a career where I will work with many diverse people and I not only want to know them, but I want to have an understanding of where they came from in order to associate with them better. Another reason is that an American can be from any culture from around the world. Americans aren’t any certain race or religion, so we have to understand our fellow citizens just as they need to understand us. I was in definite need of a course like this because before I started taking this class I had no idea of the simple concept of the different beliefs between Hinduism and Judaism. I had heard of the different religions vaguely in high school, but was never actually taught about them. I didn’t even know that Jews did not eat pig because they thought it was a descendant of the devil. If I weren’t to know that, somewhere down the road I might have offered one of my Jewish friends a ham sandwich and that would have been a very embarrassing situation.
Learning about history helps us learn about the humanities own reflection and what’s good or bad about it. This is just like a diary , people and by people I mean historians , just wrote what they saw and what seemed to cause a major change in society and we just happen to be reading it a couple of years later. I believe that historians actually wrote historical truth because it makes sense and it has been scientifically proven
When most people think about history they remember a boring class they took in school a long time ago, they recall memorizing important dates, taking map tests, and falling asleep while listening to a lecture. The truth is that history really is an important subject to be teaching students. History is more than just some lecture you receive in class, history lets us look back, see the good things and the bad things, it allows us to learn from our mistakes and prevent such mistakes from happening in the future. Things that happened in the past are still changing things that are happening today. History is needed for everyone, from government leaders down to individuals; everyone has learned one thing or another from history at some point in their life.
